The results for the 2006 HarderFaster Awards are in!
Written by HarderFaster on 07-02-07 12:03 (96262 views) (80 comments)
This year voting was spread thinly, or was it your choices had expanded? Maybe your tastes have broadened or was it you just can’t agree with each other on anything? Whatever it was, the votes cast brought in many wonderful and weird selections, surprisingly enough from many parts of the world.

Of course there was the ubiquitous dose of the hard stuff, but it was clear to us that some of you have gone soft in your old age with strong showings for the house, breaks and trance scene across all the poll sections.

We’d also like to thank those who voted for Club Jef as the best after party, White Label as the best label, Dunno as the best party, My House as the best new venue and Someone Else as the best review writer. Your thoughts were very valuable to us.

Before we come to our winners — who by the way come highly commended by yourselves — it should be to the other notables that we say well done and good luck for next year. We’ve included these significant others for your curiosity and interest.

In every category though there were strong winners — people, clubs and venues that made you sit up and take notice over the past year. So now if you can please put your hands together for them (and remember to buy them a drink when you see them next) we present the Harderfaster Annual Poll 2006 winners!

Sami gets his Norq!s out: let the birthday shenanigens begin!
Written by Tara on 02-02-07 03:25 (6782 views) (15 comments)
This Saturday Norq! returns for a special one-off party to celebrate Voodoobass and Andy Harkin’s birthdays, which means it’s that time of year... yes it’s Norq!’s birthday! To celebrate Norq! and Marbles present Scrambled!! with the guys having booked some of their favourite names from the breaks, house and d&b scenes, including Merka (interviewed in the latest DJmag), Steve Lee, Paul Louth, Steelo and the mysterious Red Eel, playing a classics set from the golden age of d&b, as well as Andy Harkin and Sami himself. It’s exactly a year to the day since Voodoobass was last interviewed on HF. In that time a lot has happened, but what’s really been going on in Norq!land over the last 12 months? [Full Story]

Clubbing with a conscience at The Synergy Project
Written by Adam Symbiosis on 31-01-07 21:32 (10121 views) (2 comments)
“People have been asking if they can pay more to make sure they get in because they’ve come all the way from Germany.” How many clubs can boast that? But then again The Synergy Project isn’t just any club. Fusing music with more worthwhile pursuits, the Project is one of the most diverse promotions on the scene at the moment. And I was about to learn all about it over a few warming coffees in the heart of Camden Lock. [Full Story]

The return of The Colosseum
Written by benz on 31-01-07 21:30 (9688 views) (21 comments)
A long time veteran of the so-called Vauxhall Triangle, Club Colosseum (or The Colosseum as it’s known to some) is a venue that was once frequently graced by the hard house-loving public. Nowadays it’s barely known by the younger generation, and those who used to go complained vehemently about the poor state of the venue. However, the club has been undergoing extensive refurbishment recently, transforming it from a worn-out, second rate venue to one that is suitably up to date with modern standards, and that won’t fail to impress in the hands of the right promoters. Frantic & Nu Religion are taking the place by the reigns on February 10th for Timeless Romance, and the hard dance scene awaits with baited breath to see what the results will be. We took a look around the venue with manager Hulusi Halil. [Full Story]

The beginner’s guide to demo production
Written by Steve Milton on 30-01-07 00:06 (6128 views) (11 comments)
With limited bookings and lots of competition, it can be a pretty daunting task for a new DJ to break into the industry and play out regularly. There are obviously many things to be taken into consideration, all vitally important and some out of your control. However, the one thing that remains a constant is the production of a demo to showcase your abilities and musical style. How you go about producing this advert for yourself has been a topic for discussion on the boards for a long time and while there’s no definitive answer, there are without doubt elements that need to be taken into consideration and acted on accordingly. What I’m going to try and do here is highlight these and offer some pointers which will help the up and coming to maybe produce something that will make a potential listener/promoter take notice. Also at this juncture I’d like to point out that the information contained in this article is the amalgamation of opinions gained from various sources throughout the industry and not just my own experience. Party Proactive preview with Adam Newman
Written by Proactive on 29-01-07 09:19 (5123 views) (11 comments)
I’m thinking techno, I’m thinking hard dance, mmm, make that world-class hard dance. I’m thinking drums, I’m thinking LIVE, I’m thinking industrial! I’m thinking glam, fresh, and rock and roll baby. So who exactly am I thinking of? Well, if I reveal he was half of the legendary LAB4 (R.I.P.) you’d be in no doubt I am, of course, talking about the magnificent Adam Newman. New man, new times, new music? Having taken a bow at the final LAB4 curtain, Adam is continuing his musical rampage solo — and the world had better watch out! Speaking to Party Proactive in the build up to his back to bump set with the delectable *Ting*, we dig deep on his solo DJ career, forthcoming productions and life before and since the end of the 13 year reign of fame that was LAB4. And if you can’t wait until Party Proactive on Saturday 24 March, Adam is in town this Saturday to play the techno stage at Antiworld’s last official International Indoor Festival at Seone... Fergilcious: PunchFunk & Excentrik take over The Key
Written by e99 on 29-01-07 02:02 (6142 views) (11 comments)
A product of hard house superclubs like Trade, Sundissential and Frantic, Robert Ferguson went from king of bounce to Radio1 superstar in an amazingly short space of time, following his inception into the dance music community under the watchful eye of Tony De Vit. Now more known for his techno and electro shenanigans, Fergie has entered 2007 with a new record label, a new London residency, and a schedule free from the weekly fixture of his Radio1 show — which he finished in the second half of last year. He’s a bit of musical chameleon, having taken several musical directions over the years, ensuring that his sound never gets stale. He’s currently plumbing for meaty electro — think German producers like Sven Vath and Oliver Huntemann — essentially gritty grooves for dark rooms. [Full Story]

Hard Dance Awards preview: meet the regional heroes who keep the UK pumping!
Written by Ed Real on 25-01-07 00:31 (14447 views) (14 comments)
Although the Hard Dance Awards have been held in London for the last couple of years, the awards is totally committed to showcasing and celebrating the scene all over the UK and beyond. Every weekend, promoters and DJs around the country hold events that keep the hard dance movement alive and kicking in their area and without them it'd be a smaller and a much less interesting business.

For the first time in the history of the awards, venue size allows us to doff our caps in the direction of those players around the UK whose hard work and commitment through the ups and downs make hard dance one of the most comprehensive and far reaching underground dance communities on the planet. Regional heroes we salute you!

El Greko returns to the Fridge for The Gathering Residents’ Showcase
Written by Tara on 24-01-07 23:08 (5237 views) (14 comments)
Very few DJs are skilled and dedicated enough to make it onto the pro circuit, let alone stay there for seven years. Gathering resident El Greko not only did just that before retiring, but then after a five year break made an impressive comeback, cemented by him winning the Frantic & HarderFaster DJ Competition in 2003, which led to some impressive gigs at MOS, Heaven, The Fridge and Camden Palace.

He’s back in town this weekend to play at The Gathering Residents’ Showcase at The Fridge, with a set at Classics of the Decade to follow on Saturday 3 February. But what has he been doing all this time? We decided it was definitely time Aki Nicholas aka El Greko was back under the spotlight for another round.
