Double Trouble are also known as Hornsby and Preacher, two hard dance-loving brothers who have been dj’ing together for the year and a half. Preacher’s career stretched back a fair while — he first played out at the tender age of 15 for Ghost at Happy Jack’s (back in the day!) and within a few years found himself playing regularly in the main room at Camden Palace for some of the venues biggest events. Parenthood put him out of action for a while, giving his younger brother the chance to catch up — but now he’s back alongside his sibling with a brand new party at Hidden.
Juiced is the name, 29th September is the date, and Greg Brookman headlines with Double Trouble and other regulars from the party’s previous incarnation, Music Factory, in tow. We got them to fill us in on where they’ve come from, what they do, what pushes their buttons.
Who introduced who to dance music? Did one of you learn from the other or did you discover it together?
Preacher: Mainly my dad and his friends having house parties. I felt the music from an early age — my biggest influence back then was DJ Steve Level.
Hornsby: I had other interests when we were younger, although I always enjoyed the music. I really started to get involved when Preacher’s first baby was born. The massive still needed entertaining!
What was behind the decision to start DJing together?
Preacher: We played at several house parties together, just for kicks really and enjoyed bouncing off each other.
Hornsby: We really hit it off playing back to back at private parties and decided to take that to the scene, always enjoyed entertaining the crowds together.
Aren’t you ever worried about sibling rivalry getting in the way?
Preacher: No! Although we both have different ideas they seem to blend well when we play together.
Hornsby: Not really, we both have different styles in our boxes. It gives us the opportunity to put tunes together that perhaps we wouldn’t play on our own.
Preacher, you have been playing out in London’s hard dance scene since you debuted at Ghost (at Happy Jack’s) when you were 15 years old. Did it not feel quite daunting playing in proper nightclubs at such a young age?
Preacher: Yes very, I remember them having to get me a crate to stand on. (I’ve grown a bit since then) although actually getting in to the club was harder than playing!
Hornsby: It was great to see Dan play at such a young age. The crowd were really behind him.

You also dabbled in producing Preacher — is this something you will be getting involved with again? How come you stopped?
Preacher: I enjoyed making music, putting my own thoughts into the tunes. It’s great to buy other people’s beats, but there is nothing quite like expressing yourself through your own sound. I stopped for a while as having two young boys can be demanding, however we have big plans to get back into the studio very soon — watch this space.
What do you guys play these days and how does it differ from what you used to play?
Preacher: I think we combine the classics with the new really well. Still got the old ones in the front of the box.
Hornsby: I try to bring the newer styles into our sets, between us we have a good blend. Playing all the new stuff is great, with Preacher dropping his vocal tunes in to keep the crowd going.
Which djs and club events do you really enjoy in 2006?
Preacher: I really like Paul van Dyk — I do love a bit of trance! Tasty and Frantic have to be the top events for ‘06.
Hornsby: Phil Reynolds is up there for me, along side Nick Rowland. Again Tasty and Frantic are hands down the best around this year and hopefully the next few . . .
You were playing for the likes of Sunnyside Up, Mind Over Matter, and Sundissential South when they were all in existence. Have you been sad to see clubs like these run their course, or do you not get too nostalgic about such things?
Preacher: It’s always sad to see events disappear. These parties are what got me going really, although we must make way different and better things.
Hornsby: These events were great back in the day. Although I never played for them, you could not beat it for quality and atmosphere — something that we are trying to keep going with our parties.

Do you feel that the hard dance scene is smaller these days? And if so, do you think that it is any worse off for it?
Preacher: There’s definitely much smaller crowds and promotions. It seems that there are lots of smaller intimate parties going on these days. I think a whole generation has missed out on the hard dance scene, which has not helped.
Hornsby: It’s much smaller these days. It’s a shame to see big capacity venues half full, where did everyone go . . . ?
You recently played for Billy “Daniel” Bunter at Tasty and Love Muzik — someone who has been around since hard dance was born, but is still out there pushing new talent. Did you catch any good new talent at these events?
Preacher: I’m loving Andy McCall. He’s a great new talent for me.
Hornsby: Brett Wood is smashing it up at the moment also on the female side. Clare McClaren, big up the girly djs! We need more of you.
And following on from that question — do you feel that the future of hard dance is safe?
Preacher: It’s as safe as the crowds want it to be. However with people like Billy “Daniel” Bunter on the case surely we can keep things going and remind people of what they are missing.
Hornsby: I agree, you can only go on as long as the people want it. It’s making sure they have the choice that counts, combining different styles of dance music to give people a taste of what styles are out there.
You are playing together at Juiced at Hidden this Friday, a follow on from the Music Factory parties at Factory. What’s the idea behind Juiced?
Preacher: The name came from a Playstation game! We wanted something that sounded catchy. It’s all about the juicy beats!
Why should we come there and not anywhere else this Friday? Bring on the blag!
