Kito & Sati present the ONEness Festival of Dance: a fundraiser for EveryChild

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 11-06-08 00:43

There are currently 121 million children in the world who don’t have access to education and 246 million are forced into child labour to survive. It’s an incredibly tragic situation that leaves many of us feeling helpless and depressed, and with another major economic recession hitting, things are only going to get worse. Fortunately this weekend there is something you can do to help: go out clubbing to the ONENESS Festival of Dance at The Medussa Club on Saturday night.

Dean Holley aka Kito and Kamila Kuplowska aka Sati have put together a massive line-up over four rooms of psychedelic, techno, hard dance and chill, with all proceeds going to the international development charity EveryChild. EveryChild is committed to protecting the most vulnerable and excluded children in the 17 countries they currently work in and giving them a chance to grow up in loving families with a safe and secure future.

EveryChild projects are all about instigating positive and sustainable change, from trying to protect the 80% of children physically abused every day in parts of Peru, to the estimated 100 children in Cambodia forced to cross the border into Thailand daily to pick vegetables to survive. Other projects include tackling the issue of abandoned children in the Ukraine; launching a parenting handbook to try and stop domestic violence in Guyana; teaching parenting skills to potential foster families in Russia; and trying to keep children off the streets in Ethiopia, where 98% of the population struggle to live on less than £1 a day.

For more information about the wonderful work they do and to make a donation check out www.everychild.org.uk, or come to Brixton’s Medussa Club this Saturday night, where Kito and Sati give you the opportunity to go clubbing and simultaneously support this critical cause. We asked them down to Thirsty Thursdays last week to find out more about their important endeavour…

You’ve both been familiar faces on the Brixton scene for a while, both being residents of Carnage as well as DJing at Antiworld events. For those who don’t know you both, please give us some background. Where are you from and what inspired you to get into DJing?

Kito: I remember always wanting decks when I was a teenager because my Dad used to DJ, and I always liked to have a go mixing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and some strange Wombles tunes!! I love what a DJ can give the crowd, that’s what makes it so special.

Sati: I was born in Poland, and always wanted to have something to do with music. I can’t sing unfortunately. I fell in love with Dean’s turntables since first touch.

Why the names ‘Kito and ‘Sati’?

Kito: Complicated questions!! Kito was a name that got given to me in Ibiza, though I’m not sure I can reveal why on a public forum!! Kamila’s nickname used to be Satan, but we decided it’s better to be an angel (Sati) than the devil...

What style(s) of music are you into and how would you describe your sound(s)?

Kito: At the moment I’m really getting into my techno as there are so many places to go with the music. Most the time I’m mixing hard dance with elements of psy and techno all splodged together.

Sati: Psychedelic trance and breaks.

What DJs and producers do you admire the most and why?

Kito: DJ-wise I used to love watching people like Mark EG for what he gives the crowd, Mark Sinclair for his pure energy and people like Beamish for their amazing music. I can’t wait to be playing back to back with him on Saturday....

Sati: There’s too many good producers to mention.

How did you both get involved with Carnage and when did you become residents?

Kito: I started Carnage with a group of friends as we all enjoyed playing at house parties and decided to move it to the next level.

Sati: I got involved with Carnage about two and a half years ago and took over the visual elements of the night such as flyers and decor.

You’re both promoting the Oneness Festival of Dance next Saturday. Is this the first event you’ve promoted? What do you think makes a good party?

Kito: I’ve run Carnage parties for four years and Demented parties two years previous to that, and you learn a lot each and every party you do. The party for me is all about the energy you create, which comes out in how much love you put into it. The clubber can feel a genuine party from a money-spinner from the moment they walk through the door, and it’s got to be fun first and foremost before anything else. Oneness is taking our parties on a step, as it is all about us all being part of the same spirit and working together for a better future.

The Oneness Festival of Dance is a non-profit event with all proceeds going to EveryChild. Could you please tell us a bit about EveryChild and why you chose it as a charity to support?

Kito: We wanted to choose a charity a lot of people could relate to, and EveryChild is devoted to helping lots of children in many different countries who are vulnerable and at risk. Rather than going in as foreign aid workers implementing their own ideas they work with communities and governments to bring about positive lasting change.

You’ve got four rooms of psychedelic, techno, hard dance and chill out. How on earth did you put such a huge line-up together?

Kito: I love all these types of music and it’s a credit to the DJs who are all showing they have great commitment to clubland and beyond. I chose all the DJs carefully for artists who are in it for the right reasons, and know how to have a party.

How did you both first meet and what got you into playing music together?

Kito: In a bar in Willesden through D-Viant who I run parties with. She had squeaky shoes. We started playing music together when one day she decided this can’t be that hard and picked up some headphones!

What have been the highlights of your musical careers so far? And what goals do you have in the future?

Kito: Playing Brixton Academy was nice and the Ramada Festival in Poland was beautiful — three days of psy trance by a lake in a forest in the middle of nowhere... I’d love to do more outdoor parties and parties in different countries such as Brazil, Japan and Ibiza.

Sati: Starting to work with Antiworld. I’d love to play in Ibiza.

The flyer for ONEness is beautiful and I’ve always loved the Carnage artwork. How do you come up with such wicked designs Sati?

Sati: Every flyer is unique and is based on the character of the party. For me flyers need to show what the party is about.

We’ve spoken about the fact you were a regular at Escape from Samsara Dean and it’s partly what got you both into DJing and promoting parties. Do either of you aspire to be more commercial DJs and promoters or would that take the fun out of it and ruin the Samsara ethos somewhat?

Kito: We both play music we love and are happy to play it wherever its wanted. The parties are evolving all the time, but I would definitely say they are not commercial and are probably becoming more underground as that’s where the true spirit of parties are.

Last year you both played at the Ramada Festival in Poland. How did this come about and what did you play there? Did you get a chance to check out anyone else on the line-up?

Sati: Ramada Festival was an unforgettable experience. We met so many friends and saw a lot of great DJs.

Are you planning on going to any festivals this year? With the festival season upon us again, what are your top tips for holding it together and making the most of any festival?

Kito: We’re going to the Summer Solstice (the original tribal festival) and the Boom Festival in Portugal.

What do you say to people who tell you that dance music is dead?

Kito: Music will never die out.

Sati: Huh??

You both regularly play for Antiworld events. How did you meet Enrico and get involved with Antiworld?

Sati: I started chatting to him at an Antiworld afterparty.

Kito: I’ve loved Antiworld since the days of The Indoor Festivals. You won’t meet a more genuine promoter and it comes through in the parties he puts on.

Sati, you’re playing in the breaks room at We Loved Infected 001 on Saturday 9 August. Is this a change of direction for you or have you always been into broken beats? Can we expect some psy breaks?

Sati: I used to be involved in running a breakbeats and drum ‘n’ bass club in Poland so fell in love with that type of music a long time ago. Psy breaks — who knows!! I’m always interested in new music, so come and check it out yourself...

What are your top five tracks to get the party started at the moment?

Kito:
‘Are U Ready?’ (Andy Whitby)
‘Technologic’ (Daft Punk — Psychedelic)
‘Save my Soul’ (Jon the Dentist)
‘The First Rebirth’ (Jones & Stephenson)
‘Purple Haze’

If you were stuck on a desert island and could only take five albums with you, what would they be?

Sati: The Prodigy — ‘Experience’, Orbital — ‘Blue’, Pearl Jam — ‘Ten’ and some random progressive psy.

You both cook up some wicked sets behind the decks. What’s your best non-fail recipe to cook up in the kitchen?

Kito: Polish sausages with ketchup.

If you had an unlimited budget and could throw a party, where would it be and who would be on the line-up?

Kito: And outdoor festival somewhere hot with Carl Cox, Hernan Cattaneo and Mark EG.

Sati: Likewise, an outdoor party somewhere in Brazil. With Hernan Cattaneo, myself and my dear Kito.

Sati you’re playing in the main room at ONEness and Kito you’re in the techno room? How on earth do you decide which of you plays where? Is it not tempting to have you both headline the main room?!

Sati: Each party is different so it depends on what we fancy playing for that particular night. It’s about the atmosphere we can create in every room.

Finally, why should HF readers come to ONEness next Saturday night?

Kito: For an experience they’ll never forget...

Sati: It’s a special party, not just the same old Saturday night out.
