He made a great point about how it instils discipline, promotes inclusion and social aspects, promotes health and wellbeing and said if too much emphasis is put on winning that it excludes those who may not be naturally gifted. A wise head on young shoulders!
This is great when getting kids into sport and having an inclusive attitude for all to feel able to get involved.
Your very vauge thread title didn't really detail where your idea had come from.
No proffesional athlete is going to put performance above winning, though ideally they would like to do both. You often hear in interviews about how a sportsperson is really pleased they won despite performing under par.
I think it is fair to say that everyone on the Internet is annoying.

I didn't think the title was to ambiguous. Sport is not just about the winning. It never is, even for professional sports women and men.

I think you also have to differentiate between team sports and individual sports. I am doing a lot of running at the moment and it's about improving my own abilities. I compete against myself. I did a 10km a while ago and I was nowhere close to winning and never will be, but I put in a time I was happy with and I'll try and beat that next time.

That makes no sense.
OK, lets make it simple for you.
A tennis player is picked to play at Wimbledon.
They get paid more for every step further in the competition they get, so they will for financial reasons want to advance as far as they can. They will also dream of winning it, regardless of their chances.
A football player who gets a £2 million pound bonus if his team wins the league is not going to care if they came second in the league and loses that bonus.
Edit: When they're proffesional it becomes a living and I would imagine most driven people want to do the best at their chosen proffesion.
I think it is fair to say that everyone on the Internet is annoying.

Looks like a women from Team GB is going to win a Gold for punching shit out of another woman all in the name of sport.
Think people get punched in the head and stomach for competitions sake or because they want to win... Hmmm.
