Shy Brothers - the new heroes of tech-trance

Reported by getinpr / Submitted 17-04-07 10:32

The Shy Brothers are Canadians Mike and Benjamin Shir who have been the driving force behind the Vancouver club scene for some years now, as producers, DJs and promoters. They run some of the biggest dance events in Canada such as the International Music Festival, Insomnia and Dooms Night. These attract some of the most high profile DJs on the tougher side of dance to make the long plane journey to the west of Canada including Mauro Picotto, Marco V, Eddie Halliwell, Anne Savage, Blank & Jones and Scot Project and draw crowds of up to 7,000.

As producers they are starting to make waves on the UK and European hard dance scene with their remixes and own productions. Their latest single Human Design features an utterly infectious male vocal and a massive Scot Project remix that has seen support from most of the major players in hard dance such as Lisa Lashes, Anne Savage, Alex Kidd, Kutski, Organ Donors and Phil York. It has already been licensed to several compilations worldwide and had rave reviews in the UK dance press.

As DJs they break the mould of the Canadian dance scene, mainly known for its progressive and minimal sounds, playing a blend of electro edged tech trance. This year sees their biggest gig yet as they play the Continental stage at Dance Valley alongside Christopher Lawrence, Judge Jules and John ‘00’ Fleming and will be the start of a worldwide tour.

With their next release Feeling Like on the way, featuring a remix from Stoneface & Terminal, the Shy Brothers are a name to watch out for in 2007. Harderfaster spoke to them about life in Canada and their plans for the coming year.

Firstly, congratulations on the release of your new single Human Design are you pleased with the reactions it has got over here in Europe?

Yes, our new singles Human Design and Midnight Funk have done extremely well in Europe and the rest of the world and thanks to the people that support us!

Describe your sound to us.

Our sound at the moment is a mix of Electro/Tech/Trance, with differently influenced vocals from Rock to Classic.

You have moved around a lot in your lives, how did you come to settle in Canada?

Moving to Canada was a decision we made with our family 8 years ago, and we can’t complain as Canada is the most beautiful place on earth!

Were you involved with dance music from an early age?

Yes, whether promoting our shows, DJing or producing it was always related to dance music.

What drew you to the tough tech-trance sound? Did growing up in Germany influence your tastes?

Hmmm, we are influenced by many things, growing up in Europe was definitely a major part. We like the aggressive funkiness of tech-trance and it’s a good mix of all different styles we enjoy.

How is the club scene in Canada?

The club scene in Canada is very strong but limited to house, progressive and more minimal sounds. However, the rave scene with its massive shows and venues showcases mostly harder party music!

You organise massive events in Vancouver such as Dooms Night and the International Music Festival. Tell us a bit more about them.

Well, we run our company Solid Entertainment & Solid Records based in Vancouver, where we promote some of North America’s biggest indoor festivals.

You attract big name guest DJs to these events, who has been your favourite to play alongside?

Hehe this is a trick question. All of them! But some more than others.

Looking ahead to 2007, what releases do you have planned?

2007 will be our busiest year yet, with many releases and remixes planned. Up next, we have our single Feeling Like which is to hit stores at the end of June 07 including a Stoneface & Terminal Remix. As well, we have planned remixes for Euphonic Records & F&W Records, which will be out in 2007.

You’re playing Dance Valley alongside Christopher Lawrence and Judge Jules. That must be a massive event for you.

Yes, it’s a great honour to play at Dance Valley along side great names like them. It’s the event that kicks off for our European tour this summer. We plan to hit clubs & festivals all over the UK, Holland, Spain (Ibiza), Poland and Germany in July and August.

Are you looking to do any more touring in Europe and the rest of the world?

Well, we are on the road this summer all over Europe and most likely heading to Australia in November / December for the first time.

What can a clubber expect from a Shy Brothers set?

Well a clubber can expect to buy new shoes the next day! (Hehe) Our style is so diverse at the moment; we play anything from Tech House to Techno and Tech-Trance depending on the event and venue. Anything that’s funky, dirty & pumping you can expect from us - after all it’s called dance music!

Do you have any sibling rivalry behind the decks, for example one of you thinking the time is right for a bit of Jochen Miller with the other going no what the crowd needs now is some Scooter?!

Oh boy, the questions are getting better and better. There is never a right time for Scooter. Honestly most of the time it’s the energy of the dance floor that guides our track list, it’s an energy that keeps going back and forth between the DJ and the crowd. We usually have a good idea what the crowd is asking for and we deliver.

How does your chemistry work in the studio and what sort of set up do you have?

We have our disputes, but for the most part we agree. If the idea is right you just feel it. Our studio setup includes a Mac G5 & PC, Logic, Pro Tools HD3 Accel system, 192 IO, Avalon, Apache, Virus C, JP 8080, Q-Rack, Roland XR and a lot of software.

Which producers do you draw most inspiration from at the moment?

It’s not so much the producers but the style of music that inspires us. We enjoy and get inspired from all different types of music from Classical, Rock, Electronica and everything in-between.

You run your own record label, DJ, produce, run an events agency, do you find anything else to do away from dance music?

We enjoy staying active and spending quality time with friends and family, and if we get a chance we try to rest.

Thanks for your time guys!
