In 1983, This Mortal Coil, an ever-changing collective of vocalists and producers, released a track called Song To The Siren. It was a cover of a Tim Buckley song. It was sung by Elizabeth Fraser of The Cocteau Twins. She guested on This Mortal Coil's It'll End In Tears album on 4AD. In 2002, Barraka covered the track and delivered a masterful and evocative cover on the mighty Lost Language, home of Tilt, Accadia and Tasadi.
In 2023, the original This Mortal Coil song celebrates its 40th anniversary so I thought I'd revisit Barraka's revision. With mixes from Jean-Phillipe Aviance, Filterheadz and Max Graham, the track affirmed EL-EL's stamp on the haunted world of dark electronic music. While the tribal Jean-Phillipe Dirty South mixes chug along, its the Filterheadz Undercurrent Vocal Mix that intrigued me; with its vocal progressive nature and poise adding a haunting edge to the legendary track. Max Graham does his thing and drops a truly anthemic 11 minute behemoth which finishes the set.
Retrospectively, looking back at the track, the Filterheadz mix is the one to go for with its dark, almost cavernous, poise. The vocals are ethereal and siren-like. There's a somewhat comforting vibe almost in this mix. Max Graham's epic mix is my second favourite mix with Jean-Phillipe's mixes bringing up the rear.
Haunting, epic and well worth revisiting, especially for the Filterheadz mix.
