In a full-on mood: Rave preview with psy trance producer Pixel

Reported by Kiko / Submitted 28-06-06 18:23

Hailing from Herzliya, a city in the centre of Israel, Eli Biton Tal is otherwise known as psy trance dj and producer Pixel. Born in 1979, he got in touch with the scene in his country in early 1990s and started to make his own music in 2000, thanks to tutor and mate Ido Ophir (aka Domestic). Three years later, Pixel signed with Israel’s leading label Hommega, where he released his debut artistic album, ‘Reality Strikes Back’. As a result, he’s been touring around the world ever since, fattening even more the vast list of famous Israeli psy trance producers.

I caught up with him between his gigs in São Paulo, as a build-up for his set at Rave — The International Indoor Festival on Saturday 22 July, at the SEOne complex. In this interview he talks about how everything began in his life, the results of his project alongside Domestic and reveals what he’ll be playing at his two-hour dj set at Rave next month. Needless to say we also mentioned the World Cup, as he’s currently in Brazil and can be considered a Brazilian expert — he’s been here more than 10 times!

Hi Eli. How are you? Where are you right now? I’ve read you are in Brazil at the moment. Is this your first time?

Hi! Yeah, I’m in Brazil at the moment. I love it here, I must say . . . . First time?! Nooo . . . I’ve been here more than ten times.

Duvdev, of Infected Mushroom, once said: “I think today (Brazil) is the best place in the world to perform, by far! Brazil wasn’t good 7, 8 years ago. Today, for sure, it’s better than Israel.” Do you agree?

Well, I do agree that is the best place to perform, but I wasn’t here 8 years ago. I first came over in 2002 and it was already pumping!

Are you watching the World Cup? Is Ronaldo overweight? I’m joking . . . (by the way: this interview was done before the 20th of June, just in case Brazil lose!). How did you get involved with electronic music?

Sure I’m watching! “Vai Brasil!” (Go Brazil!) Ronaldo is “muito gordo e um pouco velho” (very fat and bit old), but big respect for him anyway.

Well, some friends introduced me to trance music. The scene in Israel is quite old. We’ve had parties going on there since the early 90s, so I went to a couple of them and started to like it. This is where it all began for me.

When and where did you start djing?

I started djing at the end of 1999 and productions came around mid-2000.

In 2001 you started a project with Ido Ophir (aka Domestic) called Dual Head. Please tell us more about this partnership and the reasons why it lasted only four years.

Well this project is still alive — and kicking off! In fact, we did two new tracks just this month. Ido plays a big part in my producing journey as he taught me from zero how to create music. During the last five years we’ve made quite a few tracks, but we decided to stay focused on our own projects. So we just call it now Domestic vs Pixel.

When did you sign up with Hommega?

I joined Hommega in November 2003. It feels like a home for me, all artists are my friends. It’s a good environment to be at.

You released your debut album ‘Reality Strikes Back’ in 2004. How has it been received by both media and the public?

I believe it has been received quite well. Feedback was positive, both from the public and media. I’ve been touring the world quite hard ever since, so I guess I’m quite satisfied. Anyway, I’ve got bigger plans for the next one.

Have you got any projects in the pipeline? When is your second album due?

The second album is planned for early 2007, hopefully.

Where do you feel most at home: djing or in the studio, producing tracks?

Hmm . . . hard to tell. Let’s say the studio is the bedroom and the party is the balcony.

What do you do when you aren’t gigging?

Mostly producing. I’m traveling a lot now gigging, so when I’m at home I try to use the time I have to be in studio. Once a year I go on holidays to Goa as well, between February and March.

What have you been listening to recently?

Anything, basically. Mostly chilled stuff and all the classics, like Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Massive Attack and Air.

On the 22nd July you’re playing at SEOne complex in London. What do you prefer: gigs in clubs or playing outdoor?

I dunno actually . . . . Outdoor, I guess. Indoor parties can be really powerful too. Well, depends, when, where . . .

What people can expect from your 2-hour dj set at Rave?

I’m going there straight after five weeks in Brazil, so I’ll definitely be in my full-on mood. I’m gonna play most of my new tunes and some others that I like — I’d say half and half. It’s gonna be fun anyway!

More: ResistAnts and Never Enough, in collaboration with Antiworld & Hommega Productions proudly present “RAVE – The International Indoor Festival”

Rave: v. to speak wildly, irrationally; to roar; to attend a rave.
n. the act or an instance of raving; an extravagantly enthusiastic opinion or review; an all-night dance party, especially one where techno, house or other electronically synthesized music is played.

Who better knows the meaning of RAVE than Never Enough Maria? She’s been working in the clubbing industry week in, week out for the last five years and now has teamed up with ResistAnts (Luisinho and Helio) for the first time, in partnership with Antiworld and Hommega Productions, to bring you RAVE – The International Indoor Festival.

Featuring a truly international line-up of the finest live acts and DJs from France, Israel, Germany, Portugal, South Africa and of course, not forgetting Brazil and the UK, we will take over the magic arches underneath London Bridge for an unforgettable instance of RAVING, a truly experience of all-night long mayhem.

The Main Room hosts the best in full-on psychedelic trance, with live performances from French Talamasca and Brazilian The Full On Project. Making their exclusive UK album launches, Israeli Intelabeam (Hommega) presents Looking for a Cure, while countryman Idor Ophir aka Domestic (Hommega) showcases his debut artist work Art Making Machine. Also, DJ sets from Antiworld residents Kristian and Sutekh, Hommega’s Pixel, Digital Hive’s DVI-X (Brazil) and Digoa Vs Kanan (Brazil).

Have you ever thought about a bigger hard dance act than Lab4? We neither, so our Hard Dance Room is dedicated for those who like it as harder and faster as usual. Joining Adam and Lez, Frank Ellrich aka A*S*Y*S – Acid Save Your Soul – spins his German hard trance sound for the second time in the SEOne Complex, alongside Hard Dance Awards 2005 Best DJ Proteus, from Finland. ResistAnts Portuguese DJs Vega and Rui M and Samba boy Marcelo Marques complete the bill.

Last, but not least, the Electro & Techno Room, hosted by Never Enough. This time, though, with as many skillful Brazilians as the international squad. Making his London debut, godfather DJ Murphy will play the latest in techno, having performed recently at the Skol Beats festival. Water Republic DJ agency bring again to the UK prodigy boy Vitor Lima and his elbow scratching skills, followed by rising star Phillip A. NRGFlow’s Mike Redina presents his techno set accompanied by JK Theory on percussion, while Kinky Mambo’s Eduardo Herrera will be canning his electro-flavored poison. If you fancy a funky Brazilian beats set, don’t miss Ponana’s very own Eddie Santos playing back to back Carnival expert Alec Fasani (Reaction DJs). To finish off in great style, Terry Brian featuring Saffa Cherry Crush.

So book a day-off on the following morning, as the 22nd July will be like celebrating the World Cup title.
