ESP (Electric Space Phenomena) is a collaboration act between Boris Blenn from the awesome Electric Universe and Olli Wisdom of the super Space Tribe fame! These guys have been making music in the psychedelic trance scene for over 15 years and so have had a huge influence in the shaping and evolving of the scene. Lucky attendees of the renowned Shattered Barriers party will be able to hear a taste of what these guys deliver individually; as well as when fused - when they play at Shattered Barriers – Odyssey on the 26th November 2011, in London, UK. I decided it was definitely time to catch up with Olli, a true pioneer of the scene . . .
So Olli, you were previously the lead singer in a Goth/Glam band back called ‘The Specimen’ back in the 80’s and discovered the psychedelic scene in the early 90’s. What led you to the psychedelic scene and how do the two scenes differ?
Different times – different crimes!! I discovered the Psychedelic parties in Koh Phangan in Thailand in 1988 whilst travelling in Asia by chance. Trance is like a virus – once you’re infected you can’t go back to how you were before.
When and how did you guys first meet and how long was it until you decided to collaborate?
We met in 1995 when Boris did the mastering for the first Space Tribe album “Sonic Mandala” …. We always wanted to work together & we finally got in the studio together in 2000 & made “The Acid Test”
How was the first collaboration? Did you instantly find a way of working together or was there some compromising?
From the start it was a very easy connection & the music just flowed from there . . .compromise? NEVER!
What do you think defines you both as artists?
Hopefully we redefine ourselves daily
You’re both well respected and talented artists in your own right, when you collaborate under the ESP act how does this sound differ to your solo projects?
We both bring in fresh ideas to the project, the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts
What and who have been your influences and inspirations throughout your career so far?
Everything in life . . . good, bad, ugly and beautiful.
Do you feel the psychedelic scene has changed over the years?
Everything evolves, now it has become a truly global phenomenon . . . all over the world same crew different faces.
What are your favourite pieces of studio equipment?
Apple computer & Access Virus
Olli – you are also co-owner of Space Tribe clothing – how did this come about?
It kind of started by accident with my brother Miki & Richmond Smith, we went to Bali to make some things for the Goa flea market in 1992 and it turned out to be so popular that we just continued with it. The loudest most psychedelic clothing on the planet.
You’ve both used real guitars in your productions and live acts, when did you first try this and do you have any plans to incorporate other live instruments in your sets?
I have played with Jon Klein since the 80s with Specimen so it was easy to work with him on Space Tribe tracks, with ESP it is also with Roland Wedig so we have 2 guitarists which makes for a very powerful live show, we also use live synths and Iphone for our live sets
What do you have in store for the future - as individual artists and collaboratively?
Expect the unexpected!
Lastly – you’re both playing at the next Shattered Barriers event. What delights can people expect from your sets?
Fantastic, deep, full-power, psychedelic dance music with wild guitars and incredible production technique, one step further evolved than the usual. How far down the Rabbit Hole do you want to go?
