Radio One Taken Over By Tramps?

Reported by Steve Anderson / Submitted 12-07-07 19:52

If I was to say to you “The King Of Clubs”, you may be forgiven for initially thinking that I was referring to a pack of cards. However when it comes to Superclubs across Europe, I could only be talking about one place – and that’s the mighty club Tramps in Tenerife.

There was a time when the summer flight schedule of DJ’s such as Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell, Dave Pearce, or the Gatecrasher and Hed Kandi Residents would only have regular weekly entries to the likes of Ibiza. But for clubbers not heading to the White Isle for their fix of summer madness or for those looking for a second fix, these major players can be found playing new residencies throughout the season at the fantastic 2000-capacity Tramps nightclub in Tenerife.

From early beginnings as a disco bar in Playa De Las Americas on the south of the island, this club gained huge popularity by the mid nineties and as a result were forced to develop the venue by the turn of the millennium in terms of both size and stature. Located in the Starco area of the resort, and around a minutes walk from the well known Veronicas strip, Tramps stands out from a distance as the premier venue on the island by some margin. Now a superclub in every sense of the word, the club boasts three separate rooms and opens from around 9pm right through til after 6am the following morning.

As well as the aforementioned DJ’s, Tramps can already boast a long list of the worlds finest DJ’s gracing the tables there such as Fergie, JOOF, Anne Savage, Lisa Lashes, Danny Rampling, Tall Paul, and even Jeremy Healy as early as the year 2000. Not content with stopping there, the biggest brands out there such as Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Hed Kandi, Slinky and Ministry Of Sound have all gotten in on the action in recent times. But now there’s one more. Most of you will remember last years “Six Weeks Of Summer” on BBC Radio One, where six of the best clubbing hot spots across Europe were selected by Radio One for live broadcasts on air. This year Six Weeks is back and the second instalment of 2007 hits Tramps for two days of broadcasts direct from the club and live on air to the world via FM, Sirius, Digital and Online radio.

Saturday 21st will see the club take to the airwaves from 4pm, for a three hour warmup party which will include interaction from the crowd and club staff. Straight afterwards from 7-9pm Judge Jules’ weekly show will go out live from the club, amid an electric atmosphere I suspect. The third instalment of the broadcast then comes on Sunday 22nd between 7-9pm again, when Dave Pearce’s show is also live on air from the club. Along with these live broadcast slots, there will also be peak time sets from Jules and Dave and appearances from Trevor Nelson and Hed Kandi over the course of the weekend. All in all a fantastic weekend of clubbing at one of the finest venues I have been in. If you fancy taking in all the fun of the event, stay tuned to Radio 1 this coming week as some competitions will be running to enable some of you to attend the whole thing for free but if you can't wait secure your place over there by booking your flights now!

On a personal note, Tramps staff have always been one of the aspects that really make this club stand out from the rest for me, in that the right people are in there running the show. This is demonstrated no better than by General Manager Lee Gibson, one of the new breed of club managers whose finger is set firmly on the pulse and works tirelessly to push things forward. With a team of DJ’s in place that deliver exactly what the crowd want on every occasion, you can expect to hear the best in upfront House and Trance from DJ’s Tiny and Christian in the main arena from opening time around 11pm. The “20 Degrees” terrace out front opens first each night where DJs Marc Jepson and Grant Collins warm things up, and then progress the music perfectly throughout the evening. Then there's the newest addition to Tramps known as the Blue Room. In here you'll find an alternative to the main arena musically, and again is an area of the club that has again been refurbished and extended for 2007 with larger dancefloors, added bars and new sound and light.

The team doesn’t stop there either. A dedicated PR team along with professional podium dancers ensure that the atmosphere in the club hits fever pitch by the early hours each night. Also on hand to capture the crucial moments throughout every event is Tramps own photographer Ricardo, whose work can be found on this very page, tasty I'm sure you'll agree! The other refreshing thing you could get used to seeing at Tramps is the club owners circulating the venue and enjoying things every bit as much as the clubbers are.

I played Tramps as a guest twice last year and had two of the finest nights in my DJ career so far, which spans back almost 15 years in clubs from Scotland to Miami. Naturally I was more than pleased to be included again in this years guest roster and I even passed up on the White Isle this year to do so. If you haven’t checked out this club before, I suggest you do it soon. Tenerife may not yet have the standing or reputation in clubland that Ibiza does at present, but things are changing very quickly indeed. If you can’t make it over this summer, then make sure you are tuned to Radio 1 the weekend of 21st/22nd July – because something tells me it will be pretty special.

Weird - there is a "very exclusive" club called Tramps in London which is the antithesis of this - think very very rich men and desperate ladies in short skirts combined with a strict dress code and entry system Yuck

Excellent article Steve! Tramps is certainly the place worth booking your holiday to Tenerife for! Great photos too Wink
