Stu Hirst's in the Boutique for Lost Dawn

Reported by Craig Gunn / Submitted 18-02-11 17:19

Lost Dawn launches its smaller ‘Boutique’ concept at Paul Jack’s new venue The Raving Buddha on March 26th this year. Lost Dawn have chosen headline act, master producer and DJ of Global Underground fame STU HIRST to kick off the first event. After a successful NYE gig for GU in Singapore - Stu brings his brand of uplifting progressive madness to Lost Dawn. Stu has firmly established himself as one of the UK's most exciting talents, with over 20 underground hits on such labels as Subversive, Distinctive and Plastic Fantastic. He also produced one of Pete Tong’s favourite tracks "Rhythmique", which also featured in Steve Lawler's Lights Out CD Compilation series, released on Global Underground. We took time to speak to Stu to find out what he has coming up and to talk about his career so far.

For the un-initiated could you describe the Stu Hirst sound?

Melodic. I've made almost every style of electronic music in my time, but there's always been an underlying melody, be it a bass line or riff that tries to capture people's attention.

When and how did you move from being a DJ to a producer?

Early 2003, in Edinburgh, through a friend of a friend, I met John Vick who was Justin Robertson's engineer. It was the next natural step after 6 years of DJ'ing. The first two tracks we ever made were Electronique and Rhythmique which came out on Steve Lawler's then Harlem label.

You have an impressive CV of clubs and countries you have played but which has been you most memorable and favourite gig of all time?

Tough question. I guess the first time I played the Arches in Glasgow was immense, probably my favourite club in the World for atmosphere. My second Space Ibiza Closing Party set was fantastic. Also La Mania in Romania and numerous gigs in Lithuania, where the crowd are always amazing. It's hard to pick just one.

How did you get involved with Global Underground and where has your
affiliation taken you?

GU were always one, if not THE label I always wanted to sign to, they've had such a big influence on me. I sent some tracks through to them in 2007 and they snapped a few of them up. I've gone on to sign 5 or 6 tracks with them, and a remix or two. They've been included on numerous compilations and as time went on, I was asked to host their Ministry Of Sound Radio Show. I'm now doing that fortnightly in 2011. The affiliation is probably the one thing I’m most proud of - they're one of the leading brands on the planet.

Which technological advances have influenced you most? What kit do you use and what technologically do you think will be the next big thing?

As a producer, I think just the power of computers. My studio Mac now can handle an incredible amount. Years ago, even when I started, it was a far more time consuming process. I've finished tracks in under 3 hours before. That would have been unthinkable, even 7 or 8 years ago.

Program wise, I swear by Ableton for getting all my drum samples together, then Logic for the arrangement part. I've yet to really explore Traktor, but the big guys are raving about it (excuse the pun!).

Native Instruments Komplete 7 is the best software package I've ever bought - I use the synths in every track.

There is a vast amount of talent around in the EDM scene but whose sound is floating you boat at the moment?

Joris Voorn, Samuel L Session, Kris Menace, Deetron, I buy pretty much anything these guys produce.

Who is your biggest influence?

Another tricky question, because I have different influences in different parts of my life. In dance music, people like Sven Vath. Steve Lawler has had a massive influence on my earlier career and Stuart Price as a producer. The guy is a genius.

Can you tell me the strangest thing someone has requested of you whilst you’ve been in the DJ booth?

"Can you play something good?", "can you play something we know", "have you got anything we can dance to?" The best was probably "can you say happy birthday to my friend on the dance floor".

Your dream rider item would be?

An albino he-she, or lager. Whichever is easiest. :-)

What are you currently working on and when is the next big release?

I have a couple of collaborations with an upcoming guy called Neil Browne - we've got EP's on Baroque and Brown Eyed Boyz. I'm also working on some material with a German artist called Sebastian Tolk, who I'm a fan of. I've spent 3 months working on solo material as well, so I have about 7 or 8 tracks ready to go - a few I'm holding back for around Miami time. I've also been working with Scarlett Etienne, doing a bit of engineering for her and also some remixes. Some of her material is a bit more pop-orientated, so it's nice to work on new styles.

When you are not writing and mixing what hobbies do you have to relax?

I play guitar in a gigging covers band. That takes up a fair bit of time. And I'm a big Leeds fan (for my sins!) so I still make quite a few games.

For wannabe DJ’s and producer can you give us some pearls of wisdom?

Have fun. Don't expect too much too soon. Listen to other producers and the techniques they use. There's no point trying to copy the big 'sound' of the moment, it's about individuality and trying to create your own unique sound.

As headlining act at Lost Dawn’s ‘Boutique’ event at the Raving Buddha in March what can we expect from you?

A good party. Smiles. Huge hangovers.

Update: Lost Dawn’s hotly fought DJ competition final is being held on 24th February @ The Raving Buddha where one of 7 lucky finalists battle it out on the wheels of steel to hopefully a supportive crowd – the winner gets the chance to play with Stu Hirst on the 26th March.

West Londons’ hottest new venue Raving Buddha will be our home for a DJ competition on the 24th February and first Lost Dawn event of 2011 on 26th March - called ‘Boutique’.

Our ‘Boutique’ headline act is master producer and DJ of Global Underground fame STU HIRST. After a successful NYE gig for GU in Singapore Stu brings his brand of uplifting progressive madness to Lost Dawn. DJ, Producer, Remixer and Label Owner Stu has firmly established himself as one of the UK's most exciting talents, with over 20 underground hits on such labels as Subversive, Distinctive and Plastic Fantastic. He also produced one of Pete Tong’s favourite tracks "Rhythmique", which also featured in Steve Lawler's Lights Out CD Compilation series, released on Global Underground.

Stu runs his own digital label, Strawberry Blonde, whose artist roster includes talents Livio & Roby, Chuck Lepley, Murray Richardson and Tim Andresen, as well as aloowing him to release under his "Rockstaar" guise. The label's first release, "Choral" climbed to number 5 in the USA Balance Promote Chart. Stu also presents the Strawberry Blonde show on leading electronic radio station Proton Radio.
Having shown his skills at clubs including Space in Ibiza, Global Club in Lithuania, Amsterdam Dance Conference, La Mania (Romania), Privilege (Ibiza), Nautilus (Latvia), Gravity (Lithuania), Ministry Of Sound, The Cross, Heaven, Colours and Storm we finally welcome him warmly to Lost Dawn and the Raving Buddha.

KITES star Richard Baldwin aka Stakker has been a lifelong devotee of electronica. He has played at, and promoted events showcasing many dance genres but more recently has been co-writing and producing tracks with upcoming Indie/Electro band, KITES. Since the band's first gig 8 months ago, Richard has enjoyed a hectic schedule, playing keyboards with the band at over 40 gigs across the UK. From this colourful background, Richard spins the kind of sounds that have in turn come to influence KITES' sound, expect something different...ItaloDisco, Electro, Synthpop, Acid and Proto-House

‘Boutique’ also sees the first officially installed set from our new resident TOM GALLAGHER. Having produced some stand-out sets for us in 2010 we wanted this new young talent to pioneer our sound with his sense of smooth tech house produced from his myriad of live performance technology. Expect original samples and slices from this future hero.
