Acid techno figurehead Chris Liberator chatted to Skrufff about his spin-off punk band Dogs**te’s new EP Olympic Shame this week, and revealed that the incendiary old skool punk style track was inspired by their own experiences dealing with the sporting corporation.
“We had a pretty bad time over the Olympics, us and several others in the techno scene who'd pooled money to set up a pressing plant in Hackney got kicked out alongside several other businesses in order to clear way for the Olympics,” said Chris.
“We were offered no moving compensation at all, and although there was some publicity over the plight of the local businesses at the time, no relocation costs were ever met and we couldn't afford to start again somewhere else so we all lost a lot of money, and a massive effort to build up a co-op style business for the scene failed.”
Chris was equally pessimistic about the longer-term benefits the massive investment in sports infrastructure will supposedly bring to Hackney.
“The last time I was in a sports centre in East London it was in a disused one in Leyton where a squat party was being held so the last thing we need there is more sports facilities,” he suggested.
“I’ve also travelled to many, many places across the world and seen the abandoned sports centres and Olympic sites from Sydney to Montreal, all lying unused. In this time of financial austerity it's a travesty that we're paying for this
Setting up Dogsh**e with fellow acid techno friend and scene stalwart Guy ‘Geezer’ Mcaffer and recruiting Venezuelans Carmel on vocals and David on drums, the foursome always intended to speak out and raise issues, and remained on feisty form on the press release accompanying Olympic Shame.
“Who gives a flying fuck about the Olympics? Only those making a vast amount of cash out of it and the noble yet deluded athletes,” it suggests.
