Inspiration Launch Party at Deep Blue

There seems to be a lot of restructuring going on in clubland at the moment. Openings, closings, launches and retirements. The ebb and flow of life. With the thoughts of this in my mind along with the comments in various threads lately, I made my way down to the first of a number of launch parties this month, this time in the shape of Inspiration at Deep Blue.
Friday is always a difficult day for a launch. As it’s the end of the week, people it seems want to chill out rather than have it large, so I was looking forward to seeing what was billed as a proper chill out room. Somewhere to get away from the maddening crowds, to sit down and chat, maybe play a few games of giant connect four. Well, apologies to Jurrane from Boundless, who was playing the warm up in the main room but Sezer The Geezer’s eviction held me enthralled and I didn’t get down to the club until well into his set, almost the end in fact. I did get to catch some of his great uplifting sounds, which as always impressed me but it probably didn’t help that I spent the first half hour or so flitting from person to person saying hi.

What also impressed me straight away was the presence of a sound engineer, something that’s sorely missing in many of London’s club. Either that or there’s plenty of guys getting paid to sit on their arse while people’s ears bleed. I digress though.
Right after Jurrane’s set came Stacy Kitson (better known as Stace) and Anthony Dean of Knowwhere. I’ll constantly harp on about wanting to hear some innovation within music on the scene and here was something that genuinely impressed me. Stace got up on a stage in front of Anthony Dean and proceeded to sing live over the playing track. Impressed is nowhere near a strong enough word to describe how cool I thought it was, I even wondered why I’d been so stupid as not to have seen this double act before. Stace provided a real focal point for the smallish crowd dancing around her. I hope very much these two go far. But there was only one song; it seems there were some problems with the sound, which was a shame as I really wanted to hear more. The set progressed though to ‘Ayla’ and despite the sparseness of patrons, those assembled were still having it, as was I. It was turning into a right old classics set with ‘The Earthshaker’, my all time favourite tune — ‘Don’t Be Afraid’ by Moonman, then ‘Heaven’s Cry’.
Stace
From about 1.15 the music turned that slight bit harder as Mr Dean prepared the crowd for Kris Noble, one of the Inspiration residents. Kris kicked off his set with Generator and things seemed like they were hotting up as he continued his set with some bouncy, uplifting hard trance, with tracks like ‘Love Resurrection’. The collected crowd, unfortunately thinning as the night went on, seemed pretty happy though with the music, but I felt it was time to explore the chill out room.
Separated from the main room with some sound curtains, the step up into the room revealed more sofas covered with people while the DJs toward the back of the room were playing breaks with tracks like Drumattic Twins — ‘Feelin’ Kinda Strange’ getting me all funky. What I did notice in the room was the lack of games to play and the fact that though the music was very cool, it wasn’t particularly chilled. I spoke to Quantum Luke, resident and co-promoter, about the problems as I saw them. He told me about delivery problems with the games that led to their absence and sound problems on the night leading to sound bleed between the rooms. This was a shame, as I was really looking forward to seeing a cool chill out room in action. Spaces to get away from the music to chat and chill are conspicuous in their absence in London clubs and can turn an average night into a great night in my opinion even if it’s just so you can have five minutes away from the action.
The crowd
Back in the main room after shaking my arse and Kris was playing ‘Shine’ by The Space Brothers. I felt it was time to sit down. The bar area, like most of the club itself, was very well lit. From our vantage point on a sofa next to a rather large speaker (thank god for ear plugs) we could see everything. The people at the bar, the couple in front of us, the ubiquitous laughing gas stall, the face painter (a nice touch); in some ways it was a bit like being at a house party rather than a club, in some other ways I just felt like putting on my sunglasses. In the background Kris’ set meandered from tough to uplifting, towards the end typified by tracks like ‘Blueprint’ by Carl Nicholson and ‘Veracocha’ by Carte Blanche.
Marc French, the infamous Heat resident, came on and took the levels up a few notches higher with some high powered hard trance. By half three things were looking progressively quieter, with only a handful of people dancing and a few more occupying the spaces on the sofas. I chanced my arm again in the chill out room. The sounds of some quite strange drum and bass were being served up to some pretty tired looking people, the danger of coming out straight from a hard week at work I would suppose, but it was still no closer to being a chill out room, more a room 2. So we decided it was time to make our exit into the balmy night and on to a picturesque stroll over Tower Bridge.

Hopefully they’ll be able to get things in order for the next party. I think more work should be put into the sound issues to provide a proper chill out room and the games idea is still an interesting one that should be explored. On reflection it reminds me of upstairs in the 414, still the only place you can go week in week out for a cup of tea and a chat and still hear some great music downstairs or even Synergy Project and their chill out space with cushions scattered here and there and Baraka playing on the big screen. Stace and Anthony Dean were fantastic and we should hear more of them on London’s scene. Otherwise ,some good ideas were let down by various factors. Good luck next time.
