Sutekh, God of Chaos, prepares to storm Magnetix

Reported by Andy Force / Submitted 20-05-08 13:25

In a scene where half the world and his wife seem to be DJs, it takes something extraordinary to keep your diary filled with bookings week in week out, as well as getting promoters to sit up and take notice. Sutekh appears to have done just that, having played alongside artists such as Astrix, Alien Project and Xerox & Illumination on line-ups for top parties including Antiworld, Transcience, Proactive and Pendragon, to name just a few.

To find out more about one of London's favourite psy trance DJs, ahead of his set at the next Magnetix, Andy Forse was dispatched with note pad and pen.

Hello again Sutekh, this is not the first time I've interviewed you, now I don't do interviews that often (almost never in fact), but I do like to work for parties that are musically cutting edge, and that only invite DJs that can keep up with the rapidly evolving sounds of underground dance music. Therefore I am delighted to welcome you to Magnetix on the 30th of May, for a feast of trance and psy trance.

Every DJ has an interesting story about where they started and how they got to where they are as it is a fascinating journey; how did it all start out for you?

Well, for me it all started out in the mid 90s I guess, listening to old Goa trance and discovering a love for dance music. I also grew up alongside friends and their relatives who were heavily involved in the Pendragon and Samsara parties, so a love of hard trance and techno took over and I remember enjoying some amazing parties at Tyssen Street and The Fridge back when that scene was rocking!!

Psy trance has been around a long while and has evolved from Goa with all-sorts of other influences along the way, Who were your influenced by and how did you find the psychedelic sound?

It was at school / college and the introduction to 'Albert Hofman' RIP, heheh that first got me really interested in the Goa sound. I remember the early Astral Projection, Green Nuns or Cosmosis groups were such a new exciting, futuristic alien sound to me, but I found I was really only listening to it at home. Mixing in clubs for me was the early European hard trance that had the power and the drive to get people dancing, which as a young partier was what I wanted on the dance floors. Then seeing and hearing early Talamasca, Dino Psaras and many others create this combination of sounds along with the advances in production equipment and techniques, produced the power and the intelligence that brought about psy trance as it is nowadays.

What artists make it into your record collection, and are there any new artists emerging that are impressing you?

Anything really, it depends on the party, the time of day / night and so on to what style I play. I'm kinda playing a lot of Alchemy Records stuff and Nano stuff in a lot of sets with superb acts like Headroom, E-Jekt, Burn In Noise usually getting a drop. I really like to play long sets, best for me would be around 10pm - 2 am where I can start with some nice minimal sounding progressive or even techno, building through progressive and up, up, up to full night time full-on. I've got a real addiction to the more full on darker stuff recently, and acts like Scorb and Digital Talk, have been really rocking my boat. As far as new artists go, Headroom is the one at the moment, I have some stuff of my own in the pipeline but it still needs a lot of work. I would also check out Compressor's new stuff for some really good powerful psy, as well as M-theory, Sinewave, Flipflop and many more for that morning groovy style.

Keep an eye on 24/7 Records new stuff, Alchemy, Nano, as well as UK labels Pointzero and new label Mutigen, there's gonna be some nice music this year coming.

And leading on from that question, what are your top tracks of this year so far?

Hmmm, I always get asked this and it’s such a hard question as they are always changing. I guess my top 10 at the mo would be, in no particular order:

1. The Vaabrater - Headroom
2. The Keeper - Digital Talk
3. Floppy Drive - Flip Flop
4. Transonic - Compressor
5. Stupid Science - Scorb
6. Red Tide - Hydraglyph
7. Frequency Salad - Headroom vs Burn In Noise
8. Red Glass - Mad Hatters
9. Blind Sensations - Panick
10. Do It - Rastaliens

Some old, Some very new, but killerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs!! Haha!

The psy trance scene is bursting with life and creativity at the moment, whereas other genres of hard music seems to have taken a tumble in popularity in recent years, what is it you think that has kept psy trance sustainable and increasing in popularity?

Brazilians!!! It’s a psy invasion !!!! Hahahah! I think the quality and the intelligence of the music and the way it can incorporate so many other forms of music helps as well. But psy trance for me is not just a music, its a worldwide community and brings many cultures together to create an awareness of our planet and our outlook on how we perceive reality.

What are your favourite parties to play and club at and what is it that makes them special?

I have many favourite parties, of course Antiworld will always have a place for me as my chance to perform alongside the worlds largest acts in some of the biggest venues and crowds, but my true love lies with the underground squat parties, with organisers like Psy Invasion and Digital Hive becoming part of my London family, you can see the real soul and passion that goes into these parties but not only from the promoters but the crowd, and to play to familiar faces / friends / family in a underground party for me is the best !!

What's your plan for the next few years, and are there any ambitions you'd like to share with us?

I'm desperately trying to get a few of my own tracks finished first, then really travel the world and see some of this amazing planet we live on. I'd love to play at some of those epic parties in Brazil soon, as well visiting Goa of course. But I’ll always stay true to my roots, and of course London town will be in my diary for many years to come I hope.

Other than DJing what do you do with your spare time?

Learning to produce still, but otherwise my passion is my beautiful girlfriend, my dogs, fishing and generally being a country bumpkin in the weekdays.

And some quick fire questions:

Favourite piece of equipment?

Rizla

Top tune of all time?

Blackbird - The Wurzels

Best set you've ever played?

Too many for different reasons

Favourite sub genre?

Minimal Badger Techno at the mo, plus a good ol bit of Metal !!

More: Having only recently recovered from our near sell out February party, God (or someone indeed!) has saw fit to grace the month of May with an extra weekend with which to host the third instalment of what is fast becoming the talk of the underground clubbing scene. In fact, if you missed it, or even if you were there and want to relive it all over again, you can!
Magnetix resident Ashley James’ closing set is now available from our website, www.magnetixuk.com. Following on from Kristian was never going to be easy, but we think he nailed it. But don’t take our word for it, you can listen for yourself!

Go to www.magnetixuk.com now, where you can download or stream the mix from the front page!

But enough talk of the past; let us talk of the future!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are very proud to announce that Magnetix is back at the legendary Club 414 on Friday 30th May, ready to rock your world one more time.

Our main guest for the evening is none other than Psy Trance legend in the making, Sutekh. He has residencies seemingly coming out of his ears (most notably Transcience, Logic and the behemoth that is Antiworld), and an equally impressive collection of production releases. Having rocked pretty much all of the largest dance floors London has to offer (Brixton Academy, Coronet, Turnmills, SeOne, Renaissance Rooms, The Colosseum) as well as bookings nationally and internationally, we are very proud to have Sutekh showcase his full on Psy Trance sound for the Magnetix and 414 faithful to experience. We guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Ehren Stowers is not only a Trance DJ, but also part of the team that brought you the fantastic Trance Generation which recently had Hidden rocking and packed to the rafters. With a solid production history behind him including releases on Mondo and Monster Tunes amongst others, a gig history including The Gallery, Heat, Innovate and Riot! as well as playing alongside some of the biggest DJs the world of trance has to offer, including Blank & Jones, Giuseppe Ottaviani, and Paul Oakenfold (yes, we are serious!). We think his achievements speak for themselves, so imagine how honoured we were when he agreed to play for us. This is one DJ really not to be missed!

On a slightly different note, Louk is our third guest of the evening. After being a resident at the now defunct Plymouth Dance Academy, he went on to start his own promo distribution website. He now deals with promo material for labels all across Europe, from the UKs No. 1 Hard Trance label Addiction Digital, to Dave Joys Swiss based Joyride imprint and Trance NRG of Italy, among many, many more. This has no doubt helped his already flourishing DJ career as he now plays regularly all over the UK, including the likes of The Sanctuary Festival, Resonate, Atmosphere and Bionic in Wales . Production wise young Louk has also been doing very well, with a healthy back catalogue of tunes out on labels Druck, Trance NRG, Club Quake and Thrust Groove, as well as a hectic upcoming release schedule. You can expect his trademark immersion of hard techy trance to utterly blow you away!

Our last but by no means least guest this evening will be birthday boy Timmy Whiz. One of the more colourful characters you will find on just about any dance floor (where he can usually be found at the front), Timmy has successfully translated his passion for the music over to the other side of the decks.
Part of the Puzzle Project crew and newly crowned resident/promoter at the newest 414 after party, reFre5h, Timmy has proved that he is just as good a DJ as he is a raver, and will be kick starting Magnetix with a 2 hour birthday set. We can’t wait almost as much as he can!

Of course, no Magnetix would be complete without its trio of residents:

Phil Lankester, quite possibly one of the busiest DJs in the scene, including residencies at Puzzle Project, Alumni and Just Groove, will be taking on a slightly earlier set than before, allowing him to showcase a more progressive Psy sound.

Ashley James, recently announced Recreation resident, has been busy working away in the studio of late, with the fantastic Futreform coming out on Technikal recordings, young Ashley just keeps going from strength to strength.

Finally this brings us to Dean Zone. Purveyor of all things European, Dean has been rolling in the gigs in of late, including upcoming performances at Hidden, Factory and even Ministry of Sound.

And for those of you who don’t want to go home come 06:00, the Magnetix afterparty will be running from 06:30 – very late, with DJs Mat Lock, 2shay, Kevster and Conrad Bruce, all for just £5.

Please note, we here at Magnetix are not content with just turning up, putting up set times, switching on the decks and playing some music. Oh no. It is our mission to give you, the clubber, a much more personal clubbing experience.
On the night we will be decking out Club 414 to the max.
Expect psychedelic décor, vinyl give aways, free mix cd’s for the first 50 people through the door, free glow sticks and bands, free tickets to other events and lots more.
Couple that with the best chill out room of any club in London, dedicated club Photographers, a roof terrace for the smokers and of course, the legendary 414 café (what other club in London can you get a Cheese Toasty from?) and you’d be mad to miss out!

We are also doing our best to support new talent and push new DJs. With a strictly any type of Trance music policy, we are always open to receiving demos. Just hand your demo in at the door when you arrive. All demos will be listened to by a member of the team and you will receive feedback.
