This is exactly what those young sports people and sports coach were saying in response to Camerons misguided call for teachers to try harder with sports at school. The messages coming from the government are so mixed, but what is true is grassroots sports to identify promising young stars has never been better. That's why we've got 26 golds. Schools should be getting more money and resources to promote sport and inclusion for all, but instead they're facing cuts and school playing fields being sold off.

I definitely agree with that to a large extent.

My school provided all of the amenities/facilities to cater for top athletes... and forced us to do athletics and swimming up until year 10. Mind you, I did go to school in Australia and it is a bit different over there. Christ knows what's happened to us in this Games. Roll eyes (sarcastic)

Should I have had any desire to train competitively, my school definitely had the facilities to do it, and if I was any good there, I could have gone on to the Australian Institute of Sport.

However, I hated it and was lucky enough to have parents who gave me the support to do sport that I actually wanted to do (tennis, netball and horse riding).

Not a dig at all, but it does seems Aussies have dropped off the pace massively in most sports you used to rule at, for example cricket and rugby. First time in many a year that I am not phased by Aussies any more when it comes to sports

Yeah, maybe they're not pushing it as hard in schools as they used to. Big grin

Nah, tbh, I'm not sure if it's complacency, as to say that would be taking away from the athletes who are performing and I give full credit to them. I think that everyone has upped their game and Australia has been left behind - hopefully it will give them a kick up the arse to get a move on.

I don't mind either way though, I think sportsmen should be given credit for their achievements irrespective of their country of origin (unless, of course, we kick your arse in which case I shall lol uproariously in your face. Big grin ).

I have always known Aussies to be fiercely competitive so it would be a shame if they have eased up in schools as I love the rivalry with you guys but I just havent heard of Aussies ruling any major sport for quite some time now. Maybe it is just a case of you not producing 'above the rest' sort of quality sportsmen any more.

Bring it on, biaaatch, must hurt that Saffas and Pomms are better than you at cricket Tee hee hee Razz

Nobody wins at everything all the time, and being able to take your lumps without slashing your wrists or being a cunt about it is an important life skill (and a lot harder to learn).

So no, it isn't just about the winning, the losing is important too.

I agree. Well said Pacman. Thumbs up

B******s. At school it should be about promoting discipline, focus and an interest in sport. Otherwise you're just going to favour the kids that have developed faster than the others and ensure the ones who haven't sprouted to 6ft tall bruisers at the age of 16 give up and consign themselves to a life in front of the xbox.

Once you've left school and decided to carry on a sport voluntarily, THEN it should be about winning. But hopefully you learned enough about sportsmanship during your school years not to be a prick about it when you do win.

exactly this
