The Record Player has a simple premise: each month we pick an influential year in musical history and host a night where we only play tracks released in those 12 months. It's a club night devoted to the sheer thrill of music you might not have been old enough to enjoy the first time round...
Welcome to 1980.New dawn, new decade, new music, new recession. Maggie tells us she's not for turning.
1980 - it's all about the bands. Bands are really really big. ABBA, The Police, Blondie, Pink Floyd, Roxy Music are all pop royalty. Who shot John Lennon? (or more importantly for some...who shot J.R. Ewing? )
1980 - lets all wave goodbye to the ridiculousness of the 70s shall we? On no hang on D.I.S.C.O's not leaving without a fight so '80 gives us monster hits from Oddessey, ABBA and Diana Ross.
Mod/Ska mayhem starts to smash up the charts;Madness, The Specials, The Jam and The Beat all take pop music in a very new and very British direction.
1980. Love tore him apart. RIP Ian Curtis.
New decade, new toys...the UK chooses the Mini Metro and Roller Blades and Phillips make the first ever CD player. It'll never last.
The UK gets super trendy with stonewash jeans, Fruit of the Loom t shirts and a pair of brand new Kickers.
Round the world America chooses a movie star President whilst Zimbabwe chooses some bloke called Mugabe.
And 1980- surely an amazing year for films - The Blues Brothers, Fame, Empire Strikes Back, Mad Max and Airplane!
Happy new decade. Welcome to 1980 everybody. And don't call me Shirley.
