Insekt Saturday 13 May reviewed: let the music do the talking!

Reported by Claire99 / Submitted 17-05-06 17:37

It was Flash Point’s 3rd birthday and time for me to head off to the stunning Fire club for another night of hard house. But it wasn’t any old hard house, it was Insekt’s version and boy they know how to party. They said ‘let the music do the talking’ and it did just that: Insekt spoke loud and clear.

Over the months Insekt has gone from strength to strength, it’s one of those unique parties that take you on a harder journey, starting with a slower bpm of chunky funky and dirty grooves, building to the harder side of house up to 160 bpms. The venue itself is perfect for hard house, nice and intimate with plenty of comfortable seating areas spread across three rooms.

The main room boasts an inviting dance floor with wicked trippy coloured squared lighting and a few disco balls hovering above spreading twinkly lights across your feet as you dance. The dj booth is bang smack in the middle of the dance floor, a perfect spot for interaction and there is a bar to the right of the dj booth. Leading off from the main room to the left is the Fire Pit, which has a completely different feel, tight knit and intimate with seating to the left and the right, perfect for mingling.

I arrived nice and early and was greeted by a long queue and there was a real buzz in the air. This weekend the Northern team from Housewives Choice were hosting the Fire Pit, so they had a massive coach full of Northerners come down to support them and join in with us Southerners. What a friendly crazy bunch they were and I have to admit they did themselves proud and partied just as hard as us Southerners, which really created an immense atmosphere in both rooms all night long.

The small crowd that had arrived as early as I had were hungry as soon as they got inside, as they immediately were on their feet dancing around the gangways and near the bar, waiting eagerly for the club to fill up — they sure were ready to pounce onto the dance floor! First up on the decks was early trade resident Peter Ward, who mixed really well and played a good warm selection of tunes, dropping in old classics such as ‘Black Dogs’ and ‘Devastating’ to tempt more people into dancing. It didn’t take long before people slowly merged together onto the dance floor.

Following Peter Ward was Frantic’s Steve Maynard, who quite simply blew me away, his mixing was tight and his tune selection was awesome. I loved the way his set grew so swiftly, which made the crowd become even hungrier and by half time the dance floor was rammed, sending the atmosphere right through the roof. When Steve dropped in ‘600 Mins’ and ‘Just Cum’ I had a sudden burst of power in my feet and was stomping as hard as I could, I love those tunes.

After his set I popped into the Fire Pitt to see what I was missing and Cat was behind the decks cranking it up nicely, with the whole dance floor was the palm of her hands. Everyone was going crazy, reaching to the ceiling as hard as possible. I remember wincing as I squeezed onto the dance floor, I was scared to stay in there too long in case someone had my eye out — those Northerners certainly know how to party hard. I really hope they join Insekt sometime in the future as I thought having the North joining the South was a brilliant move.

It was hard for me to tear myself away but the atmosphere in both rooms was just electric. It’s times like these I wish I could clone myself so I don’t miss anything! But I had to stay faithful and go back to the main room, as it was Flash Point’s own James Nardi next and what a set that was. He too played a brilliant set and kept me dancing with great floor fillers such as ‘Don’t Stop’ and OD404’s ‘Beat Dis’ which I hadn’t heard in such a long time. I thought James’s own version of ‘Black is Black’ went down brilliantly with the crowd. James upped the pace nicely and it was good to hear tunes that I’d not heard before, another thing that you’re guaranteed if you go to an Insekt event.

Next up following James was Dynamic Intervention aka Mik Cree, who was awesome and took the dance floor up another level by dropping in Justin Bourne’s mix of ‘Access’ and Marc Johnson’s mix of ‘Great Responsibility’ — again a really great set that gradually built the whole room up into a frenzy. It was pretty difficult to choose a favourite set as everyone’s mixing was pretty flawless and the tune selection was spot on. Each dj had clearly thought about their set as they were clearly constructed extremely well. That’s what I love most about Insekt: that they always have a high quality dj line up and you know you’ll blown away more than once. I couldn’t believe how rammed the club was and I think the Insekt team were in a state of shock too, I remember seeing Marc Johnson standing by the dancefloor in the main room staring into space and I thought to myself, “about time eh!” And I’m certain he must have been was thinking along those lines . . .

And last but no means least, finishing the night off with a bang were Insekt’s hot residents Marc Johnson and Justin Bourne, with a world exclusive two hour back to back. So it was off the dance floor for Marc and behind the decks to join Justin. What a way to end the night off, they both worked together tightly and played brilliantly together, both dropping in some great crowd pleasers, my favourites being ‘Get Back’ and ‘Hot Tamale’. At one point I even saw Justin having a bop behind the decks! Both djs looked in their element as they built there set up, lifting the crowd up and up with each tune, sending them into a higher state of euphoria. The sound was perfect, the people were friendly, and the lighting and lasers looked wicked as they bounced around the dance floor.

I really recommend this party to any hard house fanatic, especially if you’re passionate about hard house and would like to steer away from the typical classic hard house tunes that you usually hear out. Insekt is very different to any other party, it has a very relaxed atmosphere and when you’re on the dance floor you feel like you are part of a tight knit community. The sound system is crystal clear in both rooms, the people are friendly and the music is always brilliant all night, not forgetting the spot on mixing. When’s the next one?
