So. You’ve got one of the biggest venues in London, certainly one of the most glamorous. You have a host of the UK’s most awe-inspiring DJs and producers, leading lights when it comes to pushing the harder sound forward. The crowd are at fever pitch. Phil Reynolds is doing his debut live set, going head to head with MDA & Spherical. Jennie Rix is on the mic. But wtf??? Some bloke with a cello has just turned up on stage! Are you kidding us?
Certainly not party people. Welcome to the world of Innovate and Logic, where the boundaries of music are pushed back further than any other night the capital and probably the country has to offer. Tonight we give you a legend in the making, one of the hottest production names currently hitting the circuit and a man whose name will be on everyone’s lips after this performance. And yes, you were right the first time, that was definitely a cello in between his legs. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we give you SQ.
You’re playing at Innovate Meets Logic at the Shepherds Bush Empire on Saturday April 21st. What have you got planned for your show?
Yes, and what a phat lineup! It’s a real honour to grace the stage with the A list of hard dance! The gig is cloaked in secrecy, but you can certainly expect the electric cello to play a part.
How did your involvement with the night come about?
After James Jaye signed my track Hypnotising to Oblivion Recordings, then signed Deja Vu (the follow up) as well, I approached them for advice about my PA. James and Shaf have been incredibly helpful in setting up this three way, which obviously adds to MDA & Spherical's absolutely awesome live show, but also gives me an incredibly high profile debut to then follow on from with my PA. I have tons of respect for Matt and Mark! They’re great producers and its been a pleasure to work with them. I’m also looking forward to hearing Jen's vocals on the big stage at the Shepherds Bush Empire. Her vocals on the Timeless PA were spotless and she's rapidly establishing herself as the number one vocalist in hard dance so it's great to be working with her as well! Phil Reynolds is one of the pioneers of hard trance in the UK and has been rocking dance floors worldwide for years now. The term legend is used too frequently but in Phil's case it's extremely apt. To be part of his first live show is something very special indeed and I can't wait to get up there on stage.
The Empire Strikes Back is the theme – are you a big fan of Star Wars? Who’s your favourite character? Were you particularly impressed with the latest trilogy, or does sci-fi not particularly float your boat?
Han Solo FTW! The original films piss all over the new ones, without a doubt.
We’ve heard rumours of a Nick Sentience / MDA & Spherical remix of the film’s theme tune. Will you be performing anything themed on the night? Or possibly wearing Princess Leia hari buns on stage?
I'm sure John Williams will be proud (lol) but no, not the hair, maybe a nice gold bikini though.
Tell us about your background in classical music.
I started playing the cello, like all good musicians, because I was shit at everything else. I went to the Royal College of Music and honed my skills. Since then I’ve done everything from pop sessions with top 40 acts, to Elton John's birthday and playing for the Queen. I mainly play with the Royal Philharmonic and BBC Orchestras but have started playing in musicals in the West End, namely the Lion King and Wicked.
What on earth makes a classically trained cellist turn to hard trance?
It was partly Andy, a mate at college, who got me going to Peach in the glory days. Then Escape from Samsara and the passion grew from there.
What do your friends in the world of classical music think of your ‘other life’? Have any of them expressed an interest in following you through?
They are all too anal about their hearing, but they back me and come to support me when they can. A few of my mates are going commercial with Sony, but I’m too hardcore for them. They will be laughing at me in their sunseekers though!
How much was being asked to remix K90’s Red Snapper a turning point for you in so far as other producers and big names having access to your work?
It was an absolutely massive opportunity! Mark is a top bloke and gave me that unique chance to remix my all time favourite anthem. It's been a major boost in my career, actually getting big DJs playing my tunes! I've recently been in the studio with Mark (Doggett AKA K90 – Ed), getting my remix of Ghost in the Machine (forthcoming on Dataless) tip top. He is a legend and in those 8 hours, I learnt more than I have in a year!
Red Snapper is obviously one of the most revered hard trance tunes of all time – how did you approach your remix and were you nervous?
Couldn't top the original, so I put a massive warp bass in it and made it as 'having it' as possible. Kevin Energy then supported it hard and it made its way onto the Elevate album along with Karma, which was awesome!
Were changes to the track completely up to you?
He really liked it but asked me to change a few things to make it extra special. That’s where experience comes in. He is a legend!
You’ve had massive support for your tracks from the likes of Kevin Energy, Billy Daniel Bunter, Trevor McLachlan, K90, Phil Reynolds, Steve Blake, Kutski etc. What’s it like to get the backing of so many major artists in such a short space of time?
Beyond my wildest dreams. I owe a lot to Kutski for dropping Karma on Radio 1, and Kev and the Impact boys for their continued support! James and Shaf at Oblivion and Andy and Olly at Addiction are helping to shape my PA and career as a producer. While to have John 00 Fleming support my new track with Tripezium, Lament, was awesome! Finally I’m really excited about my collaboration with Jason Cortez, which is going really well! Big ups to all of ya, THAFE!
You’ve been in the studio working with K90, Micky Fallout and Trevor McLachlan. How does your classical training translate through to modern dance music production?
Basically, I can write really cool riffs and can hear when something sounds crap.
What is it about you that’s making you so hot with fellow producers right now?
The fact that I’m just absolutely awesome! And my modesty. Seriously though, it's just nice to be getting recognition from the guys I have looked up to since I got into hard dance. It makes everything all the more worthwhile.
Trance, possibly more than any other form of dance music, is full of soaring euphoric melodies and breakdowns. Is this what attracts you to it over other genres?
Yeah, it’s all about the riffs, though I love Tinrib's 303's and high pass sweeps. You’ll see that reflected in some of my tunes. I try to be as diverse as possible, that’s why I've use anything from gorecki, to the Lion King, to actual Buddhist chant in Karma (he's talking about flowers apparently).
What other genres appeal to you musically and why?
Jazz and P.Funk, old school hip hop. Basically anything. You should never just write off a genre, because there will always be a gem somewhere, (oh, except gabba)
In January you were asked to remix the Pet Shop Boys for an exhibition about them at the National Portrait Gallery. How did that come about?
I played some of my tunes to someone whilst on tour in Germany with the Royal Philharmonic. He loved it and gave me the opportunity at the gallery, as he runs the music there. It was a cool experience.
What tunes did you remix and what did you do to them?
Oh loads. I just tried to make them sound good. One track had an 80 year old man stomping his feet, it was a hard techno version of Sodom and Gomorah. Priceless!
Did you get to meet the Boys in person? What did they think of your work?
Unfortunately I was working when I had the opportunity, but they loved the promo I sent.
What do your live performances consist of?
Massive tunes, phat euphoric riffs, electric cello, driving basslines, a wee bit of classical, and if you're lucky, live percussion and instrumentalists from top London orchestras.
What made you decide to take your cello into the club?
It was the next step, but I had to wait for the right time. I thank Shaf and James for their guidance!
Obviously with it being an electric cello you must have loads of special effects that come with it. What kind of musical stunts can you pull off with it that you couldn’t with a regular cello?
The fact that it can sound like anything is pretty cool!
Do you play any other instruments?
A bit of piano, I used to jam with Guy the bass player from Coldplay at school, so I always wanted to play that, just never got round to it.
If you could work with any other producer, who would it be and why?
After K90, it would have to be Nick Sentience and the Edison Factor. For pure production quality they are the dons! Plus I hope to be back in the Oblivion studios with MDA & Spherical again this year. Those two really are at the top their game.
Who is your favourite classical composer and why?
Rachmaninoff for writing phat piano riffs (lol).
Who are your musical heroes?
Brian Wilson, David Bowie, ELO, The Killers, James Lawson...the list goes on.
What piece of classical music really gets you going and why?
The Schumann cello concerto is fucking amazing. Listen to Steven Isserlis play it, pure class.
Do you think you could remix an entire piece of classical music, say Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and successfully bring it to the dance floor with a live electronic orchestra?
NO!!! And if anyone hears me say it, shoot me.
Could you see yourself leaving the classical arena in pursuit of dance music or will you always want to combine the two in your career?
Combining the two would be fantastic. Let’s see where my PA takes me.
What’s next for you this year?
Lots more tunes! My remixes for Wid and Ben, Kevin Energy (two tunes on the new Elevate album), along my Addiction EP and remix seeing the light of day! There’s my follow up to Hypnotising on Oblivion, Deja Vu which I'm very proud of and arguably my best production to date. It's been a busy year already and things don't look to be letting up, which is all good!

Where would you like to see yourself in the next five years?
Somewhere nice like Italy, with lots of children, (got one and another on the way!).
People like William Orbit and Paul Oakenfold have made an extremely successful transition from dance music to working on film scores. You’ve already recorded scores for films like the Da Vinci Code. Is this an area that you’d like to delve further into?
Maybe one day, although a few of my friends do this, it's very cut-throat! The Da Vinci code soundtrack was a real high. 28 cellos! Hardcore!
What do you get up to apart from making and playing music, or with everything that you’re up to do you have very little spare time?
I wake up at 6.30 am every day to do my dance music, so that I can spend as much time as possible with my boy, then go to work, here there and everywhere, so don't really get that much time to do much apart from chill out.
What are your views on other cross over classical artists like Vanessa Mae, El Divo and grandma’s favourite, G4?
Well funnily enough, my nan loves G4 so when I did a concert with them, I took her to meet them. Lovely young boys! Good on them, my mates in Eclipse (a boy band string quartet) are doing well. You might even catch them in my PA in the future.
The only pictures I’ve ever actually seen of you are with your hood up! What do you look like?
A cross between Jabba the Hut and Hans Solo. Come along on the 21st and see, although don't get your hopes up. Thank god my boy got his mother's looks!
If you could go to dinner with five people, living or dead, who would they be and why would you choose them?
Eddie Murphy for the entertainment; Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra for the background music; Al Pacino to just look cool; and Keith Richards for the rest of the night, although I might hide any urns that are lying around.

I'll text you when I get to Heaven.

Does politics interest you?
No, although I'm sure I'm supposed to say yes, so yes.
You have £1 million. You have to give it away to charity. Who would you give it to and why?
Baby Milk Action, as they are still struggling to fight against big corporations (cough...Nestle...cough) supplying formula to babies, mainly in the developing world, therefore causing thousands of deaths from using contaminated water, when with the right information they could just use their boobs instead! RANT OVER!
Oh and on a side note, I was in studio recording some cello with one of the members of the KLF and yes, they're all mad!
If someone asked you to burn your cello for £100,000, would you?
Yes, I could then buy 5 more then.
Do you think we’ll ever get another completely new kind of instrument that will have a totally new kind of sound? What would you give to be the person who invented it?
Sorry, that question will take some thought, but my 11 year old cousin told me a joke the other day at London zoo, so I'll tell you that instead…

gorgeous Shepherds Bush Empire in London, providing a party of

thinking hard dance and trance music known to mankind, Klingon, Borg
or any other form of intellect that may exist out there, come 6am on

Heading up the main room, Empire 1 is a massive world
exclusive. Innovate resident and London DJ legend Phil Reynolds
makes his debut live performance, something that we know the
collective has been crying out to for. Not only will he be doing this for
the very first time but he’ll also be going up against the fastest rising live
act of the century, MDA & Spherical LIVE.
This will be the ultimate showdown from two of the biggest forces in
British Hard Dance music, so make sure you get your spot at the front
for this one! The show includes a live vocal performance from the
gorgeous Jennie Rix and musical addition by the outstandingly
brilliant SQ.
Don’t know who SQ is? Cop a load of this. A classically trained cellist
who has worked on the scores for the Da Vinci Code (we are not
worthy), he is currently blazing a trail with producers around the world
thanks to his natural ability to construct a to-die-for melody. He and his
electric instrument will be gracing us with his presence and taking you on
a journey to places you never thought you’d visit on a dance floor. Truly,
this is something that has to be seen and heard to be believed but we
guarantee you now, it will be the talking point in the capital for
months to come.
Possibly dressing up in Lieutenant Uhura outfits (you never know with
this lot), it’s the magnificent Nu Energy Collective LIVE, as ever
accompanied by the Green Man. These Logic legends are
one of dance music’s most fired up performers and always bring a
dynamic element to any night they take over. We are absolutely
privileged to bring them to the Shepherd’s Bush Empire stage for
