Turkey is a perfect example of what happens when the EU meddles, as is Ukraine.
The UK has to take some responsibility for Turkey's situation, we've been encouraging the EU to accept them as a member for years, same as
Eastern European countries.
Merkel lit the blue touch paper inviting migrants to come to Europe.
When the migrants came in increasing numbers, the EU did a deal that Turkey would keep them in return for money and fast-track EU membership.
Cue fucked Turkey, restless population and ripe for change, and an even more fucked Southern Europe.

I'm pretty sure this is an accurate summary but there may be other factors I forgot or missed.
Ukraine was recent enough that I remember. The EU was cosying up to the UK and talking about membership but it was obvious Russia couldn't allow one of their main naval ports to operate in an EU territory hence the fighting.
