Steve Aoki Leads ‘DJs for Obama’

Reported by News Editor / Submitted 16-08-12 15:50

Super-rich superstar DJ Steve Aoki is lending his support to a voter registration drive which aims to encourage EDM fans to vote for Obama in the upcoming US presidential elections.

"DJ's are about motivation, inspiration, celebration,” fellow celebrity DJ Cassidy said in a video introducing ‘DJS for Obama’, “That's why I think it makes perfect sense not only to celebrate this man, but to motivate to reelect him,” he suggested.

Details of the campaign emerged just as Spin magazine published an expose on Vegas club magnate Steve Wynn, revealing that the superclub owner whose venues host residencies for DJs including David Guetta, Skrillex, Deadmau5 and Steve Aoki is one of the biggest financial supporters of far right Republican guru Karl Rove.

Spin writer Philip Sherburne claimed Wynn has donated ‘millions of dollars’ to Rove’s campaign to elect Obama rival Mitt Romney noting that ‘the EDM boom has been very good to Wynn’, with ‘VIP’ clubbers in particular contributing vast sums.

“According to the Las Vegas nightlife website Jack Colton, bottle-service guests at XS should expect to tip between $500 and $1,000 upon arrival, in order to secure a desirable table,” Sherburne noted, ‘that's on top of the price of the bottles themselves, which begin at $475 apiece.’ (Spin.com)

Paul Van Dyk was one of the few superstar DJs to involve himself in politics in earlier presidential campaigns lending his support to ‘rock the vote’s campaign in 2004.

Chatting to Skrufff at the time he spoke candidly about the differences between Communist East Germany and the States recalling his experiences being watched by the notorious secret police the Stasi,

“It was completely different. Firstly, there wasn't such a thing as democracy in East Germany at all; it was a dictatorship,” he recalled.

“I still think you're able to say what you think in the States though it's a little bit more dangerous than it was five years ago. But you still can and that wasn't possible in East Germany. But maybe this is why I'm outspoken about my political views and about my stance as a democratic person- it's because I saw how what a dictatorship was like as a teenager. I saw what life was like, living with no basic rules of democracy; when you couldn't vote and everything was done the way the authorities said it should be done, you had no choice. I don't know what is more dangerous.”

Skrufff: You're family was under Stasi (secret police) surveillance when you were aged between 14 and 17 after your Mother applied to leave East Germany, did you notice being watched?

Paul Van Dyk: “As a kid it was like playing a game of cat and mouse, it had a fun element to it as well, because being young you don't get the whole picture of what was going on. My Mum quite often pointed things out, for example, there was an apartment across the street from us and for some reason they had this weird mirror set up by their window where they could see who was going in and out of our door. Stuff like that went on all the time and it was quite obvious, they didn't really make any effort to hide it.”

Skrufff: Were you questioned by the secret police at any time?

Paul Van Dyk: “We had to go randomly to the Ministry of Internal Affairs which was the official constitutional headquarters of the Stasi- the secret service. We were questioned regularly- Why did we want to leave the country? Who were our friends inside the country and outside the country? All that kind of stuff. That happened randomly though regularly.”

Always be mindful of wearing nicer shoes and avoid anything that can be considered sportswear (track jackets, jerseys, sports shoes, hats, etc). Remember, if you are unsure if something will work or not, play it safe . . .”)
