Lost Dawn goes gringo with Vadoinmessico

Reported by Cerberus / Submitted 29-08-11 18:24

2 years young and forever challenging club night expectations –Lost Dawn for their birthday party are not only offering free sushi and sake on arrival but also a cast of live acoustic performances to provide some alternative sounds to their banging house room. Ibiza Rocks has been a huge success on the White Isle and progressive disco groups like Crazy P and Kites remind us of the joy of live energetic performance.

The 2nd Birthday Party on the 24th September will see the return of last year’s popular ‘The Lugosi’, providing some dreamy melodic and harmonic rock. Also support from ‘The Tangerine Fields Collective’ (spawned from the tent hire company of the same name) playing acoustic covers of this summer’s festival favorites and finally - hang onto your sombreros and pour me ‘another’ Tequila we will be graced by the recently crowned Hackney Wicked headliners Vadoinmessico. They are a 5 piece band flung together from the four corners of the Earth residing in London and playing beautiful, nostalgic psychedelic folk-pop. They have recorded their debut album, with the help of mix engineer Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Portishead, etc) and are now ready to enchant the world with their exceptional sounds.

Vadoinmessico make music that reflects their culturally diverse origins, and their migratory status in London. The themes that run through Giorgio’s songs are those of the nostalgia of lost lands and lost loves, (something the people of Lost Dawn can empathise with as they are still searching for Dawn), but set to the warm and exotic tones of the Mediterranean and Latin influences that permeate their entirely unique sounds. However, there is also a dimension to Vadoinmessico that is pop, playful, beautiful and warm – which will appeal to all. I took time out to speak with (one time Katie Melua tour bass player) the multi-talented – Salvador Garza.

Hey Salvi - tell me about Vadoinmessico. Who are you and how did you guys get together?

Vadoinmessico is Giorgio(Italy), Stefan (Austria) , Alessandro (Italian), Joe (UK) and me from Mexico. Giorgio, Stefan and I met at music school in London where Giorgio and I started putting together musical influences that we liked and then started forming the band with Stefan. After various experiments with different band members, we felt we had achieved the perfect balance with our friends Alessandro and Joe, respectively playing bass and drums.

What does Vadoinmessico mean?

Vadoinmessico simply means "I go to Mexico".

How would you best describe your sound?

I always find it quite hard to describe our sound, as we draw elements from many different styles of music and mix them together. I guess most of the songs are quite uplifting, especially live. Our sound is sometimes described as "folk", and I think that's true to a certain extent. But folk music is usually strongly connected to a certain place, a certain country and musical tradition, whereas I feel we don't have that quality of geographical strictness to our music, but we draw a lot from folk music from different places. So I guess being labeled as a "folk" band in England could be very misleading. I read somewhere someone defining our music as "space folk". I really like that paradox.

How important is technology in your sound?

Well, I don't think our instrumentation relies much on technology, as most of the instruments we play are at least 30 years old. Though, we have recently introduced a sampler into our instrumentation and we do like to use some digital pedals. However, technology does play a key role when it comes to recording as it allowed us to record and mix most of our album ourselves.

What has been the biggest or your favourite gig to date?

Well, this year we've had a few amazing gigs where we had a lot of fun. Strangely, the best gigs have been the lower profile ones, like some friends' wedding party or a last minute show at the Counter Cafe, in Stour Space during Hackney Wicked Festival. That's where people really seem to let go and have fun. We also are appearing at Alex James’ (Blur) Farm. It is called the Harvest Farm Festival and were on the same billing as the Kooks and Athlete.

Are you guys superstitious or have any backstage ceremonies you perform before going on stage?

The Italians are quite superstitious I have to say . . . but not before gigs, its normally just a panic and stumble on to the stage or having problems finding all the members.

Have you guys trashed any hotel rooms or instruments?

We have definitely trashed some instruments but not intentionally but just out of clumsiness.

I know you are releasing a few singles these days and there is an album coming out too, tell me about that.

Yep, we have released our first single in May called ‘Curling Up Your Spine’ and we are releasing another one called 'Pepita Queen Of The Animals’ on September 5th, for which we'll have a big party on Friday 2nd September at the New Empowering Church, in Hackney. After that everything is still to be confirmed, but there will be stuff coming out and our first full length album will be released early next year.

You’ll be playing at Lost Dawn in September as guest acoustic musicians what can we expect?

Expect May 1966, Manchester Free Trade Hall.**

After the set at Lost Dawn will the Vadoinmessico boys be getting down and funky in the dance room and show us some funky moves?

I know Alessandro definitely will be getting down and dirty, I'll be joining you for some Sake . . .

**WIKIPEADIA - (wiki source Bob Dylan played on 17 May 1966, shortly after he "went electric" and at the height of the controversy over his perceived betrayal of his folk roots. It was here that he was famously branded a Judas by a member of the audience. A "bootleg" recording of that concert was officially released in 1998 as The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert. This was in reference to the name of the incorrect naming of the circulating bootleg before it was released.)

DANCE
On the platters that matter we have guest DJ’s STU COX and Lucy Stone AKA BAM BO TANG. Stu not only has travelled extensively in his DJ career but has played for mega clubs such as Goodgreef, Godskitchen, Galley and Slinky. His sound of breaks, techno, trance and house have destroyed dance floors for the best part of the last decade and his music productions have had wide acclaim from the likes of Ferry Corsten and John Askew.

Lucy Stone has headlined ‘Pacha’ with her combination of glam-electro, white-label house and retro classics giving her clubbers a mixed bag of tunes. Recently installed as Hed Kandi resident in Ibiza, if you haven’t seen her before at one of the many super clubs on the face of the planet – here’s you chance to get up close and personal with the current world diva of the decks.

Our resident DJ’s will also be in full effect with Tom Gallagher, Adam Symbiosis and Craig Gunn joined at the helm by new resident for 2011 Leigh Cuvelier aka Miss C.
