Monday to Friday. Nine to five. We all do it (well unless our name ends in Hilton). It pays the bills. It finances our weekends out. It supports our out-of-control vinyl habits. In most cases it’s a necessary evil . . .
Now imagine your job means having to talk to some of the biggest djs in the world, do their bookings, accompany them on gigs . . . oh and that’s right, dj for the greatest Ibizan hard house night ever, Extreme Euphoria vs tidy at Es Paradis.
Meet Simon Eve from Most Wanted. That’s his job. Jealous? We caught up with him, pinned him to the floor and told him he should seriously think about taking on an assistant while waving our CVs frantically in his face.
Then we got him to spill the beans on everything from what a dj manager really does, what it’s like to play alongside Anne Savage and the mighty Tidy Boys, and why he’s all for djs mud-wrestling at the next tidy Weekender!

You played on the opening night of Extreme Euphoria vs tidy at Es Paradis with Lisa Pin-Up and Rob Tissera. This week you’re playing alongside Anne Savage and the Tidy Boys. What’s it like playing alongside such major dance floor legends?
Ooh . . . I’ll be a quivering wreck behind the decks! Or a wreck of some sort anyway!
What’s the vibe like out in Ibiza?
Ibiza is vibrant and liberating. It’s party night seven nights a week and everybody’s out to have a good time. Let’s face it, it’s not often you can go out for a large one on a Tuesday night and not give a toss about what Wednesday holds in store! It’s great to mix with party people from across the UK and Europe in one spot — it’s kind of like the Global Gathering, Dance Valley and Berlin Love Parade crowds altogether on the White Isle.
Why should clubbers choose EE vs tidy over other Tuesday nights on the Island?
Extreme Euphoria vs tidy smashed it in 2005 — against some pundits’ expectations — and this year it’s just got bigger and better by the week. Quite simply, it’s the most pumped up party on the island, with energetic music and the most up for it, un-pretentious crowd around. If you miss Extreme Euphoria vs tidy and go elsewhere you’ll be sick with envy when you hear the reports afterwards!
Have you any idea what kind of set you’ll be playing, or do you read the crowd on the night and go with the flow?
I always go with the flow with my sets, although with an Ibizan night you always know to pack a few more anthems in the bag as the place just goes off big time when you drop a familiar tune. My probable set in three words: Chunky, funky, uplifting.
What’s your biggest Ibiza tune at the moment?
Too many to choose from! There’s a few Marcel Woods re-edits and cut ups that go down a storm, including his rework of ‘Cherry Blossom’, then Lee Haslam’s remix of R.O.O.S. — ‘Instant Moments’ is sure to go down a treat, plus some great new material by BK and Nick Sentience who are on fire once again. Oh, and there’s a cheeky little remix I’ve got of the Arctic Monkey’s by Sander van Doorn that’s sure to turn heads on the dancefloor!
[b]We’re over halfway through the season now. How do you think this year has compared with others?
Extreme Euphoria vs tidy appears to be going from strength to strength week on week and year on year, and generally the island as a whole seems to be a bit fresher this year. Less of the old tourist traps and more nights with cutting edge music winning the day — just the way it should be!

So many people have said hard house is dead, others are proclaiming Ibiza over. What are your thoughts on the subject?
Hard house is dead? My arse! Just look at the turnout at tidy events around the country, the Polysexual arena at Global Gathering the other week, or the pulling power of underground brands like Paul Glazby’s Vicious Circle. Sure, hard house isn’t a global force. But it never has been and none of the people who matter ever intended it to be. It’s a UK grown phenomenon that’s also going strong in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the USA, and some parts of Europe. Extreme Euphoria vs tidy is the first ever hard dance night to succeed in Ibiza — fact.
Ibiza over? Mi culo! There was a period when every man and their dog tried to start a club out there and the island was over-saturated with second rate nights, but things have reached a happy and havin’ it medium now. Cream, Subliminal, Meganite, Judgement Sundays, Space and Cocoon, to name but a few, are all rammed every week alongside Extreme Euphoria vs tidy on Tuesdays.
You don’t just dj for tidy, you work as one of their dj managers too. How much work goes on behind the scenes to put together an Ibiza season?
The Ibiza project has a whole team of people working very hard on it. In fact plans for this summer started way back last year. My involvement has merely been getting the line-ups together each week, and that’s a stroll in the park compared to marketing and promoting the night around Europe and out on the island itself week in, week out. Did you know you need to get licenses for people to promote out on the streets of Ibiza this year — insane!

If there was one DJ that you could grab for the tidy agency, who would it be and why?
Ooh, controversial! Name-dropping could be perceived as ‘tapping-up talent’ by other paranoid Management companies! We’ve already got the best line-up of hard dance DJs on the planet, so it would need to somebody exceptional who could offer something a little different. There are one or two I’d consider . . . but I’m keeping their names to myself for now!
You just held the finals of the tidy DJ Magazine competition at Heaven last weekend. Who won and how did they impress the judges?
It was a very close run thing in the end — all five finalists were worthy contenders for the winning spot. However, in the end The Colonel (Ian to his mates) just edged it. He worked the crowd particularly well, took his set places, and got a real hands-in-the-air reaction without resorting to playing the most obvious tunes. Congratulations Colonel!
I imagine sorting out djs to play at a regular event must require an awful amount of organisation. When you’re involved with something as big as the tidy Weekender 10, how much more of a mission is that?
You’d have to ask Russell or Kelly at tidy for a proper insight into everything that goes on behind the scenes for Weekenders. My involvement is limited to getting the dj scheduled. Kelly gives me a wish list of djs. I tell her she can’t have who she wants. Kelly and I have a row. We make up again. Simple really!

The theme this time is Superheroes — what’s been your favourite theme so far?
There’s been lots of highlights from the Weekenders to date. I’d say it would have to be a tie between the Dirty Weekender, the Wild West Weekender and the Pirates of Prestatyn as then I could be a dirty robbing cowboy — a bit like some dj agents!
Have you ever felt the urge to don a pair of tights and wear your knickers on the outside?
I used to go to Trade at Turnmills on Sunday mornings back in the day . . . but my presence there was more for the music than the lingerie — honest!
Have you ever rescued a damsel in distress? Helped an old lady across the road?
I seem to remember rescuing Amber D on tour in Oz once. But I need to keep my other superhero activities firmly under wraps . . .
What Superhero would you want to back you up in a fight and why?
Batman would be a fearsome ally. He’d need to leave the ridiculous Robin at home though — he could sit at home doing some knitting or something.
Would you be a hero or a villain?
Hero. There are far too many villains in the world already.
If you had to come up with the theme for the next Weekender, what would you do?
I think a WWE/UFC theme would be good. DJs could battle it out head to head with decks in a ring or cage on stage, plus there could be sumo-suit contests and similar side-shows. Maybe even celebrity wrestling matches — who would your money be on in a battle between Paul Glazby and Rob Tissera?!

Interesting and informative article. I have, however, to query the comment "It’s a UK grown phenomenon that’s also going strong in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the USA" I think this is wishful thinking on Simon's part and would seem to be at odds with the word coming back fom most, if not all, of those places?

Chris, I think Simon's comment is largely based on the fact that we still have plenty of bookings coming in regularly from these areas for the artists on the agency. And also the fact that Simon has been out to visit most of these places in the past year.
