The HeatUK 4th Birthday party at The Brixton Academy... hard trance headliner K90 gives us the inside track on married life, getting ‘wobbly’ and DJing with his undies showing

K90 aka Mark Doggett is one of the most respected and popular hard trance DJs in the world. He has performed around the globe, including appearances in the U.S., Japan, Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands, and has been equally successful at home, with sets at Godskitchen, Slinky, Goodgreef, Sundissential, Frantic, Global Gathering and Creamfields.
He has a string of well-known releases, including the unforgettable anthems ‘Breathe’, ‘Deliverance’, and ‘Red Snapper’, and regularly showcases his talents with rapturously received live sets. The HeatUK birthday party is hosting the first leg of Mark’s Destinations album tour, with an exclusive 90 minute K90 live set — the only set of its kind in 2005. The album track ‘Ghosts in the Machine’, and Mark’s newly completed remix of ‘Red Snapper’ have both recently attracted the attention of none other than Judge Jules.
Along with Eddie Halliwell, Mark headlines the HeatUK birthday party. Here’s his take on life, love, and everyone seeing his pants.
After lining up such big names as Sasha for SW4, Heat’s gone back to the tough stuff with their birthday line-up. Are there any DJs that are too hard for you?
Aha, I can see what you’re trying to do here, you want me to name names! Well I won’t I tell you… I won’t! Of course there are some DJs that I find too hard for my own personal taste but hey, I have to work with some of ’em!
What DJs do you admire from styles that aren’t so heavy on the bpm?
I’m still a big fan of trance, so I’d have to say Armin Van Buuren and Ferry Corsten are still well up there for me. Also, like most people these days, I’m into the funky house sound.
Ever considered producing some non trance?
I have done on the last album… some little breakbeat bits. I would certainly do stuff in the context of an artist album, and the next album will definitely have some different styles. Plus when it comes to the day that I don’t do ‘dance’ any more, that won’t be it, I’ll want carry on in music for as long as possible.
You played Ibiza last year for the first time. How did the experience measure up?
I’d wanted to go to Ibiza for some time and once I’d become a DJ I said to myself that I wouldn’t go there unless I played. When I did get the chance it was a fantastic experience. I went out there with Heat… we did Space and a couple of smaller parties. I’m a big fan of the island… it’s just beautiful. When I got there I thought it was going to be wall to wall clubbing and I’d just be confronted with muppets, but it wasn’t like that. To be honest, if you aspire to be at the top, it’s one place that I consider as being an essential fixture on the calendar each year.
Tell us all about Destinations, your mix album.
People have been asking me to do a mix album for quite a while now, so I just thought it was about time. I’ve just been looking for that extra angle rather than just putting a mix out though. The first ‘Destinations’ instalment is based on my recent exploits on tour in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the live mix, there’s a — shall we say — interesting tour diary in the album notes!
All the gruesome details?
Not so much gruesome details, but it’s definitely an insight into what happens when you’re out of the country for that long. It’s a five week tour so it’s pretty extensive. It’s all about the going out and getting drunk and falling over, and that kind of malarkey. Sometimes you do just have time on your hands, and normally that means going out with the locals and getting wobbly.
And apparently you have an artist album out in 2006.
Well, yes that’s the plan. I haven’t set any dates as yet though. Who knows… it may be 2007. That’s one of the benefits of having your own record label… the only pressure on you is the pressure you put on yourself. I also want to take the tour diary thing up a level and produce a DVD to go with the album, like a kind of documentary.
You’re well known for being very energetic and enthusiastic behind the decks. Ever had any ‘mishaps’?
Nothing catastrophic… I’ve said it now haven’t I?! I’ll fall over on stage and knock my stuff over now! Hmm, mishaps… I can think of one minor one when I was playing a live set at the Fridge in Brixton once. It was probably about 4 or 5 years ago, but when I left the house I was in a real rush and when I got to the venue I’d forgotten the belt for my trousers! All the jumping around on stage kept causing my strides to drop… not completely, but I definitely played one-handed. I had to use my other hand for keeping my trousers up!
Summer's pretty much over. Do you have some good memories?
I’ve had an unforgettable summer this year. I got married in New York’s Central Park… it was totally unbelievable. We had about fifteen of our closest friends and family there, which made things even more memorable. This summer’s also been one of the best years I can remember for festival shows. Global Gathering, SW4 and Creamfields… all performances that were out of this world. 2005 truly has been an incredible year for me… one I’ll never forget.
What’s married life like? Do you have to remember to put the loo seat down and do half the washing up and everything?
Ha ha! No, we’ve got a dishwasher for that. We’ve been together about three years and lived together, so it’s no different really. Plus she comes with me everywhere I go. Travelling around can become quite a lonely experience, and when you deal with the euphoria of playing on stage it's nice to have someone to share it... with rather than going back to an empty hotel room.
OK Mark, your guilty secret is…
I don’t harbour any guilt or secrets, well apart from the trouser dropping incident at the Fridge! Thing is I don’t really feel guilty about anything — I’m a content person. You never know when that might change, so I just enjoy it while I can.

What a year it has been. After the sell out success of 20,000 people on Clapham Common, the creators of South West Four return to the legendary Brixton Academy to celebrate four years of mayhem inside the Capital!
