Sinewave Function

Reported by Andy Force / Submitted 22-05-09 11:31

Encapsulated in the harmony of grass and mud, trippy lights, organic cider and the pulsating soundsystem of a great English psy trance festival, one has to question, as you stand acid dazed and slightly drunk in the middle of a field at the height of summer, how each piece of finely tuned colour, light and sound made its way to the space and time that you find yourself in at that moment…

Or perhaps you don’t. But nevertheless, a world away from the paradise of this audio-visual prestidigitation is a routine of dedication, perseverance and relentless refinement of creative ideas. And for one artist in particular, it is his own unique brand of refined psychedelic sounds that have stirred up a buzz of excitement at the heart of the psy trance community.

Sinewave’s tracks have a “whisk me away to a field and a pint of cider” quality to them that a lot of other music can’t induce when you’re in your living room staring at a laptop. He combines the best elements of progressive and full-on, creating a fusion that carries a mechanical drive, without losing the hypnotic melodies and ambient synths. And for good measure his tunes have a kick-arse driving bass-line that bears the potential to induce the need for a change of underwear in the listener.

And if you haven’t had the privilege of reaching for the underwear drawer just yet then we’ve caught you at a good time because Sinewave’s been keeping himself busy — his debut EP is hot for release; he has an album in the pipeline; and he’ll also be headlining Magnetix, where he will be performing a live set on the 29th of May. We’ve no doubt he’ll be showcasing some of his fresh material to a hoard of eager party loons.

Magnetix is certainly no festival, but we try our best to scoop up the raw talent emerging on every face of the trance scene, combining a love of music with a creative energy that inhibits our notion of knowing when enough is enough. And whilst organic cider probably isn’t on the cards, we work our sweaty socks off to bring you the best in light, sound and colour to the backstreets of Brixton several times a year. 2009 is a competitive year to be putting on parties, and we simply aren’t satisfied until we’ve put together something that can help you lose the four walls around you as we take you on a journey through all your senses. Come with us for the ride….

Good afternoon Spencer, thanks for joining us. Please tell us about your experience that brought you into the psychedelic trance scene; where did it all start for you?

I was in Melbourne in 1996 on holiday and stumbled across a small record store. At the time I was listening to a lot of industrial metal and EBM music. I saw a cover of a CD called ‘Goa-Head Volume 1’ that had a Buddha face on the front. I decided to check it out and put it on my CD walkman (old school hehe) with the headphones. What came out of the headphones was this incredible twisted and melodic track that I had never heard before. From then I started furiously collecting music at every opportunity, but I had no idea there was actually a scene at all.

It wasn’t until about a year later that I found out there was a small club night on a Tuesday with some DJs who had just come over from traveling in Goa. I met a DJ called Killian, who became a good friend and he introduced me into the outdoor party scene. I started to go to beach and forest parties in remote parts of Western Australia, and went to the infamous Bush Doofs all over the state.

You have a new EP due to be released and also an album in the near future; what direction has your sound moved in and what influences have motivated you towards it?

The EP is a culmination of years of influence while traveling and playing in the UK, USA, Australia and Brazil and will be coming out on 24/7 Records at the end of June. This is a preview of things to come for the album, which will be released on Mutagen Records from the UK later in the 2009. There is a real variety of sounds on the EP but the newer material is moving towards a deeper twilight style than the melodic sound that I am renowned for. There will always be that melodic element there, but I’m working towards a more hypnotic and tribal sound.

You’ve now left behind your DJ Spencer alias and perform live sets of your own material. What do you incorporate into your show to give it an edge, musically and technologically?

I’ve recently been deciding to get back into DJing after a long hiatus as I have been enjoying playing back to back with DJ Mif from Mutagen. This has inspired me to get back into the spin again. In terms of live show it’s all handled by Ableton live and I have designed loops and sample elements which are synchronized with the beat so I can drop new breaks and sounds over the top of the tracks and do EQs and effects live, much like you can on a Pioneer CDJ — but this has the added bonus of dropping in loops and live synths on top as well.

Ableton makes the experience for the performer a lot more interactive and more exciting for the dancefloor because you can do the unexpected drop. I can’t imagine using anything else to be honest. I am also thinking about adding interactive visuals into the show to have a more audiovisual experience.

You made a spectacular appearance on the main stage at the Waveform festival last year, which I remember with great excitement. Festivals and psy trance go together like yin and yang! What plans for some outdoor mayhem do you have lined up for us this summer?

This may sound crazy but I’ve decided to put the gigs on hold for a few months so I can concentrate on finishing the album. Of course you can catch me at the festivals as a punter wobbling on the dance floor and you’ll see me with my head in the speakers down the front most of the time.

When I speak to other psy trance DJs they all tend to agree that some of your best work was ‘Vurt’, a remix of Zen Mechanics. What other artists have you been working with or remixing since then?

The ‘Vurt’ track was such a pleasure to work on because the original elements of the track were so tasty and Zen Mechanics is also the sound I really like to hear when I am out at a party. That’s no secret really as all my mates will testify to that. Recently I’ve been working on remixes and collaborations with Eject, Rinkadink, Dual Snug and M-Theory.

The new EP coming out on 24/7 features a track with Mental Broadcast from Brazil which is one of my favourites called ‘Mental Wave’. DJ Mif and I have also started a progressive full-on project that is yet to be revealed to the world, but is gaining a lot of interest already after our first track together.

One for the tech-heads: what’s your setup in the studio like?

I used to have a lot of gear years ago with synths such as the Juno 106, Korg Prophecy, Access Virus and the Novation Basstation. I ended up selling it all and going completely virtual with Cubase 4 and a bucket load of VST plugins. Some of the VST plugins that I commonly use are the Predator, FM8, Gladiator, Absynth, Poizone and Firebird. Throw the Sony Oxford mixing and Waves SSL eq and mastering plugins on top and you have a pro studio setup on your laptop.

I currently use a black Macbook in the studio which runs Windows XP. For monitors I use the Dynaudio BM5A speakers running through a Mackie Big Knob (I know sounds good huh?!) connected to an RME Fireface 400 card. With that set-up and a good sounding room I get good results. I also have a Digitech RP3000 multi-effects pre-amp for my guitar which is just begging to be used but is sitting in a box gathering dust.

What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

I was in Australia on my way to the Rainbow Serpent Festival and a person said to me “Only dead fish go with the flow.” Since then I have used that as my motto, as I always like to do things different than others. I like to lead where others follow.

As an Australian, what can you tell us about the psy trance scene back home? Is it thriving as well as in some other parts of the world?

The Australian scene has always been a pioneer in my opinion and I think it is at the forefront of progressive and abstract dance music at the moment, with labels such as Zenon leading the way and forging a sound that is really catching on in the rest of the world. You cannot go past probably the best festival in the world which is Rainbow Serpent every January outside Melbourne, which has this incredible earthy vibe with the most amazing friendly people. I was there in 2008 and had one of the best festival experiences of my life. I was in Brazil before that and even though they have huge festivals there, nothing compares to having a portable eskimo fridge on the dance floor filled with cold beers and champagne with your mates!

Where do you see yourself in five years time, and what are your hopes, dreams and ambitions for your musical career?

I can guarantee that I will be chilling in Australia near the beach with a sweet studio and organic permaculture garden, living off the land and making music in five years time and as Japan is just around the corner I would like to travel there regularly to explore the beaches and mountains and learn the language and culture.

Sinewave’s EP on 24/7 Records (licensed by Mutagen) is due for release in the very near future. He’ll be performing a live set at Magnetix on the 29th May.

But enough of the past and on to the future, and we’re very proud to bring you all the info for our next event:

Magnetix @ Club 414 – Fri 29th May 09

One name that is sure to stir up excitement amongst psytrance lovers, producers, and DJ’s alike; all of whom eagerly anticipate his every release or live performance, is SINEWAVE. Currently riding high in the psychedelic scene here and abroad, his live act signed to Mutagen Records and releases on high profile labels such as Geomagnetic and Neurobiotic, he has been carving a reputation as one of the scenes most promising talents; whipping up a frenzy at The Waveform Festival, Wonky Disco and a host of big parties. SINEWAVE will be sure to bring his unique blend of heart throbbing basslines fused with hypnotic psychedelia, and leave Magnetix in a state of furore.

Not content with bringing the live talents of Sinewave down, we’ve also enlisted the help of Beyond/Excessive Pressure head honcho and all round rising Trance star Steve Allen, who will also be making his Magnetix debut. If being involved in the creation of 4 labels so far in his relatively short career is not enough, this mans productions have the backing of just about every superstar DJ there is in Trance. And when his tunes aren’t getting rinsed by the likes of Tiesto and Armin, he’s busy playing on the same bill as the Paul van Dyk’s too! But don’t take our word for it, check them out here: http://www.trackitdown.net/search/keyword?q=Steve+Allen&searchButton.x=0&searchButton.y=0

We’re also proud to present one of the recent winners from the Hard Dance Awards: Nick the Kid. After rightfully home the Regional Hero award, Nick has continued his relentless charge on the scene, with recent single “Enigma” charting in just about every download store worth mentioning as well as Radio 1 airplay, this is certainly one Kid to look out for in the future, and another making his 414 and Magnetix debut!

Finally we have Kito, our last guest for the evening. Kito has been rocking the underground scene with a multitude of parties such as Carnage, Oneness and Tribal Dance at the Medussa club for a while now. Kito is also no stranger to the 414, holding a residency at Spin as well as Fridge based Colours. A very versatile DJ who could easily fill any timeslot and still fit in with our strict music policy meant he was always going to feature for us at some point, the only question was when!

Backing up our strongest line up to date is the ever ready Magnetix residents, Phil Lankester aka Libra 9, Dean Zone and Andy Forse.

As per usual we’ll have 50 copies of the latest Magnetix Promo CD, with Vol. 6 this time being mixed by our very own Andy Forse. And remember, if you missed out on any of Volumes 1 – 5 then you can download them all, along with lots of live sets from the previous Magnetix events from our website, www.magnetixuk.com!

And for those of you who don’t want to go home come 06:00, the FREE Magnetix After Party will be running till very late, with Macloud, Kevster, Timmy Whiz and Lorenzo Barrero!

The Magnetix Promise:
Please note, we here at Magnetix are not content with just turning up, putting up set times, switching on the decks and playing some music. Oh no. It is our mission to give you, the clubber, a much more personal clubbing experience.
On the night we will be decking out Club 414 to the max.
Expect psychedelic décor, vinyl give aways, free mix cd’s courtesy of our special residents for the first 50 people through the door, a UV stall, free tickets to other events and lots more.
Couple that with the best chill out room of any club in London, dedicated club Photographers, a roof terrace for the smokers and of course, the legendary 414 café (what other club in London can you get a Cheese Toasty from?) and you’d be mad to miss out! We are also doing our best to support new talent and push new DJs. With a strictly any type of Trance music policy, we are always open to receiving demos. Just hand your demo in at the door when you arrive. All demos will be listened to by a member of the team and you will receive feedback.
