How can i record a DJ mix with CD quality or similar?

Ive got Pioneer CD players and mixer and a soundcard conected to the laptop and mixer.

Ive tried recording with Audacity but the sound quality isnt very good.

Ive heard someone before talking about a kind of kit (like a portable cd player) that you conect to the mixer and just records whatever your playing withouth using a computer.

there a loads of portable recorders available these days

for example

http://www.camdensounds.co.uk/digital-recorders/zoom-h4n-handy-4-track-portable-digital-audio-recorder.html

if your mixer has XLR outputs (im not up on dj mixers any more) then you may as well take advantage of them and get a recorder with XLR inputs like the Zoom

not used one myself, but it seems ok on paper

stereo minijack input accepts line level

auto gain control can be switched off

can be set specifically 16 bit / 44.1 kHz WAV (or better if need be)

I would invest in a better soundcard - recording through that and audacity will be good as long as you set your levels correctly - I use audacity and the standard line-in on a macbook and the sound quality is brilliant.

What Skelp said.

Benton has gone a tiny bit overboard IMO Wink

You don't need massively expensive equipment to record to CD quality on your lappy.

When I used to broadcast, I'd just use an RCA to 3.5mm cable from booth out to line-in with zero issues or sound quality problems.

Also, if I remember right the Pioneer mixers have a record out but it has a limiter on it, so it compresses the sound - if you're using the record out try using a different out (booth?) before you buy any more kit

Silence is never neutral.

I assumed OP would want to record while playing out at some point

I wouldn't fancy taking a MacBook to a disco

wtf benneton, a sizeable percentage of [misguided] DJs be playing their set off a macbook anyway these days.... Laughs out loud

and also a +1 for Skelp, the OP shouldn't be finding the sound quality is bad in Audacity; it's as good at recording .wavs as any other program, I would think the problem lies further up the signal chain. Some light redlining on the mixer, for example, might not be audible through a PA but could be very noticeable in the recording. Or maybe cheap cables, knackered record-out on the mixer, dodgy sound card/drivers etc; the list of possible snafus is large. Might even be that the record input level is set too high in the audio preferences resulting in clipping etc etc etc

and if, like OP, they use CD players, is it advisable to take their £1000+ personal laptop to nightclub purely to record their set when a £75 pocket recorder will do
