German newspaper Berliner Zeitung has reported that Berghain will be remaining open in 2013, just weeks after the Guardian said the club would be closing on December 31st as a result of gigantic fee increases planned by copyright collection agency GEMA.
Picking up on the latest newspaper story, Resident Advisor noted that ‘Berghain, in characteristically tightlipped fashion, never confirmed any plans to close or to stay open’ following the Guardian’s report, though added that ‘further details on the club's plans are scarce at the moment’. The news provoked mixed reactions on RA’s comments section between clubbers delighted the club’s not closing and others remaining alarmed by the bigger threat to German clubland.
“The threat from GEMMA still remains,” Juanito pointed out, “there has been no agreement and all of Berlin's night life is still under threat”.
Good new yes, But i think it was pretty much taken for granted that it wasn't gonna shut its door,” Select Select suggested, “SMALL CLUBS will doffer about this bloody GEMA... not big clubs like Berghain.. simple!”
