Burning Man Expands

Reported by News Editor / Submitted 02-07-12 19:13

Acclaimed arts festival Burning Man has been allowed to increase their official capacity from 50,000 to 60,900 people, after federal authorities approved a request from organisers to allow more people into the Black Rock Desert annual event.

Details of the new festival cap emerged four months after the Federal Bureau of Land Management reportedly placed Burning Man ‘on probation’ after claiming the festival exceeded capacity by 3.000 on two days during the 2011 edition.

Speaking about the over-capacity issue earlier in the year, organisers introduced a complicated ticketing system ensuring as many regulars as possible could buy tickets, though warned that not all would get in.

“There are indications that a large percentage of people attending Burning Man this year will be first-time Burners,” founding board member Marian Goodell announced via a blog posting in February.

“As eager as we are to welcome our newest citizens into our community, it’s crucially important that we have a solid foundation of veteran Burners in Black Rock City to meet, greet and acculturate these eager new participants, ensuring that they not only survive the elements but also fully participate in the Burning Man culture.”

“We will always welcome the stranger, and all are welcome to participate in the culture of Burning Man,” she stressed, “But that doesn’t necessarily mean we can all fit in one place at one time.” (Burning Man blog; http://bit.ly/yIH7FX )

In (completely unrelated) Burning Tree news, 26 year old American Sara Barnes has been arrested for setting fire to the world’s fifth oldest tree, a 3,500 year old Pond Cyprus tree in Florida.

Ms Barnes was arrested after she uploaded pictures of the burning tree onto her laptop. She subsequently admitted to ‘getting high’ with a friend inside the hollowed out tree trunk and lighting a fire inside the 16 foot diameter tree trunk ‘so they could see better’. The giant tree subsequently burned to the ground. (http://bit.ly/xJcAEr )
