Paradise City 001 Preview: From free parties in pubs to private jets—interview with Antiworld promoter Enrico Sorbello

On 4 December 2004 London is going to experience one of the biggest dance music festivals it has ever known: Paradise City 001 at Alexandra Palace. With one of the hugest and most eclectic lineups London has ever seen, packed with top international names playing alongside the most respected of the UK underground, those who attend will be treated to a who's who of top psy-trance—in fact, this party is a collaboration with Israeli psy-trance wizards HomMega—techno, hard trance, hard house and hard dance, as well as a chillout area of epic proportions. An 11-hour show with capacity for 7,000 people, the production budget alone is probably more than the GNP of a small developing country!
HarderFaster catches up with promoter Enrico Sorbello, who in the last couple of years has literally gone from throwing free parties for his mates in his local pub in Tottenham to hiring private jets to fly around top international djs. And why is he flying top international djs around? So they can play at a party in a palace!
You can perhaps be forgiven if you've never heard of Enrico before. Antiworld, the party he and a few friends started a couple of years ago, prides itself on being an underground event. For the Antiworld crew, it's all about playing the music you love without compromising your integrity. So what's with all these top international djs then? And why Alexandra Palace? HarderFaster learns that there's certainly more to this Guns 'n' Roses fan than meets the eye...
When did you first decide you wanted to be a promoter? Did you start djing first or promoting?
I started djing first. I used to be part of a group of people involved in Escape from Samsara, so started mixing then there was a group of us playing, but we weren’t enjoying the music in the clubs any more, so we wanted to do our own party.
Have you always been a raver or a clubber?
I started clubbing in London at The Fridge and the first party I went to was Escape from Samara. I did some clubbing back in Italy, but they were cheesy clubs for kids. You can go clubbing in the morning or the afternoon in Italy because clubs are 24-hour. They were more discothèque style with Ibiza house—there was no trance, techno or hard dance.
What music influenced you when you were growing up? And now?
Guns & Roses! That was it . . . and The Doors. I wasn’t listening to much music when I was growing up, but was exposed to my sister’s collection—Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Supertramp. I wasn’t really into music at all.
Psychedelic Academy
What were you into?
Going to the beach! I’m from Sicily, so we go to the beach a lot with our family and friends. Music comes second when you can go to amazing places like that where you listen to all kinds of music. You go to the beach in your car, smoke a joint, listen to Pink Floyd. Then I started working in restaurants. I left Sicily when I was 16 and went to work in Switzerland for five years. San Moritz was very posh, a ski resort for millionaires. I worked in a 5-star hotel so didn’t have much time for clubbing, just the pub. The clubs there were as bad as Sicily—all commercial music. I’d go to those clubs cos all my friends would go, but I never understood why people went clubbing. I was still in the dark.
How long have you lived in London? Why did you decide to move here?
Nine years. I followed my previous job working in restaurants, bars & 5-star hotels. I got a job in the Connaught Hotel—a top hotel of the Savoy Hotel chain. Although San Moritz was posher!
Why the name Antiworld? What inspired the concept?
It’s a bit of a long story about the name. It comes from my ex-wife Katerina. She’s from Montenegro, part of ex Yugoslavia. She didn’t have a valid UK visa, so she couldn’t work or study and was constantly moaning about life and going to the pub every day. The only thing that put a smile on her face was going to The Fridge on a Friday night. She came up with the name ‘Antiworld’—a kind of compromise. When you go to a club you forget. You’re not against the world, but you forget your daily problems. It doesn’t make so much sense in English, but then we don’t have so many English in our world. Most of our crowd is Italian, Russian, Brazilian, international, so the name has a very powerful meaning for a lot of our crew, especially in Italian!

Your first party was upstairs at a pub in Tottenham. How long ago was this? Did it all go according to plan?
It was at the Black Boy pub in Black Boy Lane, my local pub just around the corner on the 3rd October 1999. Yes, it more than went according to plan! It went so well we got asked to do it every week, so we started doing it every week and it was always packed with 200—300 people! But there were no flyers, only friends! Everything started to get more complex when those friends started to increase their friends and wanted to play. And they’ve played pretty much all parties since!
So you started getting a good crew together at the Tottenham parties then moved to a bigger venue? Why The Drome? Can you remember any particular parties from these days?
The first one at The Drome was incredible. We thought we’d get maybe 100 people because it was the first time charging and everyone was complaining so much and calling me to get on the guest list. But it was very very full—we couldn’t fit all the people in so The Drome gave us another room as there were so many people outside in the cold. It had no music but they needed somewhere to go. We weren’t allowed the whole Drome, only what’s known now as Deep Blue, the chill out area. Plus it was a Friday, so we were up against The Fridge. We all djed so we just needed a place to play. It was so busy and it changed everything completely from the beginning. It became a serious thing after that—‘O my God, it can work!’ It was just trance and techno as I didn’t have a clue then about psy-trance. I knew I liked the music but I hadn’t had time to sit and think about it. We always had a lot of trance as we liked it.
What’s the best party you’ve thrown over the years?
My favourite was Psychedelic Academy but I think the best was 25 November 2000 @ The Drome. It was the very first party we did on a Saturday night and the first time we did the whole Drome. We had a queue around the whole place and security said there were too many people to let in. Somehow everyone got there so early!

The worst?
The 1st Antiworld birthday. Anyone who knows about Antiworld knows why. It’s too late to comment on that.
One of the things I’ve always loved about Antiworld parties is the wonderful eclecticism of styles between the different rooms. Do you have a favourite musical style? What kind of music do you like to play?
Put it this way—at the moment my favourite style is psy-trance. But I also like good techno, hard techno, like Chris Liebing.
Did you see him at the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs party?
No, I didn’t know he was playing, I was sleeping. I’ve been so busy I’ve had no chance to sleep! I like all good music. I like good hard trance but I don’t like . . . I can’t say! . . . Hard trance started Antiworld and I respect that. But psy-trance and techno completely took over the audience. Whoever made hard trance stopped and started making hard dance and we’re not particularly into hard dance. That’s why Antiworld is there, because it gives an alternative to the usual hard dance and hard trance events, there’s hundreds of those around. There weren’t parties where you could get psy-trance and techno . . . and now we have acid techno!

Who are your favourite djs and producers?
My favourite dj is always going to be Beamish, no matter what people will say. My favourite producer is always going to be Astrix—he’s a genius. Of course there’s lots more, it’s impossible to list them all! Beamish got us into all this so he’s never going to miss an Antiworld party. We’ll fly him from anywhere! Without Beamish there would be no Antiworld—plus he’s a good friend, he gives me good advice.
Psychedelic Academy was one of the most incredible events I’ve ever been to. Will you ever do another?
O yeah! We’re actually working on it now so we can start promoting it at Paradise City. We’ve sold over 1000 tickets abroad already and people’ll go back to their own places. If we catch them with a Psychedelic Adacemy flyer they’ll come back. We’re trying for the bank holiday in May as it’s an international bank holiday so should be big!
You’ve been quite a champion of Israeli psy-trance. What go you into psy-trance?
It was my friend Danni—who’s brain damaged! Her name is Daniela Zanardi but we call her Danni, but in Italian it’s damage! She’s a very crazy girl, put it that way! She kind of forced me back in the Drome days to open a psychedelic temple stage, so she could organise the lineup. As I said before, my knowledge was next to nothing. She did the first three parties, then I saw obviously there was good feedback. People loved it! The psy-trance stage was getting busier than the Antiworld stage. People should be aware that Antiworld wasn’t about the psy though, it was based on a different feeling and music.

Why the name Paradise City? Are you a Guns n Roses fan?
Yeah! We’re going to use more of their names to describe our music. For example in January we’ll do Appetite for Destruction and every room will have the hardest music! It’s so cold in London we need fast music to make things warmer!
What other promotions are involved in this event?
It’s mainly an Antiworld party. Goodgreef are helping us with the hard dance stage where Antiworld would struggle, as they’re the number 1 hard dance event in the Northern UK so we thought it was a good idea to ask them to help us. They’re very well organised and have sorted us a top hard dance stage, which we may have failed with.
The lineup at Paradise City is one of the best I’ve ever seen. How did you choose it? Was it hard to decide who you wanted to play?
Well on a smaller scale it’s what we do at SE1, for example in May we had Scott Project in one room and Marco Bailey in another. It’s the same concept, although maybe here we did think about booking artists who are the more famous. But having said that, there’s so many underground acts! It’s a compromise between the underground and the big act names, for example, Michel de Hey—no-one seems to know about him in the UK but in Rotterdam he’ll sell out a place like Brixton Academy. He’s an amazing dj. The combination of the big acts, like Mauro Picotto, LAB4, Infected Mushroom, gives us the chance to get more up and coming acts to the fore.
What additional production are you going to be bringing in for such a massive venue?
The Teacher! Do you know what The Teacher is? The Teacher is what Pink Floyd used to have in their world tour. It’s 70 foot tall and 65 feet wide. It’s already booked and it’s taken me almost three years to find a venue it’ll fit in, Brixton Academy is too small! The Teacher is one of the most psychedelic things—you can park cars under his hands! When I was seven years old we went on holiday to Valencia. My parents didn’t know there was a concert on, but there were 50,000 people in St Marco Square, one of the biggest squares in Italy and that was the first time I saw The Teacher! That was it, just this massive abstract object. I couldn’t believe it when they gave me the number to book The Teacher. He’s the biggest inflatable—nothing is bigger than that! It takes loads of people to take him down as you have to know how to fold him! It’s the first time he’s come to London in his history, we believe.

Please tell me you’re using Halo Lighting—their stuff at Psychedelic Academy was awesome!
Yes, of course! Actually it was Mark from Halo Lighting who suggested I try and get The Teacher, as I’d said I always wanted to use him!
Why Alexander Palace? Is this really the first Psychedelic Party ever to be held there? What was the story with all the stuff that went down there in the hippy days?
There was another party in 1967, a psy party with people like Pink Floyd. I don’t know what kind of relationship you find between Pink Floyd and Infected Mushroom—but there is a connection! There hasn’t been a party in Alexandra Palace since then like this!
I heard a rumour that you’re paying for a private jet to fly some artists between events. Is this true?
Yes, we’re flying Yoji to Dance Valley after he plays and flying LAB4 back so they can play. The private jet idea started because we were trying to come up with the main attractions for the Antiworld stage and a lot of artists were going to be away—LAB4 at Dance Valley, K90 in Australia, The NuNRG Collective in New Zealand. So it was like, wicked, I’m going to do the biggest party of my whole life, I’ve got a huge room, but who am I going to play? My only chance was to fly LAB4 from Amsterdam, which isn’t really such a big deal if you know the right people. Then I thought, if Yoji plays early he can play in the Netherlands as well, and LAB4 can come back. That pleased Dance Valley and us!

What room do you think you’ll spend the most time in at PC?
If I can spend some time I’m gonna make sure I catch Astrix, Liebing and Picotto. The moment you start thinking ‘Which room?’ you’ve got an issue there, because every single room is worth seeing! Let alone with the sound systems. It’s going to be loud, much louder than the Academy, but it’ll be loud, not distorted, especially if you’re hanging round the psychedelic stage! My sound engineers know what they’re doing and if they’re using a sound system they haven’t used before they know what to do. The big wall of sound thing has passed. New technology is all about small things, so you’re going to get the most unbelievable sound system when you look at it, but when you hear it, it’ll go through your bones! It’ll be completely different from Psychedelic Academy, where you have the balcony so have to make sure people up there can hear the music play. But Alexandra Palace is all on one level.
Do you have any other plans for the future?
I’m looking forward to Summer 2005 and the Sonica 2005 in Italy and the Full Moon Festival in Germany. I’m going to be selfish and travel Europe for a couple of months. I don’t really want to go to that many festivals—or just go for one day and one night, for me that’s enough as I don’t really do drugs any more, just smoke and drink beer!
