The Justin Bourne supremacy: the Insekt @ Antiworld 07.07.07 interview Reported by Club_Insekt / Submitted 16-06-07 13:16 Everyone who knows and loves their hard house rates Justin Bourne as one of their favourite DJs. Even those clubbers who love the music but don’t know any of the names instantly recognise Justin’s classic hoover anthem ‘Drop the Dime’ (with Lee Jeffrey) from the heyday of the scene, back in 2000. Justin grew to prominence through taking centre stage at legendary nights such as Frantic and has since been a regular at I Love VC and an Insekt resident. In the studio, he has worked closely with Mik Cree (that’s Dynamic Intervention to you), and has had releases on Kaktai, Vicious Circle and his own Short Circuit label. He has long been established in the pantheon of gods of the harder end of hard house. It’s only to be expected, therefore, to find Justin among the headliners at the heavyweight Insekt stage at the massive Antiworld 070707 festival. Just before he jetted off on an Australian tour, we sent Nutter to ask him how excited he is to be playing at the biggest outdoor underground event of the Summer…. Justin, you have quite a long ongoing association with the club night Insekt. Can you say a bit about how and why you got involved with Insekt? I knew the lads that ran Insekt at the beginning — Marc, James and George E — from seeing them out at clubs, and playing for George and Marc at their night at the Purple Turtle. Then when they started up Insekt they asked me to be a resident, which I was chuffed to bits with, as those guys know their music and I thought I’d have pretty much free reign to play whatever I wanted. I play my hardest sets at Insekt. It’s one of those nights where you can just go off the rails if the mood takes you. Yeah, that’s exactly what we like! To date Insekt has only been associated with indoor clubbing events, so being involved in the Antiworld outdoor festival is an exciting new departure. How do you feel about playing festivals? I absolutely love playing festivals. It’s unfortunate that they don’t always have a lot of hard house DJs on their line-ups though, so I haven’t played as many festivals as I’d like to. I’ve got some good festival style tracks to play so I really can’t wait! Is there anyone else you’re hoping to catch playing out at the Insekt stage and at the Antiworld festival? On the Insekt stage, I’d like to check out Weirdo Live as I’ve never experienced his live show before. Within the whole festival I’d like to see Valentino Kanzyani, Adam Beyer, Eskimo, Marco Bailey, Felix Da Housecat and John ‘OO’ Fleming for old times’ sake. I used to hear John loads when I was younger playing on the south coast, but I haven’t heard him for years, so that’ll be top of my list. Tell us about your DJ highlights over the last six months — I gather you’ve been touring abroad a bit over the last year. I’ve been to Canada and Holland and I’m also just jetting off to Australia and New Zealand again next week for a few gigs. I’ve been playing loads in Ireland too, as well as my more regular gigs like Vicious Circle, SNAT, Storm, Goodgreef, Twist and others like Audio Deprivation, Wired and Summit. This year has been really great for me so far and I’ve got some wicked sets coming up, including at Insekt. So what are clubbing crowds like in the different countries you’ve been to? Are they up for the harder sounds? Are they more appreciative, madder, cooler…? Do they know their music? I’ve never played in a country that hasn’t been up for it. The guys in Oz and NZ really seem to know their music, which is great. It’s nice when tracks are recognised and I’ve never been one to play loads of classics. I prefer to play more upfront stuff with the odd classic in there. I love Japan. It’s such an experience to play there. I’ve been there four times now. And China was a real eye opener too, but a very cool place to play. Canada was great, again very receptive and somewhere I’d like to go again soon and I’d like to get back to Holland, I had a blast over there. The last couple of times I’ve seen you play out have both been back-to-backs and each of these produced extremely strong positive reactions from hard house fans. First there was your b2b with Paul Glazby at the Insekt second birthday at the Fridge in October 2006 (fan reactions: drooling, wanking), then more recently I saw your b2b with Karim at SNAT in May (fan reactions: pants wetting). I’m fascinated by how this works (the b2bs, I mean, not the pants wetting etc.) Does any planning and prior co-ordination go on between you and the other DJ in these b2bs? Or do you make it up as you go along? And is it harder work or more fun than playing alone? Haha, no planning goes into these whatsoever. We all have a good understanding of what the other one plays so it’s basically just turn up at the club and say, ‘alright mate’ ‘how’s it going?’ and then do your stuff. It’s totally off the cuff. B2bs are good fun now and then but I must admit I’m not a great fan and I don’t like the way loads of nights seem to cram a lot of these on the line ups these days. It takes a lot of your individuality away and most DJs will say they prefer to play their own sets. Saying that I’ve had some great b2b sets in the past. Who else might you like to do a b2b with? Have you ever done a b2b with your early influence, Pete Wardman? I’ve already done most of the b2b sets that I’ve ever wished to do. I’ve played three b2b sets with Pete in the past, which have been wicked. I’ve also done loads of b2bs with Paul Glazby and others include Ian M, Karim, Superfast Oz, Dynamic Intervention (Mik Cree) Marc Johnson, Ed Real and Ben Stevens. The only other DJs that spring to mind are Andy Farley, Ilogik and Dom Sweeten. They’re the only ones that I’d like to but never have. I’ve recently played a b2b with Karim and that was top of my list, so I’m pleased to have done that one. Yeah, that was brilliant (I had to wash my pants straight afterwards)… Moving swiftly on, what tracks are on your turntables and CDJs at the moment? What are your current favourite fresh new tracks that you are playing out? Excluding my own new ones: Richard Toomz — ‘Chorizo’ Farley & Trauma — ‘Meet Fu Yung’ Killer Hurts — ‘Get Up’ Base Graffiti — ‘Dom De Vit’ The Mizniss and Louis Fernio — ‘Bitch Invader’ The Captain & Disturbed — ‘Something Heavier’ Base Graffiti — ‘Loose Chemical’ E-Trax — ‘Let’s Rock’ (Maynard & Farrell Remix) Captain Tinrib & Dave Owens — ‘Fishcake’ There are loads of great tracks about at the moment I could list them all day, lol. All good! OK, so what are your own self-penned favourite tracks of all time? (People often cite the obvious ones such as ‘Get Back’ and ‘Drop the Dime’.) My favourites are ‘Time is Up’ — the Dance Flaw remix, the Great Responsibility’ remix and the Get Back remix. I’ve been involved in over ninety tracks now so these are a select few. My new one — ‘Catapult’ — will definitely be a future favourite too. Thanks… And which of your own recent productions are you most excited about? As I mentioned, my personal favourite of the last few tracks that I’ve done is ‘Catapult’ with Dynamic Intervention. I’m also really into ‘Super Powerz’ and ‘Musikism’, both co-written with Dom Sweeten. I’ve got at least seven new tracks to be released over the coming months: ‘Tin Can Wally’ (Vacuum Packed remix), a track for the V-Series with Nik Denton for Toolbox and a Vicious Circle release. I look forward to hearing these! You are a hard house DJ but do you find any influences from other genres when you produce your music? Yes, most of the influences actually come from other genres, house and techno being the most prominent sounds for this. Also psy-trance, especially for the cool edits and arrangements. Some of those tracks are totally off the wall. Interesting… Ok, if you were a clubber but not a DJ, which club nights would you go to? VCR, Insekt, Storm, SNAT, Party Proactive and other house and techno nights. I haven’t been out for years when I’m not DJing though. If I get a weekend off I usually try and do family stuff or chill out, as I’m in clubs most weekends anyway. It would be nice to let my hair down so to speak at some point though, and go out as a clubber. Finally, on a more serious note, have you seen ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and what did you think of it? (Perhaps you can explain the plot to me — I lost it years ago… Lol, yes I have. Both movies are wicked, but it’s a shame his name is Jason and not Justin, much better in my opinion, haha.
