Alternet drug expert Kristen Gwynne labelled police claims that ‘Miami Zombie’ Rudy Eugene ate the eyes, nose and lips of a homeless man after taking ‘bath salts’ as ‘dumb and dangerous anti-drug propaganda’ this week, and declared ‘bath salts are not the new LSD’.
Talking about the dreadful murder, Armando Aguilar, president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police, echoed angel dust style anecdotes of users developing super-human strength and homicidal rages, telling reporters ‘the cases are similar minus a man eating another’.
"They (bath salt users) become violent and they are burning up for the inside. Their organs are reaching a level that most would die. By the time police approach them they are a walking dead person,” he claimed. (ABC NEWs: http://abcn.ws/JT2sNJ )
Pointing out that his comments were based entirely on speculation, Ms Gwynne was unimpressed.
“(So) it is not homelessness, poverty, mental illness, that causes the violent break, but rather bath salts, LSD, speed, and coke,” she said, “As Jacob Sullum at Reason pointed out, years ago, we would have blamed it all on weed.”
Meanwhile in Australia, the Daily Telegraph suggested much less notorious though illegal synthetic drug ‘Nexus’ (aka 2CB) could become the country’s ‘next big thing’ narcotic after local cops announced a five fold spike in seizures.
A "LOVE" drug from the 70s is emerging as the new ecstasy among Sydney club goers,” the Telegraph reported, “Nexus has a reputation as the "ultimate" drug - mainly propagated by its creator, American pharmacologist Dr Alexander Shulgin.”
Speaking about his discovery in 2003, the legendary onetime DEA approved scientist renowned for resynthesizing and inadvertently popularizing MDMA, was indeed effusive.
“It is, in my opinion, one of the most graceful, erotic, sensual, introspective compounds I have ever invented. For most people, it is a short-lived and comfortable psychedelic, with neither toxic side-effects nor next-day hang-over,” said Dr Shulgin.
“Once the MDMA has shown you where your problems are, the 2C-B opens up the emotional, intuitive and archetypal area of your psyche to help you solve them.
