DreamCatching with Metaphase and Zeus

DreamCatcher: a symbol of unity among Native American nations, designed to guard against bad dreams, so that only the good ones filter through. Taking this analogy and applying it to a psychedelic trance party, you’d expect only the best music and production to be caught in the net and distilled down those feathers, bringing together a tribe of happy shiny ravers. This may sound like quite an ambition, but in fact Metaphase and Zeus — Fabry Motta and Peter Welgemoed — have been doing this for a couple of years now, with their promotion Roots celebrating its second birthday at the end of 2007. Their events are known for their top of the range full-on psy trance and progressive sounds, with the guys putting together rare and innovative line-ups to keep the increasingly competitive London psy scene coming back for more. This Saturday night they’ve put together one of the best international psy trance line-ups London has seen yet this year, so we figured it was time for an update from the dynamic duo…
Fabry and Peter first met at that musical shrine that inspired so many of our scene’s current DJs and promoters: Escape from Samsara at The Fridge. Fabry had come to London from his native Italy to study English with a friend, while Peter was a semi-pro footballer from South Africa who’d come to play in the UK. They both ended up falling for London’s thriving music scene and playing a very different kind of game.
Zeus aka Peter Well
Since those early days the guys have achieved a lot. Residents at psy trance institution Antiworld, they’ve been encouraged to do their own thing, starting their own successful label — PointZero Records — and running their own night, Roots. Peter’s successful 2006 ‘Radioactivity 2’ compilation brought together names like Xerox & Illumination, X-noiZe, Solar System, Dejavoo and M-Theory, while having already produced some great tracks, Fabry is aiming to have his artist album finished in 2008.
This Saturday’s DreamCatcher event at Jacks sees the guys put together one of their most diverse line-ups yet. Organised in conjunction with Israeli psy trance heavyweight label HOMmega Records, they’ve got X-noiZe and Xerox of Xerox of Illumination fame flying in especially for the party. South Africa’s Artifakt of Timecode Records is playing a rare London set, while Scandinavian psy is also represented, in the form of Midezen and Norup from Denmark’s Scientific Sequence. Local psy makes up the rest of the line-up, with Offworld’s Fordy, Mif from Atom and of course Zeus and Metaphase completing the main room.
Meanwhile in the second room there’s prog, chill-out and electro from G-Spot (Roots/Frolic), Maghina (Nomads/Domo), Sutekh (PointZero/Antiworld), Christian Sky (One-Tribe/Synergy) and Herbert Newbert (Wonky Disco/One-Tribe). Combine all this with awesome production, mind-bending visuals and psychedelic deco and Jacks is going to be going off with a bang. But without further ado, let’s let the main men themselves do the talking…
Metaphase aka Fabry Motta
You were last interviewed on HarderFaster on December 2006. What’s been happening since then in your worlds?
Fabry/Metaphase: I’ve been babysitting my daughter and making music. My daughter is an inspiration for me.
Peter/Zeus: Well, I’ve been spending a lot of time behind the computer promoting our events and also been spending more time making music with Fabry, which is going on quite well. It’s been a very exciting period.
How did you first get interested in music? Was it an epiphany or a gradual thing?
F/M: I first started playing the guitar then got into hard rock music and I used to play some commercial stuff before I came to London. It was a gradual thing but I was always into music. London was an inspiration and I started making my own music six years ago.
P/Z: For me it was more of a gradual thing, as I came to London mostly to play football and then got hooked into the music scene. I started DJing in 1999 and have been much in love with what I do since then.
Can you remember the first time you played out? When was it and what did you play?
F: Yeah at the 414, and I do remember! It was an Australian girl’s leaving party in 1999 and a wicked event.
P: For me it was at one club in Slovakia. I’d just moved to the country and was quite desperate to get noticed somewhere. Luckily for me they offered me the opportunity to play out and was great. It was very nerve-wracking in the beginning but I soon got over it and I’ve just had a blast since then.
What propelled you to come to London? What impact do you think moving here had on your music?
F: I came here with a friend to learn English then ended up staying on. It’s had a good impact on my music because there are so many different influences in London.
P: Like I mentioned before, I came to London mainly to play football as I was playing semi-pro in South Africa. Getting into the bigger leagues was extremely difficult and I’d since developed a new talent and love for underground music. Musically it’s going very well as there is so much you can achieve in a city like London.
What and who were your major influences growing up? And now?
F: Pink Floyd and Ozzy Osbourne — Ozzy is my hero! Marty Freedman — you know Megadeath? He’s their guitarist. Now, maybe The Prodigy, Moby and Silicon Sound.
P: I grew up with the likes of Nirvana, Sepultura, Megadeath, Pink Floyd, etc etc. Currently I’m more involved with the dance scene but still go to loads of concerts like TOOL, which are absolutely amazing. I love all styles of music, so I’m not really stuck with one specific genre.
How would you describe your sound? How has it changed and progressed over the years?
F: Funky progressive. It’s become a much more electronic style.
P: I started with hard trance years ago but it has since moved to full-on psychedelic trance with deep and groovy bass-lines.
When did you first get interested in producing electronic music? Are you self-taught or did you study?
F: I studied — I have a diploma in sound engineering and music production.
P: I’ve just recently started producing and have done a certificate coarse in sound engineering but I’m currently learning a lot from Fabry.
Fabry, you were one of the original Antiworld residents and both play a big part in their events — in fact you’re playing back to back on the main stage at Psychedelic Academy on Sunday 4 May. How did you both first get involved with Antiworld?
F: I was playing at George IV and Enrico came up to me and asked me to be his resident. I played at my first Antiworld party in September 2001 to 4000 people. I’ll always be thankful to Enrico from Antiworld for giving me this opportunity.
P: We were doing a Roots party in November 2001 and I then got introduced to Enrico through Fabry. Since then I’ve had some great opportunities to play at some amazing events.
What have been the highlights of your career?
F: Just to release with PointZero, our label. Playing some great parties. The Full Moon Party in Germany was quite good and China in 2001. I’ve sold a track to Christopher Lawrence on his Gatecrasher Compilation — ‘Live In Moscow’. That has been the highlight of my production career. The name I was using was Project FM.
P: Setting up Roots Productions and PointZero Records with Fabry. Both have brought us numerous opportunities within the scene. Also, releasing our first two compilations has been a very big highlight and then playing at some of the European festivals such as 070707 on the main stage, Hilltop (Slovakia), Chvatimech (Slovakia) and the Middle Earth Festival in Denmark.
What software and hardware do you like to use in the studio?
F: Virus Nortlead 3, Makie 824, a Mac computer, Logic 8 and plenty of plug ins!
P: Same as Fabry but just without the Virus Nortlead.
What’s been your favourite gig to date?
F: Psychedelic Academy at Brixton Academy — but I don’t remember which one!
P: I have too many gigs to mention but the ones that are stuck in my head most have to be Infecting the UK at the Coronet and Roots. At Roots it’s always great to play, as there’s always an amazing energy and vibe.
If you could put on a Roots party anywhere in the world, where would it be?
F: It would be in Brazil on the beach with Headroom and Ozzy Osbourne playing.
P: I would love to take Roots to many places, but the main ones would definitely on a beach in Brazil or South Africa.
What plans do you have for the next year? And beyond?
F: I’m releasing my album this year and hope for the best.
P: Releasing more compilations with the label and also Fabry’s album. Roots have a few dates already planned out, which will be hosting some amazing artists… I’ll also be concentrating a lot on my music production.
After so many years in the industry, what advise do you have for aspiring club promoters, DJs and music producers reading this?
F: The harder you work, the more likely you are to succeed!
P: For sure, just like Fabry said but also to do it with passion.
Who are your favourite producers at the moment?
F: Astrix I would have to say because he’s very good and the Commercial Hippies.
P: Headroom, G.M.S. and Blanka to name a few.
What are your favourite artists and/or tracks to get the party started at the moment?
F: Anything by Matt Hutters, Marcello Vor and Wrecked Machines.

Who are your tips for the top in 2008?
F: El Nino, an Israeli artist. This guy has good potential. Voiceover, who’s also from Israel. And of course Peter.
P: Hehe, thanks…. I believe Fabry’s album is going to do very well, so it’s one to look out for. And the above-mentioned guys I have to agree with cos they’re very talented. Be sure to catch them at one of our Roots events sometime soon.
The psy trance scene has got more and more commercial over the years and now John 00 Fleming’s Psy Trance Euphoria is in the charts. After being around the scene for so many years what do think about all this? Where would you like to see it go?
F: Well as I said before, I’ve sold a track to Christopher Lawrence’s Live In Moscow compilation for Gatecrasher, so it’s all good for me!
What’s happening for PointZero Records in the next couple of months?
F: Well we’ve got ‘Radioactivity Meltdown’ coming soon. It’s going to be good! We’ve already got tracks from the Commercial Hippies and TimeLock.
P: ‘Radioactivity Meltdown’ will be the final part of the Radioactivity trilogy and we’re very much looking forward to this release. Then there’s Fabry’s album, which is also to be released soon, followed by some more compilations.
Next Saturday you’re putting on DreamCatcher at Jacks… it’s in collaboration with Antiworld and HOmmega. How did this all come about? Can you tell us a bit about the line-up?
Fabry: We just decided that we wanted to have some HOMmega artists and change the line-ups around.
Zeus: Yeah, opportunities came about and we’ve decided to do a kick-ass event at Jacks. We’ve got a very nice line-up, X-Noize and Xerox are surely going to rock the floor and also we’ve got some other artists coming in from Denmark and South Africa…. Definitely an event not to be missed!
What other Roots events do you have lined up?
Fabry: In April we have a PointZero and Nutek Records party with Painkiller.
Zeus: Yes, in April we’re also introducing Painkiller and Bliss’ new live act, A-Team. It’s a new act by these two great producers with lots of t-shirt and CD give-aways. Also we have some more events planned for the future but you’ll have to check out our website for more info.
