I have created a layer in google earth showing a water network colour coded by risk of pipe burst, red = high risk, blue = low risk and everything else is colours in between.

I've looked online to find out how to create a legend which will just sit in the bottom corner of the screen, and they're telling me to open the source file in notepad and edit it.

Firstly, this doesn't seem to work. Anyone know of any bugs or common probs with this?

Secondly, I thought google focussed on ease of use - after all these years is there really still nothing out there to help with what I would have thoguht was a pretty basic requirement?

Kindest and most sincere regards,
space

o/ to being a Google Earth Geek.

To create a legend you need to use the overlay tags but pin it to the screen, not the map. It can't be done in the GUI and you need to hack the kmz/kml file to include it. The legend should be an image first.

An example can be found here (taken from Google's kml reference page)

http://code.google.com/apis/kml/documentation/kmlreference.html#screenoverlay

or here

An alternative way to do it is to create a placemark with no pin and have the legend text in some html. That's how I do mine on my project.

As for the notepad bit I'm guessing you're saving the file as kmz which is zipped up. Either save the file as kml or rename the .kmz to .zip, open that and you'll see the kml file inside. You can then edit that with notepad.
