PUSH preview with Matt Priest

This weekend sees the launch of a very different clubbing event from the promoters of HeatUK and South West Four. Their new event PUSH — a fortnightly Sunday session — starts at The White House, with some killer line-ups and a chance for unknown DJs to play alongside the more established stars of the house world. One of the partners behind this event is former Radio One head of dance Matt Priest — responsible for signing Fergie, Eddie Halliwell, Nic Fanciulli and many others to Europe’s biggest radio station. He speaks to Heat Events promoter Damian Gelle in an exclusive interview about Radio 1, Bob Geldof and the Sunday sessions called PUSH.
Matt, for the clubbers out there on Harderfaster that don’t know you — tell us a little bit about yourself and how you first became associated with dance music?
MP: I was eighteen in 1988 and lived in Brighton and cut my clubbing teeth at the Zap club, Carl Cox and Chris Coco’s night, the Tonka sound system, Danny Rampling and Rad Rice, Shoreham Power station raves and things like the early illegal Tribal Gathering parties, I didn’t stand a chance really. Hook line and sinker and have been ever since.
What was your first job at Radio 1? Tell us a little bit about climbing the food chain at the BBC?
MP: I worked for the Mean Fiddler beforehand, where we did the legal Tribal Gathering parties amongst other things. I started in the marketing department, moved on to run all the live music and ended up as head of dance, looking after all the dance radio shows, Pete, Fergie, Jules etc and all the dance events, Ibiza Miami and Essential Mix nights.
So, being the events co-ordinator of a pretty serious company like that I suppose you’ve had to look after some pretty scary festivals which would make South West Four look like the first HeatUK backyard party, am I right?
MP: I’ve done some massive events from Notting Hill Carnival to Glastonbury, Berlin Love Parade to the Leeds Love Parade which I brought to Radio 1, 275,000 people in Roundhay Park in Leeds, every club brand had a float, the best day of my clubbing life. SW4 was my first event for a long time without Radio 1, it was incredibly satisfying watching it sell out after so much hard work.
And now you’re working for Mr Geldof at Ten Alps events, tell us how you came to leave Radio 1.
MP: Ten years is a long time and I wanted new challenges and to broaden a little. Thankfully I’m still heavily involved in dance with things like PUSH and SW4 but I’m also doing other stuff too.

Just to put the record straight does Bob show for work on a Monday?
MP: He’s a little busy with world poverty, we don’t tend to see that much of him!
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. The reason we’ve got you on the HarderFaster show is to sample thoughts from a different kind of guest who is more orientated towards house music than hard dance. Now it’s no secret you are a complete house head. Who does Matt Priest idolise behind the decks?
MP: My hero has always been Danny Rampling, which is why I was thrilled to have him play his last outdoor set at SW4. The big guns — Eric Morillo, Pete Tong, Carl Cox. New talent — Nic Fanciulli, Eddie Halliwell, Desyn Masillo and the Eric and Ernie of dance, the Trophy Twins.
Now I’ve only properly met you probably 7 months ago when you helped with some bits on South West Four — tell me about the idea for the PUSH Sunday session and how it came about.
MP: It’s basically for people who should know better. Sunday is a school night, we all have work the next day, you should be watching Heartbeat and getting an early night. But some of us can’t help ourselves. It will be a proper filthy house session with many sickies thrown the next day. Luckily it’s work for me so I can justify the morning off!
Tell the viewers out there some more about this brand-spanking new PUSH brand which commences this Sunday afternoon at the White House?
MP: It’s got a killer line up (Rocky N Diesel from X-Press 2, Shapeshifters, MYNC project and Krafty Kuts all headline the first 4 weeks), The White House itself is a great venue, and the drinks are at Sunday prices, absolute a perfect way to round off your weekend.

I’ve heard you play, will you be DJ-ing your own event? And if so, what slot would you like to play and what could we expect to hear?
MP: Too right, nothing but house and only when people are drunk so they don’t see the cracks in my armour!
I’m going to need a demo first I’m afraid! For the up and comers out there what characteristic do you see shine from the big name DJs who have made it today? For instance, it’s a well known fact that Jules (the Judge) is one of the hardest working jocks out there. Are there any lazy bastards earning big money?
MP: Not any more. In this day and age if you don’t give value to money to promoters and punters alike, you ain’t coming back.
There’s always someone that does these HarderFaster interviews that always delivers the death blow by asking whether dance music is dead? Well, I’m not even going to support that going on the reaction to this Sunday… so doing a complete change of topic — is it true you are going to be a Dad soon?
MP: You bet, can’t wait!
