When Banco de Gaia's ninth album, The 9th Of Nine Hearts, was released, a few singles were launched from it. These were: 91, Le Foucauld, Warp & Weft and the wonderfully exotic The Princess And The Sky Goat. 91 is the one we're featuring as we venture into the time machine and head on back to The 9th's single releases; released roughly around the same time as the album itself.
91 is really an ode to rave's halcyon days and reminds us, if any reminders were needed, that Banco is a dance artist above all else. Remixes come courtesy of Bennun & Healy and Mr. C, former MC of hedonistic indie/dance outfit The Shamen. Still love The Shamen. Anyway...
The dancier of the singles, 91 features the vocals of Sophie Barker, whose album Break The Habit and its remix edition, LSA, also dropped on Disco Gecko. On a side note, Banco dropped a remix on LSA; the Gold Dub Woman mix of Gold Dust Woman. "91" is very much a rave behemoth; a 7-minute odyssey into feisty rave culture. It fits into the main album's theme of love and longing; being one of the central tracks of the package; The Princess And The Sky Goat being one of the others.
Mr. C drops an energetic tech-house mix that enhances the song's feeling of longing. Those who got on board with The 9th's message understood. I did. Mr. C's mix is one of my fave mixes on the package. Bennun & Healy provide a dub remix which appeared on 2019's "30 Times Around The Sun" compilation, which was also reviewed on this site. This mix is cool.
