Innovate preview: Jurrane and why it was bound to happen

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 02-03-06 23:36

The future is trance. Well it is according to one of its freshest stars, Jurrane. Known to his mother as Jim Voute, the classically trained musician doesn’t just dazzle behind the decks, but he’s also one half of the brains behind the feisty London trance party Boundless which he runs with fellow spinner Paul Mayes.

Beginning his trance career as a producer, it wasn’t until 2002 that he played to his first audience, but his distinctive energetic style quickly caught the ears of promoters so after a few months he was strutting his stuff at events such as Heat, Addiction, Knowwhere and even bagging himself a gig at Vaccine at The Gallery. Playing out soon whetted his appetite for promoting, which in turn led to the birth of Boundless — a night which promised energetic trance from enthusiastic and talented new DJs. Eighteen months on the successful Boundless has recently had to say goodbye to its spiritual home, The Soundshaft (next to Heaven) after plans were made to make it in to a bar (how rude?!)

Undeterred Boundless lives on, and as such will be taking over the second room at hard house superpower Innovate. We welcome Jurrane in his second interview for HarderFaster and find out why he’s full of beans!

For those that don’t know, what is Boundless and why did you decide to start it?

Boundless is a trance party specifically designed to showcase up-and-coming talent within the scene, and to give new and emerging DJs the chance to play alongside the more established names. When I go out clubbing, one of the things I enjoy most is to go out and be impressed by DJs I’ve never heard of before and I’ve tried to apply this to the parties we promote. We’re taking a slightly more long-term view of the genre, and are trying to help develop the names of tomorrow and not just showcase the stars of today. We’re celebrating our 1st anniversary on 18th March by teaming up with Innovate for what’s sure to be one hell of a party!

What is your role within Boundless and who else is part of the team?

I’m co-promoter of the party along with friend and business partner Paul Mayes and we’re also the two resident DJs. We’re helped by our respective (and very supportive) partners/wives and a whole host of friends to whom we’re eternally grateful — you know who you are!

What makes Boundless different from other trance parties?

I think it’s our dedication to showcasing new talent. As far as we know, we’re the only party to offer a permanent discounted entry rate to anyone who sends or gives us a demo: if you submit a demo CD to us, you get discounted entry for life and not just one party. We’re extremely careful to ensure that we book at least one new demoist for each party, with the specific intention of helping them showcase themselves within the scene. We’re always looking for new DJs so if you’re interested, drop us an email as boundlessuk@btinternet.com

Why did you decide to team up with Innovate for their March party?

Well, Innovate were kind enough to invite us so we could hardly say no! Seriously, I think part of the reason why Innovate were keen for us to host the second room for their March event is that just like Innovate, we’re trying to be as forward-thinking as we can and offer something a little different to some of the other parties out there. I believe the two brands compliment each other really well and think March’s event is going to be an absolute stormer.

What can we expect from the Boundless room at Innovate?

A night of the very finest in trance music from some of the best up-and-coming DJs the scene has to offer! Our DJ lineup on the night represents some of the leading names in London’s trance scene with Twisted resident K.A.R.L., Trance Generation star Ehren Stowers and promising newcomer Greg Blaquiere all playing alongside Paul and myself. We’re also known for having a very loyal, friendly crowd, and we take pride in the quality of our decoration and lighting. Our regulars will be pleased to know we’re bringing the renowned Boundless Laser (™) to the Fridge too!

What are your future plans for the party?

Our intention has always been to hold occasional rather than frequent parties as we like the idea of keeping them special and giving people something to look forward to. As well as the event with Innovate, we’ve some exciting plans for 2006 – including a move away from the Soundshaft, our original venue — so watch this space!

Trance often gets a lot of stick from other people, often cited as fluffy and girlie. What’s your thoughts on this?

I genuinely haven’t heard that particular criticism before! To be honest, as a DJ, promoter and producer who lives, sleeps and breathes trance music, I’m not trying to convert those who don’t ‘get’ the music: I’m far more concerned about pleasing the ones who do.

Tell us a bit about your work outside Boundless as a DJ.

I’m lucky enough to DJ very regularly on the London trance scene and have made recent appearances for Addiction, Edensounds, Heat, Knowwhere, Menthol, One, Outcome, Planet Angel and Twisted, amongst others. As well as the residency at Boundless, I’m also resident trance DJ for Trancendance and play for them on a monthly basis. Upcoming appearances include bookings for Spangulation, Tidy Euphoria, Zoology and a very special closing set at Vaccine @ The Gallery where I’ll be playing alongside some of the biggest names in the business including PVD, Judge Jules, John Askew and Cosmic Gate!

How would you describe your musical style?

I love the more pumping, energetic, driving side of trance — anything with a really infectious groove and a bit of bounce is fine by me! Someone once described it as ‘high-octane’ which I quite like: it sort of implies lots of power and feeling without being too hard or full-on.

What can clubbers expect from a typical Jurrane DJ set?

Lots of drive and energy! As a musician, I’m a stickler for harmonic mixing; because trance is such a melody-driven style, a nasty key clash can often sound as bad as a beatmatching trainwreck, so my sets are always key mixed wherever possible. Obviously it depends what time I’ve been booked to play but generally my sets feature lots of pumping, energetic, feelgood music designed to put smiles on faces and to get feet moving.

What producers and/or labels are doing it for you at the moment?

Recent productions by Ian Betts, Mike Koglin, Sean Tyas and DJ Kristoff have all blown me away and I’m a massive fan of John O’Callaghan whom I think has an incredibly bright future ahead of him as a producer. Label-wise, I’d say that Discover are my favourite label at the moment and recent stuff on Noys, Six:Thirty, Afterglow and Flux Delux has also been awesome.

Are you a producer as well or do you just DJ?

I actually started life in dance music as a producer before learning to DJ a little later. I’m a classically-trained musician, having had piano lessons from a very early age and I continued to study music up to college level. I run a hardware-based studio from home and have several productions in the works — you can find out more by visiting my website: www.jurrane.com

You’re also founder of London trance label Magic Beans Records. Tell us a bit about that.

Magic Beans Records was started in 2004 by three partners and myself, and we co-own the label. Our first couple of releases did really well and were supported by plenty of the bigger names including Judge Jules, Dave Pearce, John Fleming, Johan Gielen, Andy Bagguley, Marc West, John O’Bir and Adam White, and tracks from the label have also been featured on Radio 1, ID&T Radio and Ministry Of Sound. We’re relaunching this year as a digital-only label and have a busy release schedule planned, including my new track ‘Flame Of The North’ and a remix co-produced by Dan Stopani and myself of Sly One’s beautiful tune ‘Twilight’.

What are your plans for 2006 and beyond?

Well, Magic Beans Records and Boundless are both certainly keeping me very busy, and the first quarter of the year is shaping up to be a very hectic period for DJ bookings. Looking ahead slightly longer-term, I’m just happy to keep on playing regularly as a DJ and to continue making tracks as a producer, and if the big breaks come then it’s just a bonus. I love what I’m doing and honestly wouldn’t swap it for anything else in the world.

What’s the most boundless thing you’ve ever done?

I don’t know about “ever done”, but of the stuff that’s printable, a recent all-day completion of London’s Circle Line Pub Crawl probably ranks up there. 26 stations, 26 pubs in 12 hours was more than enough for me (I’m not a particularly big drinker) although we even managed a few extra pints in the final pub just before midnight. Needless to say, I wasn’t a pretty sight the next day…
