Pendragon preview with Antiworld's Sutekh

Reported by The Fridge / Submitted 30-11-06 19:38

It’s not every day dreams come true, but this Friday night at The Fridge they’re going to be doing just that. Many years ago Sutekh started going out to Pendragon raves in Tyssen Street and grew up regularly going to their parties for four years. The friends he met, the connections he made and the music he was listening to played a formative part in his musical development: in short, Pendragon got this up and coming dj into dance music.

Several years later, Sutekh is one of London most promising psy trance djs. When he’s not playing alongside the likes of Astrix and Infected Mushroom or back to back with fellow Antiworld resident Kristian, he’s out there cutting his teeth at a number of smaller underground parties like Roots, Implosion, Trance Central or any one of the many squat parties on London’s vibrant free party scene. No venue or crowd is too small — Sutekh just loves to play. Perhaps just as well known for his crazy on-stage antics and taste in haircuts as his driving uplifting psy trance, this is an artist who embraces the role of the dj as performer and entertainer head on, and if you’ve ever seen him play, you’ll know how much the crowd lap this up.

In addition to his dj’ing, Sutekh is also a central figure in the Antiworld promotions team, and with the last Antiworld Indoor Festival at SeOne on February 3rd looming, followed by the awesome 070707, there’s a lot to look forward to. First up, however, is Pendragon tomorrow night. I had a few beers with the man himself on the eve of his Pendragon debut...

For those who don’t know you, please tell us a bit about your background. Did you always want to be a dj?

Not always! When I was growing up I was really good at art. I studied art and design at uni. I grew up with guys like Cai (who did live PAs at Samsara) and Rio, who was part of the Pendragon crew . That was basically how I got into dance music. But before that I was into a lot of house, then hard trance, a bit of hardcore and all the early psychedelic stuff.

What inspired you to start mixing?

My friend when I first went to college — guess I should say I went to college twice! I met a guy who was mixing old hardcore and he basically got me into it. I started mixing on a really old record player with no pitch control, it was a really old belt drive turntable, with an old amp and I was using the left and right pan as a cross fader.. lol.

How long ago was this?

About 1998.

Who or what have been your musical influences throughout the years?

I’ve always been into all styles of music over the years. I love the old 80s electro like Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk etc. I grew up listening to a huge variety of music from metal, rock, country , classical and of course all the early dance music. I still mix and enjoy a lot of techno which I have a bit of a side passion in and still have a lot of the European hard trance, but nowadays I have regained my love with psychedelic trance music, and gained a lot of influence from the early Goa sounds of Astral Projection , Cosmosis and Hallucinogen.

Would you consider yourself a raver or a clubber in your youth?

What?! Probably more of a raver — free parties, squat parties.

What was the best party you can remember going to when you first started raving?

Probably one of the Pendragons in Tyssen Street Studios, although I had some funny nights at Helter Skelter in Milton Keynes listening to gabba. Also some killer free parties out and about in the southern countryside.

Can you remember the first time you went out raving?

No! It was a long time ago! Probably at a free party in Hampshire I think. I’ve had many good memorable first parties.

What was the first style you played out?

Mainly hard trance, a bit of hard house and a bit of techno.

So your sound has changed a lot over the last couple of years then?!

Yes — a lot! I’m now playing psychedelic! I’ve always been into psychedelic, the first sort of psy when growing up was the old goa stuff, but now I love the Full on style that has progressed. It has made that hight tech psy sound more accessable to the clubbers.

How would you describe your sound now?

I mainly play full on uplifting party psy trance. If you look at the latest Antiworld booklet, you’ll see… “Monsternastic Uberdelic Mind Melting Full Power Avin’ It Psychedelic Nitro Injected Foot Stomping Trance!” That sums it up perfectly!

Can you list your favourite tracks of all time?

Not really! I’ve got too many tracks I like from all styles of music!

Of course there’s some classic dance tracks that really bring back fond memories:

Poison - The Prodigy
London Acid City - Lochi
Wierdo — ‘Carva Pelignosa’
Hallucinogen — ‘Gamma’

But there’s lots of new stuff I really like too…

You now work for Antiworld. How did you get involved?

I used to play for a night called Technosis in the south. They did a gig at the Fridge once, and I played a set directly before E303, who happened to be the promoter for Antiworld. I started to work a bit for the promotional side of things and became good friends with all the crew. I have made a lot of amazing friendships in this every growing organisation and am proud now to be a part of it.

How long ago was that?

I can’t remember exactly, 2000/2001 some time. I’ve still got the flyer somewhere but my memory’s pretty shit!

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

Playing with artists like Infected Mushroom and Astrix at venues like The Coronet, Brixton Academy and the Fridge. Playing abroad — I got to travel to Sweden, Italy recently and am looking forward to heading to Brazil next year. Its always so good playing headlining sets at gigs I grew up with, like Logic and now Pendragon this Friday! Playing back to back with people like Kristian, Simo etc.

What goals do you have for 2007 and beyond?

Definitely going to get my arse over to Brazil. I have been already been offered the opportunities once I’m there. I’ve just got to get myself out there first. Japan is another spot I’d love to visit.

You’ve just played last set at the sell out Infecting the UK party. How was it?

I had fun, I always try and have fun on stage, the music just brings it out, haha. It’s a privilege to play the closing set at such a massive night, all seemed to go down well. The party was packed and had that awesome vibe u get at the infected parties.

This Friday you’re playing at Pendragon. Are you looking forward to it?

Pendragon’s a big part of my clubbing chilldhood and am looking forward a lot to gracing the infamous Celtic decks!

You must be excited then?

Yeah! I grew up going to every Pendragon for four years. I think Mark and Kate have worked so hard over the years and it’s such a privilege to play for them at last. I’ve played at the Fridge before for Antiworld and Logic and it’s good to see Pendragon back and going strong after 15 years or so! It’s good to see them progressing forward and putting some of my high tech style psy trance on.

You’re known for your crazy persona on stage, which has included a rabbit mask, a mannequin doll, various forms of eye liner, fancy dress and a green mohican. What surprises do you have for fans on Friday?

I’m not sure yet! I need to get my hair cut again… I was going to wear a wedding dress… but my friend has lost the wedding dress. Maybe a bit of fancy dress, lets see how the music and night takes me.

So you reckon a dj should be entertaining then?

Yes I think so! The crowd always seem to be looking up at the dj, some who is into the music and avin it is much more exciting to watch.

What’s your current top 10?

The Commercial Hippies — ‘3 Star Hotel’ (Nano)
Domestic vs X-Noize — Non Human (Hommega)
Lux vs Hypnotic — ‘Confused Celebrium’ (Mandala)
Power Source — ‘Vorlun’ ( Ultravoice Rmx ) (Compact)
Frequlizer vs SoS — ‘High Tech Introduce’ (Point Zero)
M-Theory vs Broken Toy — ‘9am’ (UNR)
Bliss vs Maximus — ‘Unparatamised Feature’ (24/7)
Krunch — ‘Unknown’ (UNR)
Dejavoo — ‘Screaming People’ (UNR)
Astrix — ‘Incoming’ (UNR)

Where would like to play the most?

The House of Commons or a killer squat party at No 10. Failing that the great pyramids in Egypt would be a pretty awesome venue.

Do you ever hope to get into production?

This is my next step and I’m going to start to concentrate a lot more on this. I should be working with good friend and Pointzero/Roots promoter Metaphase in the studio very soon. I have some good ideas and stuff I would like to get down professionally.

You’re also playing at the Roots afterparty at the Fridge this Sunday. Do you play a different kind of set at an afterparty? How would you describe a Roots party to uninitiated readers?

Roots is one of these brilliant slightly smaller nights in London which has progressed so well recently. The vibe and music quality is top stuff and everyone has so much fun, I think for an afterparty the style depends on how hardcore the remaining clubbers are. I think I’ll take a selection of morning style and full on and see what happens.

You’re involved in the promotion of the Antiworld 070707 festival, this must be an amazing project to work on?! What can you tell HF readers about the festival so far and why should they buy early bird tickets asap?

Oh yeaaaaaaaahhhh. This is such an amazing project in the making and it’s looking really really exciting. Enrico, Ross and the whole team behind this are working so hard to put on a show that will amaze party people from all over the globe. It’s gonna have such a huge line-up of not just psy, but massive techno , house , electro, hard trance etc. The venue is stunning and the production quality is gonna blow people away.

I can’t say too much now, but what is planned is really really really gonna be something very special. Tickets now are cheap and with a world-wide promotion going on I can say that its going to sell sooo many tickets here and abroad… so the earlier the better! 070707 is the date to remember!!

See ya on the trancefloors guys!! SAFE AS…
