HarderFaster gets its freak on with Swedish duo Ticon

Swedish duo Filip Mardberg & Fredrik Gilenholt met in 1991 through a mutual love of underground electronic music, they began producing together in 1995 but it wasn't until Digital Structures contacted them in 1999 that their path became clear and they founded Ticon. With a passion for techno, their sound walks a fine line between progressive house and trance giving their sound a unique, uplifting property that since their first album release in 2001, has seen them go onto tour the globe for the last ten years plus.
HarderFaster was lucky enough to catch up with them in between shows for a chat about their history together, studio production and their forthcoming show at this summer’s most exciting new progressive trance festival Noisily Festival.
How did the two of you meet and start producing your own music?
We met thru Fredriks younger brother, who went to school with me (Filip) back in 1995. Fredrik was listening a lot to hardtrance and teckno which was totally new for me. We became friends relatively quickly since Malmoe (Sweden) is a small town and any "odd" music directions and lifestyles were not greeted with the best of respect. Fredrik also played around with an Amiga 500 and a 5-channel tracker sampling sequencer program and one day we started to make a track together. I remember that we had to put the kick in the left speaker and the bass sound in the right since there were not sufficient channels to house all the sounds!
What are your favourite synths in the studio?
We have had (and still have) so many! Although it is rare this days to use outboard equipment, we still use quite a lot of analog and other "physical" synthesizers. The Moog Voyager has been a workhorse in the studio for many years but we always turn to the Access Virus in hard times.
What do you both do in your downtime?
Listening to music, drink beer . . . and then do it all again!
Is there any competition between the two of you or do you work together in seamless harmony?
We have an open studio as we call it. There is a lot of gear to play around with and we both run around and do whatever falls into our minds. As long as someone remembers to push the record button we have no problems, but no competition. Fred is good at what he does and I’m good at what I do, in this case drums, production and so on and Fred is really great with the music and sounds.
What is the most important part of a DJ set for you both?
First, we mainly play live. Which is a big difference. We play around with our songs to fit the dance floor and to have a connection both between the crowd and the people on the dance floor is the main key!
What does the near future hold for Ticon? Any new collaborations, remixes or original releases planned before the summer?
Many things are going on now in the studio. We are soon releasing our first remix album with some of the best trance and prog trance artists (in our opinion) spanning our carrier for over 10 years so we are really looking forward to that. We are swell in the process of making our sixth full length album with Ticon which will be out on Iboga. Third, but not least we have just started a new band together with our good friend and owner of Iboga rec, DJ Emok called 'Critical Choice'. We focus on the classic "Scandinavian old school trance" and we will have an album out this year as well!
If you could work with anyone in the studio, who would you pick?
God, Jesus, a beer and Pink Floyd (not necessarily in that order).
Your playing a Noisily festival in the UK this summer. What can we expect from your performance?
We have what we think a great set up for the festival season this year, new tracks is coming out of the studio like never before and the focus is more trancy pumping old school style. Like it should be in the sun we believe!
Finally, what was your highlights for 2012 and what are you looking forward to the most for 2013?
Highlight of 2012 was that we got a new studio sot it's been super inspiring and in 2013 we are looking forward to a lot of cooperations with musicians and of course touring around the world!

Taking place over the second May Bank Holiday weekend marking the official start of summer, Noisily Festival will open its gates allowing revelers to pour into one of the most unique festival sites in the country - an ancient woodland playground - to be greeted by a haven for serious music lovers to party the weekend away in superb natural surroundings, mind-blowing installations and unique innovative arts program.
Noisily 2013 features two main music stages: The Tipi and The Tree House. The Tipi plays host to electro-house big-guns Plump DJs alongside a superb selection of electro and breaks acts on Friday. Saturday focuses on techno and if last years headliners Spektre and Matador are anything to go by, expect some great names! Sunday sees Bristol-based outfit Real Nice roll out fat and funky disco joints. Saturday and Sunday kick off with electronic live music from acts like DEMS and the superb Mt Wolf.
Heading over to The Tree House London promoters Saints Don’t Sleep, who’ll be bringing a selection of cool house guests alongside residents. Saturday sees another London-based promoter Soltek who specialize in bass-heavy beats featuring one of the hottest names in futue house Dale Howard (Noir) and Mak & Pasteman (Lobster Boy) Finally Sunday is aptly named ‘Psychedelic Sunday’ featuring one of the leading international progressive psychedelic performers on the planet Perfect Stranger headlining ensuring Noisily 2013 finish with a bang.
Music stages are licensed until 6am all weekend with bars licensed until 5am.
Although its heart is set in the pulsing rhythms of dance music, Noisily is also a place of artwork, performance and participation. We invite attendees to get involved - we want you to be part of Noisily, whether it be just by dazzling the crowds with your finest dance moves or designing and building an interactive art installation. We are merely Noisily’s curators. With multiple plans already flooding in that will amaze and hypnotize you, this years festival will be a place that takes your breath away.
