Timeless @ Koko

Koko, formerly known as Camden Palace and now relaunched with this new name after a multi-million makeover to create a top music venue, and, at the same time restoring its theatrical style. Then me, going from spending at least one of the days of my weekends here til not going at all. I havenít set foot inside since they closed for restoration. So levels of expectations are high and that combined with what is known as one of the biggest nights, Timeless, reveals the all time hard house anthems from the past.
Being the last one for six months, this has been minutely planned, and, to help unravel the past theyíve brought in experts with the likes of OD404 and Captain Tinrib as well as fresh back to back sets from Andy Whitby vs. Cally Gage as well as Mark French vs. Phil Reynolds. This will be the biggest classical DJ line up of 2005.
For the sound, the installation of no less then 4 function one bassbins will ensure the music will rock no matter where you want to park your feet and have you stomp. So you wanderers, fall on your knees and salute, no matter where, the music will be perfect. Theyíve even put podiums is on the dance floor so, if you donít suffer from vertigo, you can go have a stomp up there and look out over the field of bouncy clubbers whilst strutting your stuff.
The rest of the club has been thoroughly decorated to fit the occasion. Working together with the freshly painted red interior is a massive light show and 7 plasma screens that with some aid of 4 super Mac-lasers together promise to create a feast for my sore eyes. Could the week progress any slower? Finally itís time.
Arriving inside, coats and bags whisked away surprisingly fast after my lightly dressed friend flirted her way past the queue with the flash of a smile and some skin, K90 is already at it. Iím starting the night at my old fav place of the palace, and I know that from here it cannot go wrong. As soon as my feet are placed down on to the familiar spot, eyes on the main stage I sense it, the wholesome feeling of returning home after a long trip.
There are actually very few DJs out there that really make the effort and go out of their way to please the crowd and this is a master at his best. With the grin of a little naughty schoolboy heís owning it with his ĎI know something that you donítí and Iíll show youÖ. nanananana na. Now donít get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing cocky about it, heís loving it large up there with a raw honest energy. Pumping it in to us in the crowd, filling us with a never-ending source. Genuine is probably not even close to describing what it is that he delivers to us, there is no hesitation about how we will take it, and literally we are all under his spell. Empowering the whole room, K90 takes over completely and for the whole set I see only him, on stage, surrounded by a glowing light. Some people would call that a religious experience, but this is mightier still. I know... Iíve just been K90íed.
Moving on, although I think of this set as one Iíd never get enough of, variety is the key to success and the followers, OD404 want to prove that, in rocking the socks off us, theyíre not far behind. Once again a pumping set of classics old and new, but well recycled and in a brand new box. Ear candy!
Next on the decks is a Lady, and not any old tart; this is one of my fav ladies in arms, Lucy Fur!! Sheís innocently sweet looking but always delivers hard knocking beats. Beware! Iíve learned from old mistakes thinking, you know, in the old fashion line of Ladies can only play it funky. But why, when harder is so much more fun. Give it to me rough any day. And for tonight, I think sheís reading my mind, cos rough is just the way Iím getting it.
Little Gem and Captain Tinrib came and went, both delivering more then hoped for. They came, took over, ruled and left for others to try and keep up. The pace was set, and you better equip yourself with fast moving feet or you stood no chance at all. My mates see clubbing as a kindergarden. They know that leaving me on the dance floor means Iíll stay happily bouncing up and down the whole night, non-stop. The only thing they need to remember is a brief stop to force some H2O down my throat. The rest of the night they can happily wander around and then come pick me up when itís time to go home. So spending this night with a restless wanderer was a new experience for me. Within two tunes of standing at a chosen spot it was time to move. No place seemed good enough and it always seemed to be in a never stopping ant-path, where people constantly tried to make room for themselves in the space theyíd chosen to dance at. Give me some space! I hate trying to dance restricting my moves and thatís the only drawback of using KOKO at a popular event like this.
It gets crammed and at times super sweaty and reminds me a little of taking the tube in rush hour. Except for the fact that instead of rubbing against men in suits and women with too much perfume I get to slap my arms and hands on sweat soaked backs and shower in drops of it flying from peopleís hair. Wonderful. No place to be shy, in here we all get to share fluids. It was a little cooler then normal after all, even though that doesnít say much. More fans next time maybe? But thatís probably the only negative thing I can say.
One set well looked forward to and very much anticipated would once again be right-nowís beautiful hard dance couple Cally Gage and Andy Whitby. The tunes were pumping, decks scratched and spun, and energy levels still kept high. But Iím not satisfied. Somehow the magic is gone, Timeless felt... a little clueless. Even though not beaten by a lot, this for me, was the least enjoyable set of the night. And Iím surprised. Iíve done nothing but praise Andy and Cally has really grown on me. From hardly knowing shit about her sheís sneaked up on me from behind and really lifted me out of my boxers with her wicked interpretation of hard house as I known it. But this set was a lot of random scratching bits, breaking up the flow for too long, holding up the beats for just that extra bit of time that gets the crowd stopping. Then a little longer, so that you need a complete restart to build up the energy once again before bringing back that happy-go-lucky stage of euphoria. There is nothing wrong with a little slow bit, a breather, a change in phase and rhythm, itís when its unnecessary long or hollow its becoming noticeable. Cally, is already back in my good books anyways, after delivering a fucking amazing set @ the after party. Andy, Iíll see you in the next round. You were the weakest link. Auf weidersen.
The last pair on the decks are two old time farts, Mark French and Phil Reynolds. What can I say? Back to back, ass-to-ass, twisting and turning. Iím loving it, and nursing every minute passing by as I know that with every wicked beat produced under one of their flint fast fingers, time goes closer towards ending my pleasure. Timeless is restless and time went by far too fast. I mean, I hardly got started before it was time to pack it in. How did the night fly by so damned quick? It was like we all got stuck in an evil time warp spinning the arrows of the clock in the same speed as the mixer tables. No one wanted to leave. Yip, fuck modesty, this was the best night in a very long time. But all good things I guess come to an end, just too bad itís 6 months until the next one... for now itís all on the bus to the after party.
Thanks to Daf for his awesome pics.

Interesting review. You are wrong of course because Andy and Cally were clearly the set of the night. From your review of their set you are obviously delusional. For gods sake.... Captain Tin Rib accidently played the same 5 minute loop for half his set!!!

What an odd review.

Not being funny but it took you a month to come up with this!? At best its a very non-specific / generic overview lacking any decent substance, at worst its just wrong! What abt Billy Bunter? Whitby didnt scratch and OD404/Tinrib couldnt manage a classic between them!
From: Futon on 12th Nov 2005 19:34.21
Whitby did manage to cock up most of the breakdowns by EQing them too much though so quite glad he didn't bother scratching. OD404 managed a classics set without 9-Bar or Fireball?!?!

Dissapointing review sorry. Would've been great to find out what classics were actually played - afterall, thats what the night was all about!
You also quote Phil Reynolds & Marc French as "old farts". Posssibly the two best hard dance DJs who would shite all over many of the others on that Timeless line-up. Where's the respect?

A review is writen for normal clubbers and not for wannabe DJs like you lot! Reading a rewiev and seeing names of tracks wont mean anything to me unless i get to hear them! Most normal clubbers are like me. If you want to know what they played there go there! If you lot know how to write an reviw then why dont you? Its easy to complain about others peoples work. After all, this rewiev is about the way she experienced the night so nobady can say that its wrong. Andy Whithy and Cally Gage sucked, and i can say that couse i was there
