Sly One & Jurrane - Look into the Futurity

Sly One & Jurrane are one of the fastest-emerging talents in trance. Their trademark high-octane, energetic DJ sets and powerful, uplifting productions have emerged from the secretive London underground club scene and taken the world by storm, with their tracks and remixes seeing sustained support from all the biggest names in the trance world. Let's catch up with them ahead to the Futurity gig, 1st of October 2011 at The White House
Hi guys, tell us about your year so far, what have been the highlights?
2011’s been a real production year for us with four new Sly One vs Jurrane originals either released or due to come out on Discover, Armada and Perfecto. We’re thrilled with the variety of sounds showcased across the tracks and you can definitely expect something different from the forthcoming Perfecto release! On the DJ side of things, probably the highlight is signing a deal to become resident DJs for Forward, a superb promotion in Leeds who are making real waves in the trance scene at the moment.
Tell me about how you came about to collaborate with each other and what it’s like working together?
J: We’ve known each other for years and share a similar background in coming through the ranks – and becoming resident DJs – at London’s Planet Angel parties. As we had similar musical tastes, we decided to write the track that became ‘Time Bomb’ in 2006, and it was signed to Discover soon after. We’ve been making music together ever since.
As for working together, it’s a great laugh. We have the odd disagreement but they’re few and far between. Our studio sessions are probably best described as a jamming session; we fire up a bunch of loops on Ableton and just take it from there.
G: We complement each other well. I veer towards the nutty professor at times and while it has its advantages in the form of crazy noises and ideas, I can end up disappearing up my arse if someone isn’t reining me in! Conversely, I add a bit of a perfectionist element to Jim’s broad-brush ideas.
How would you sum up your sound?
J: Pumping party trance that’s all about putting smiles on faces on the dance floor.
G: We want to have fun and we want everyone in the room to have fun. Too many people take music - especially electronic music - too seriously. We want to see craziness! The music we make reflects that.
Who have been your biggest influences to date?
J: I’ve always admired Ian Betts’ sound as his productions encapsulate all that’s good in pumping, uplifting trance. Production-wise, we’ve learnt a lot from the likes of Activa, Daniel Kandi and Giuseppe Ottaviani. The stuff that comes out of their studios is always top-notch.
G: I have so much trouble with these questions! Thanks Jim for stepping in - there are too many names to name and I always feel guilty not mentioning people!
How would you sum up the trance scene in the UK at the moment?
J: It can be challenging because there are fewer venues and parties around at the moment, and those that remain tend to be dominated by the same big names. That said, there seem to be more and more smaller events springing up and they’re incredibly important to the future of the scene.
What do you enjoy more, producing an epic track or DJing to a packed crowd at a club or festival?
G: For sheer energy and excitement, you really can’t beat those massive, up-for-it gigs when the ideas are flowing fast, the tunes you pick are just right atjust the right time, everything just works, the crowd are right in there with you, the lights are flashing fast and the bass is pounding. It’s like life fuel. I couldn’t do it every single night though - a lot of the time, being closeted up in the studio with a nice big mug of tea, the wind and rain outside, the cat asleep on the sofa and the same bassline looping round and round is pure heaven.
J: They’re fulfilling in different ways. Nothing beats playing to a big crowd who’re totally up-for-it because you get to directly see the enjoyment they’re getting from your music. On the other hand, the much longer-term process of finishing a track that you’re completely happy with brings a different sense of satisfaction, especially when you have the faith it’s going to rock dance floors all over the world.
Tell us about your new compilation, Global Trance UK.
J: Chris Hampshire and John Askew approached us around the middle of last year, telling us about their really cool concept of a trance compilation series featuring talent specific to particular regions of the world. We jumped at the chance, especially as it involved taking an A&R approach to signing a lot of exclusive unsigned music.
G: That was the killer!
J: Yeah, the brief was quite exact: everything on the album had to be from producers in the UK, and unsigned and exclusive. It was very exciting because it was pretty much unique as an album concept and gave us the chance to really make the project our own. Chris and John were clear from the outset; there also had to be plenty of unreleased Sly One vs Jurrane tracks on the album (be it new singles, remixes or reworks), and fresh new music from new and established names to represent the very best of the UK trance scene. This was very definitely not a project where we'd just be licensing a dozen of the biggest tunes out there at the moment - it was something quite different.
G: We’ve had quite a few emails from people who’ve spent 80 minutes lost in it and come out the other side saying “wow, that was incredible”. That’s so gratifying to hear, especially for a CD with very little in the way of big names. We spent so much time on it and we’re pleased that it’ll give so many people pleasure for years to come.
J: The result of all our efforts is available to buy on the Recoverworld website and we’re thrilled with how it’s turned out. We hope you like it too!
What can we expect from your set at Futurity?
J: You’ll be hearing several exclusive new Sly One vs Jurrane original tracks and bootlegs, plus some of the freshest music that’s been floating our collective boats recently. I’m sure we’ll squeeze in a few classics too. Just make sure the bar’s stocked with black sambuca!
G: Somebody shut him up. I barely made it back to my hotel room last time the night went that way! Yeah, expect mayhem.
Can you tell us what you have planned for the future, any new productions in the pipeline?
J: We’re pretty busy. We’ve a collaboration with Irish stars Walsh & MacAuley due to come out on Armin van Buuren’s Armada label, a brand new single under our new Protest Movement alias exclusive to a forthcoming compilation on Perfecto and we’re currently working with a very exciting vocalist on a big-room vocal trancer. Stay tuned also for a very special Sly One vs Jurrane remix of one of the biggest Discover tracks of the last few years – you won’t want to miss this one!
G: We’re really concentrating on originals at the moment and only taking remix work if special opportunities come along. It’s given us quite a bit of focus, hence all the new music!
Finally, what has been the standout DJing experience in your careers to date as Sly One vs Jurrane?
J: For me, it’s probably a big event called Eastern Connection in Poland a couple of years ago. To headline a huge open-air party in a football stadium in the middle of nowhere was a real experience. We’d love to go back to Eastern Europe sometime as the scene there is really vibrant.

Norfolk-born Dan Stone started rocking the clubs of East Anglia 13 years ago but only began producing his own music in 2005 securing his first signing ‘Made In Bahrain’ with trance super label, Anjunabeats, in 2006.
His uplifting, euphoric sound has attracted support from huge shows such as Above & Beyond’s Trance Around The World and Armin Van Buuren’s A State Of Trance gaining him an ever-growing fanbase across the world.
He has taken his style of big room, floor filling trance to clubs and club nights up and down the UK including Ministry Of Sound, Gatecrasher, Passion and Off The Rails and this year will be taking his sound overseas for the first time to up and coming trance capital, Poland.
He has had consistent support and releases on Anjunabeats and had his tracks remixed by popular producers such as Nitrous Oxide and Signum as well as producing remixes of his own for labels such as Armada, Enhanced, Alter Ego and many more, including his first remix for Anjunabeats of Arty’s ‘Rush’, released this year. His more recent releases ‘Mumbai’, ‘Fahrenheit’ and ‘Crafted’ and features on compilations Anjunabeats Volumes 7 and 8 and Worldwide 02 have catapulted Dan into the trance limelight, with appearances in the Top 10s of all the major trance download stores.

The Sly One vs Jurrane partnership is exclusively signed to UK trance giant Discover Records for original tracks, and has released over a dozen records and remixes on the Recoverworld series of labels. The duo’s massive 2010 smash Everything To Me on Discover swept the board with support from nearly every major trance DJ worldwide and licensing on countless compilations. As lead artists on the Discover Records roster, Sly One vs Jurrane were given the great honour of compiling and mixing the label’s 2010 landmark ‘Discover: The Next Chapter’ compilation and are also currently compiling the second installment in Discover’s Global Trance series, due in January 2011, featuring 100% new music from UK producers.
MARK LANDRAGIN
Mark Landragin is someone who has certainly been making great strides over the past couple of years. The 25 year old has a CV that includes main room appearances at London super clubs Ministry Of Sound and Pacha as well as appearing alongside world renowned DJs such as Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Above & Beyond, Judge Jules, Sander Van Doorn and X-Press 2.
Headlining The Wasaga Beach Music Festival in Canada saw Mark gain new heights as well as taking over from Paul Van Dyk at the Germans London Warehouse Party.
Mark has also been busy in the studio and his debut track titled 'In Between Two', has now been released on Prehab Recordings.

Italian London based Dj Erc is always been interested in electronic dance music since early days.
Growing up in Italy gave him a big exposure in the 90' to the popular italo-disco.
But real passion to the music found him after listening "For an angel" by Paul Van Dyk.
In 2006 pick up a second hand pair of Gemine Cdjs and start to learn the magic of dj skills.
From then he has been playing around all the main venue and trance party around London like Ministry of Sound, SE ONE, Cable, Matter, 414, Hidden
His unique blend of hands-in-air, bouncy , soulful trance with dreamy breakdowns distinguishes his unique sound
As promoter Dj Erc aka Ercole Marco Lugari also collaborate in various successfully projects like Trance Unite,Trance Generation and Odyssey.
