Frantic’s 9th Birthday approaches with JP & Jukesy in tow

Reported by benz / Submitted 08-08-06 21:45

JP & Jukesy have really earned their proverbial stripes over the past few years, going from newcomers to some one of the biggest names in hard house in a very short space of time. Their talent hasn’t gone unnoticed, with the mighty tidy DJ Agency snapping them up and putting them on their roster alongside the likes of Paul Glazby and Paul Maddox. Anyone who heard their awesome Tidy Weekender CD from a while back will know that these guys are amongst the best — effortlessly gliding from dirty hard house to chunky techno and even to some more uplifting moments, all with tight-as-a-duck’s-butt mixing skills

They have become residents for the promising Nu Religion, and are will be headlining their room at Frantic’s massive 9th Birthday celebrations at Renaissance Rooms on 27th August. We caught up with them to find out what they’ve been up to since we last spoke to them in January . . .

We see you guys have been dabbling in the housey/electro side of things recently. How long have you been doing this for and is it something you have serious ambitions for, or will you just be keeping it on the sideline?

JP: The house thing is just a sideline for us. We have always been into many different styles of music and one day we got asked if we would do a house set somewhere and we thought why not. I will stress though, our main passion and future sits with hard house.

Jukesy: For me it’s something a little more. I’ve always been into house and this is something that is just bubbling under and will do for the next few years. Hard house is still my main passion but I honestly believe that variety is the key in whatever we do; not being pigeon-holed into one specific type or style of music is very important in this day and age. It’s a excellent string to our bow so to speak and one that I fully enjoy, there’s so much more variety of house tracks out there compared to hard house at the moment, so that aspect really makes it very exciting for me . . .

How have things been going with your label Deprivation? A lot of labels have found it very difficult in recent times.

JP: As with all hard labels we have felt the pinch so to speak over the last 18 months. Vinyl sales are down for all labels so it’s a case of keep plugging away and putting out releases we think will do well. In time it will turn round and come good again, it’s just a test to see who sticks with it all.

Jukesy: We shall be sticking with vinyl until the death, that’s our promise to the vinyl junkies out there! Hopefully it will turn around and that won’t be too soon!

Deprived of Funk — what’s that all about then eh?

JP: Does really exactly what it says on the tin! We saw the gap for early set material and with new producers like Digital Kid and Maddox’s new Olive Grooves sideline we thought, why not go for it? The first two releases have sold very well and we are happy in the way they have been taken in by the hard house faithful. In a way is going back to its roots with the simple slant, house music that is hard, lots of groove and funk and really the perfect way to start a night.

Jukesy: Again this is another promising step forward for our label in recent times, the first stage for us was to get this label out and about and then push it forward as a more of a peak time sound rather than just being a warm up sound. When I first started clubbing, the slower funkier sound was massive with big tracks crossing over between various types of djs and this stopped happening in hard house when things got a little too hard, so with time I’d like to see this style of hard house crossing over again. Andy Farley among others has always been a true believer in playing this type of style in his peak time sets and fair play to him and Frantic, they seem to be really pushing the sound with Digital Kid and we’ll be championing the sound at Frantic’s 9th birthday bash!

Out of all the various styles of hard house this type makes me the most excited! I love seeing people dance, smile and get into the groove rather than just putting there head’s down and stomping away

Are your tracks available online?

JP: For all deprivation material please head to tidydigital, we have an exclusive deal with them for the time being.

Jukesy: Moving forward over the next six months expect to see some kind of hard house collective store being set up so independent labels like ourselves get the full advantage of digital downloads. If any labels out there are interested in this then I urge them to contact me asap on jukesy@jpandjukesy.co.uk for further info.

You are headlining the Nu Religion room at Frantic’s massive 9th Birthday celebration at Renaissance Rooms on Sunday 27th August. Do you still relish the chance to bang it out in the capital?

JP: It’s always to get down to London and play, the crowds are always totally mad and enjoy all styles of hard house which is good for us as we can play across the board, depending on our set time of course.

Jukesy: We’re residents for Nu Religion and they put a lot of effort into their events and this really shines through in today’s tough market. Since we first started playing out Frantic has always been the one to play for in London and the one we are always really pleased to be included in there events. Being their 9th Birthday this is going to be one special event and we can’t wait!

How have your previous experiences with Frantic been so far?

JP: Frantic is name that all hard house lovers know, they have been around for many years putting on quality parties in London and around the UK and world. We have played for Will and the team on many occasions and they always have been excellent events both for us as djs and from the clubbers’ point of view.

Jukesy: Fully agree with JP on that, Frantic are renowned for putting 210% effort into their events and production and this makes them stand out above the rest in the capital. They always have massive sell out events and this definitely comes from the amount of effort they put in. Hopefully one day we might fulfil our dream of being on the foyer or main room line up at Brixton.

Looking back over your careers so far, what do you think was the wildest, most off-the-hook gig you have ever played?

JP: There have been a few mad ones over the years. I would say the strangest one was playing in a bar in Brum and the decks were set up in the kitchen! A very very odd place indeed.

Jukesy: Yeah that place doubled up as a pizza place and they were actually making pizzas while we were playing! They dropped a pizza and still sent it out to the person hahaha put me off pizzas for life!

We’ve recently played on the Club Contagious sound stage @ Global Gathering in 2006 and that was a pretty good gig, surrounded by a lot of beautiful young women and a massive crowd, it took a lot to concentrate on the job in hand!

DJ partnerships can often be very hard work. Have you guys ever had any major falling outs or have you managed to keep things sweet throughout?

JP: It’s all cool. There have been a couple of heated discussions over the years but they have been down to poor set ups or CDJs not working.

Jukesy: A calm home is a happy home, we are lucky not to have had any real arguments!

Describe each other in 10 words or less. And no rude ones please!

JP: Hard working, committed, persistent and very focused

Jukesy: Obsessive (sun beds), level headed, positive and calm.

Do you think hard house music is healthy at the moment? Do you find it easy to track down good new material or is it a bit of struggle?

JP: There will always be good new music around, it’s all about keeping an open mind and taking a fair listen to all the new stuff that gets sent. There is many a hidden gem on a B-side of a vinyl or on track 8 of a CD-R. The scene in general is not as big as it was 3 or 4 years ago but the standard seems to be a lot higher

Jukesy: It’s pretty easy to track down good tracks as we run various labels so we get sent quite a lot, some artists that have really impressed me recently are Digital Kid, Amp Attack and Steve Maynard. I think since digital sites launched there has been a small decrease in quality as there is less quality control these days.

How have your gigs in Ibiza been?

JP: We had a first one last week and it was quality. We nearly didn’t make it although due to a missed flight from Stanstead, which resulted in a 90mile dash to Gatwick in less than 1hr! We’re back over there on Aug 15th and can’t wait for it.

Jukesy: It’s a dream gig for any dj so it was really special, the crowd didn’t want to leave at 6:15am and they booed the sound guy so much we managed to get 3 one mores in! Can’t complain at a crowd that makes a sound guy do that!! In fact round of applause to all that were out there!

Frantic are staging a lot less events than they used to, with the focus on quality rather than quantity. Do you think this is a better way to operate or do you think it depends on the aims for the club?

JP: As long as a club puts 100% into each event they do I can’t really see it being a problem how many they do. There needs to be a good balance of weekly party’s as well as bigger one off events dotted around the country to keep things fresh.

Jukesy – These days people don’t want to go to weekly hard house nights, it’s just because trends change and that’s something the scene has had to move with. Everyone is now geared up for the big monthly events so Frantic concentrating on quality rather than quality is definitely a wise move, everyone associates Frantic with quality and in this day and age it has worked out really well for them.

As for being a better way to operate . . . at this time is the right thing for all clubs in my opinion, I was a weekly regular as a clubber for Sundissential, Storm, Godskitchen/Polysexual etc. in my early years and I’d love nothing more to see a return to weekly events. It’s clearly not the right thing at the moment. In a few years things may come full circle again and I’d definitely welcome it with open arms.

Do you think that London’s hard dance clubs could learn a thing or two from their Northern counterparts or vice versa?

JP: There is a definite divide between the two, musically and in a crowd way also. Both have their plus points and work very very well.

Jukesy: I think everyone has had to sit down and work together recently and we are seeing more and more collaborations of events and this has been a learning curve for promoters and everyone always did everything on there own a few years back. When people talk about the north/south divide I instantly think of tidy/Frantic. Both are massive companies and both are clearly at the forefront of innovation within the scene I’m sure there’s a few trade secrets that they are all aware of lol!

Funky hard house, as wicked as it is, will never have a massive share of the already small market. Has the digital download revolution made it a little bit easier to put out productions, so that you live without such a fear of recovering the costs as you would have to with a vinyl pressing?

JP: We have never put a track out which we thought may not do well. We have always been 100% on the tracks we have releases, including the Deprived of Funk material. We wait till the bulk of the stock has gone until we put any track up for download.

Jukesy: Yeah digital is very good for this but to be honest where possible we still like to put tracks out on vinyl. If it’s a good track then it will still sell enough in today’s market to make it worth doing and we’ve always been careful with our selection of tracks for our label and they have always sold! We have come across a few productions recently that we will be doing as digital only releases and see how it goes. We’ve never been at the forefront of digital as we still like to keep the vinyl candle burning!

Who in your eyes (and ears) is the most inspiring producer in hard dance?

JP: It’s a close call for me, I would go for Dom Sweeten. He just pips a certain Paul Maddox. Both make amazing tunes and keep things fresh and exiting.

Jukesy: In hard dance I’ve got 3 at the moment and it’s too tough to call it between them.

1. Digital Kid — He’s a sound guy and he’s been making some real fresh hard house this year, stuff that makes you want to dance and wiggle without the cheese element, just plain fun and energetic!

2. Paul Maddox aka Olive Groove — Paul’s been the leader of innovation for years now and can turn his hand to anything, his olive groove material has really been amazing this year!

3. Dom Sweeten — Dom is always on form with his hard material and he’s always experimental with his sound and always tries to push the sound forward.
