Isle Of Wight Music Festival Crippled by Red Tape

Reported by News Editor / Submitted 08-06-12 10:51

Organisers of Isle of Wight dance/ music festival WOWfest accused local councillors and ‘anti-festival lobbyists’ of forcing them to cancel this year’s event, this week, via a press release in which they spoke of ‘many forces trying to prevent the event happening.”

The highly successful event, featuring headliners including ‘the world’s best DJ’ Paul Oakenfold, Norman Jay. Heaven 17, Peter Hook and Marshall Jefferson had initially planned to increase capacity to 22,000 though said they threw in the towel after the Isle of Wight Council backtracked.

“The Isle of Wight Act conditions imposed by the council on the 18th May required a lump sum payment of over £140,000 for Council and Emergency Services to be brought forward to the 31st May,” they explained.

“WOW Festivals Ltd informed the Isle of Wight Council and responsible authorities, before the payment deadline for over £140,000 under the Isle of Wight Act fell due, that WOWfest would revert to run a downsized event – under the size (5,000) at which the Isle of Wight Act is invoked.

However, the Isle of Wight Council rejected a minor variation application to voluntarily reduce the capacity and hours of operation on our Premises Licence and the Police decided to call for a full licence review, at the start of the Jubilee weekend. Undue and untimely pressure has resulted in one of the organisers suffering a stroke over the Jubilee weekend.” (http://bit.ly/LE5zLV )

In more independent festival news, All Tomorrow’s Parties announced a sudden change of venue for their upcoming December event, revealing they are to return to their ‘spiritual birthplace’ of Pontins.

“Butlins have decided to end their six year relationship with the festival. In reaction to this ATP will move The National's event to our original home - the recently refurbished Pontins holiday camp in Camber Sands - on the same dates this December,” they announced on their website.

“The venue is just over an hour's drive from the London area. All original ticket bookings remain valid, and refunds will be available until the end of June for those who no longer wish to attend following this change.”
