I would say House and Techno are pretty much the same these days. D&B... No idea about how popular that is.
Trance is huge at the moment though and there are big events on all over the country every week. You already have DJs at Techno events playing pitched down classic trance.
2017 will be the year of Trance.
I cant see it leap frogging techno. I may not go out but still keep up to date with listings.
In Europe, trance may be bigger than techno but only just.
I was never into trance as found it a bit boring and liked hard house a lot more. Shame the Hard House scene died, I dont think there will ever see a scene like 1998-2005. Was epic

Dude. You're not making music professionally. At the moment you're about to be 2+ grand down in the hope of getting your name out there.. You just make that money back (But I doubt it), You wont make any profit.
Sorry not trying to stamp on your dreams but you need to be realistic in these things.
You are considered professional if you generate wealth from your artistry. Weather I break even or not is irrelevant.
If I sell 1000 copies I break even. We just might sell that amount with the quality of the material I'm hearing. I would be happy just to sell 500 and take a loss though. Losing out on a grand every 2 years isn't much different to the days when I was buying records.
Latex Zebra Yeah, something is probably happening somewhere.

You've said you're DJing for free at the moment and you're in debt making music.
How are you doing it professionally? Your prime source of income is benefits.
All DJs at "our" level are likely spending 90% of anything they earn on travel or tunes so if the hobby pays for itself then great. If not then we carry on because we love it.

I'm not self sufficient from my craft. I will certainly be a professional producer if I am generating wealth from it. Yeah the fact I'm DJing for free atm means that I'm currently an amateur.
When I take off hopefully again, I will just charge for rail/bus fare at first. Which means I won't have to declare it.

I think you're putting too much into the term professional.. .People expect professional behaviour from DJs and people making music but walking around calling yourself a professional unless it is your prime source of income, is just window dressing.
Your peers will think you're up yourself and the real professional will think you're a blagger.
But then you like using language in provocative ways and this is no different to other examples.
No matter. It's really not a biggie.

I'm not at all. I would consider you a professional as I assume you get paid for your sets. As I will consider myself one when I am back in the same position.

It's semantics. I work for the council for a living, that is my profession. When DJing/Producing overtakes that then I am professional in that area.
No one claims benefits professionally so it looks like you're closer to take the title professional DJ before me.
If you want to earn money as a DJ you need to be prepared to play any music to any crowd. I know plenty of jobbing party DJs who earn a reasonable living.
Most DJs, who play underground music in clubs, don't earn any real money, certainly not a wage. That's not why they do it.
