Escapade Music Festival organiser Nick Vachon was reportedly on the run this week, after $600,000 was stolen from the vault of the Ottawa rave hours after 15,000 people danced to DJs including Afrojack, Avicii, Chuckie, and Eric Prydz.
The Ottawa Citizen said’ police are expected to issue a warrant’ for his arrest imminently, after the 26 year old promoter subsequently vanished.
Co-promoter Michael O’Farrell, told reporters he was ‘crushed’ when they opened up the safe on Monday morning and discovered the cash made from bar and ticket sales was gone, and accused his childhood friend and colleague of 15 years of the theft.
“I wanted to vomit. I was basically speechless, in shock and I thought it was just a bad dream,” he told the Ottawa Sun.
“You never think that your good friend would do something like this, just leave you,” he added. (Ottawa Sun: http://bit.ly/OcBsLk )
Details of the huge sums of money relatively small events can now generate emerged just as US EDM association ‘Future of Music Coalition’ warned that super-rich corporations buying up raves could ruin America’s scene by ‘promoting an ethos of exclusion rather than inclusion’ to cash in.
“What does a better dance experience mean in the minds of the white collar investor?” they asked in a lengthy blog posting about the issue, “Louder music, brighter lights, harder bass? Eight dollar bottled water? More exposure, more expense? EDM reality TV?” (Future of Music Coalition: http://bit.ly/LpYYmC )
