Now in to its 11th year, hard-house stalwarts Tidy are currently re-grouping and preparing for Tidy - the next generation. Taking a small break from their usual quarterly appearance in London, Tidy are working flat out to bring us the Tidy Weekender at Prestatyn in October. For those not going to the Weekender though, and for everyone who are missing Tidy from the London club scene, you should get yourselves down to Area Night Club in Vauxhall on Saturday 15 September!
Tidy are back in town and this time it’s with a Twist! Tidy favourites will be there; the awesome Tidy Boys, Paul Maddox and JP & Jukesy join stable mate and Twist resident Sam Townend, along with Karim and Tom Basquil. Ahead of Tidy's only Summer visit to London, I caught up with Tidy and Twist's Sam Townend to find out what is going on up a Tidy HQ, and what we can expect from Tidy with a Twist.
Ru: You’re playing at Tidy with a Twist in London on Saturday 15 September. As one of the residents of Twist, are you going to be representing Twist or Tidy that night?
Sam: I shall be representing both brands as im obviously associated with both. I suppose I’m kind of a “middle man” on the night
Ru: Tidy has not been in London since the Lisa Pin-Up tour launch at the end of April, why is that?
Various reasons, there has been a lot of change at Tidy towers recently, so before we started gallivanting around clubs up and down the country, we had to build a firm view on where we are going with the brand, and re-assess how we where doing certain projects. London was one of the things that needed looking at, hence the break from events down there.
Ru: Tidy with a Twist follows hot on the heels of Slinky vs. Twist and I note the weekender this October has “hosted” rooms rather than all-Tidy arenas. Is this a new direction for Tidy?
Not as such, we have many more solo events and projects lined up for the remainder of this year and next. We just thought it would be fun to have all the brands in one place celebrating the hard house scene as a whole and what better place to do it than the Tidy weekender! This weekender is definitely going to be a special one!
Ru: How is your new alias with Deano as The Tidy DJs going?
Very well thanks, me and Deano have been playing together for the last couple of years as a part time back to back duo, so it’s good to have some new direction with it all. Deano just needs to learn to control his wind as it can get a bit smelly in small DJ boxes when he gets excited and jumps about too much
Ru: Deano said it was you that’s responsible for filling small boxes with just hot air! You’re booked to play in the Frantic room at Capital Carnage as the Tidy DJs, and of course at the Weekender in October, where else can we see you play as the Tidy DJs?

Ru: How different (or similar) is your solo sets in sound from that of The Tidy DJs?
Pretty different to be honest. When I’m playing by myself I go for the more ‘underground’ sound; very groovy, chunky hard house with the odd bit of techno thrown in every now and again. When we play it’s very much the ‘party’ sound with hints of disco jazz.
Ru: You’ve been label manager at Tidy for a few months now. How is that going?
It’s going cool thanks, it’s been extremely busy and I had a lot to learn but its all starting to come together now.
Ru: You recently mixed Tidy’s contribution to the Designer Labels compilation album (CD two by Riot DJs Ed Real and BK, and Paul Glazby on CD three for Vicious Circle). The Tidy disc is a bit of an evolution in style for the Tidy brand, would you agree with that?
Yes and No. I’m trying to bring back the real vibe of hard house, so the sound of the label is evolving, but the end result is aimed at bringing back the love, in effect its looking back to move forward!
Ru: Tidy with a Twist is at London’s Area Club, have you played there before? What is the venue like?
Yes I have played there once before at blast and it’s a very nice space. Very modern and flash.
Ru: How do you think the no-smoking rule has affected the clubbing scene?
To be honest it’s not had that much of an effect from what I can see. It's made some clubs smell of stale beer and puke a bit and it’s given some promoters an excuse to make more money by charging people to go outside, but apart from that it’s not too bad.
